Timing and Firing Orders

Ensure cam and crank are timed correctly. When installing distributor, make sure rotor is pointing near number one. On firewall to the left there is a plastic cover. Under cover is a tan wire w/ black stripe. Unplug this wire. Start engine ( check engine light will be on because wire is unplugged ) and set timing to 0 degrees. Shut off engine. Reconnect wire. You're good to go.

1,3,5 left ,2,4,6 right on most GM motors.

For the 04 it is an integral part of the fuel pump assembly which is located in the tank. I think you can access the tank by removing the back seat, but you might have to take the tank off.

By diagram, if you are refering to the Emissions Control label located on the under side of the hood, it is only good for telling you what your timing (x degrees before top dead center (BTDC)) should be, given the engine you have. Haynes sells a service manual (about $17.00) that does a pretty good job of explaining how to go about setting the ignition timing on your engine, including descriptions of where the timing marks are for your engine and how to perform the timing adjustments.

most cars have a diagram under the hood or in the owners manual if you still have one 1-4-3-2 firing order.

on the left front of the engine the order is 1 2 3 and on the right front it is 4 5 6 and from across it is 1 4 2 5 3 6

The firing order should be 1-2-3-4-5-6.

To get more fuel-air mixture into a four stroke engine the intake valve stays open to get some added benefit from Newtons third law of motion acting on the fuel-air mixture.

My brother has a 89 S10 Chevrolet Blazer 4x4 with a 6cyl engine in it, and stamped on top of the engine just in front of the air cleaner it reads Engine Timing 165432.

If you have made the mistake of removing the distributor from an engine without marking exactly where the rotor was, and where the distributor was, you have created a lot of work for yourself. First, you must get the crankshaft to Top Dead Center for the number one piston. There are timing marks on the pulley, which must line up with a pointer or mark mounted on the block. Once this is done, the distributor must be inserted into the head in such a way that the rotor will be under the number one cylinder plug wire position when the distributor is seated. This usually means having the rotor about 20 degrees offset when inserting the distributor, to allow for the worm gear to line up with the drive gear. Then, you have to turn the distributor until the lobe on the distributor shaft which opens the points is just beginning to open the points. Once this is done, the engine should start, and then will need to be timed with a timing light.

On a 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis :

As far as I know the firing order for the 5.0 L ( 302 cubic inch ) V8 used in the F150 changed to ( 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 ) in 1995 and was the same in 1996 . The distributor rotor turns COUNTER CLOCKWISE The 4.9 L ( 300 cubic inch ) straight 6 is ( 1-5-3-6-2-4 ) The distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE The 5.8 L ( 351 cubic inch ) V8 is ( 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 ) The distributor rotor turns COUNTER CLOCKWISE Look for your VECI sticker in your engine compartment on the fan shroud or in front of the radiator ( Vehicle Emission Control Information )

Eight cylinder engines: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3, 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 The firing order is always given in the owner's manual and sometimes stamped on a plate on the engine or in the engine compartment.
