Where is the thermostat located and how do you replace it on a 2005 Chevy Impala 3.4L V6?

Your thermostat is located inside the thermostat housing at the end of the upper radiator hose, on the back of the engine. Just find your upper radiator hose and follow it to the engine. It's hooked to the thermostat housing. easy... now comes the fun...

To replace your thermostat, you have to remove the air intake duct (which mean unplug all your sensors on it, MAF etc). That should give you better access to the housing.

You still have the throttle body right above the housing, and you may have to remove it too for better access and that sucks...(it involves disconnecting some coolant bypass lines...make sure you drain your radiator before you do so)

You pretty much have to take off the throttle body to access the thermostat housing. A great help would be to pick up a new gasket to replace the one between the throtle body and engine BEFORE you find out you have damaged the old gasket. Also, some carb cleaner helps take the deposits out of the throttle body.

Once you have that done remove the thermostat housing (after you unplug the coolant temperature sensor) and have some towels and a bucket ready as coolant will be coming out of it.

Remove the old thermostat, remove the old gasket if necessary, and put the new thermostat with the new gasket in there (with the spring pointing toward the engine). Put some RTV sealant on the housing bolt it back on there, and put the throttle body back as well as the air duct and all the sensors. Refill your radiator, turn your engine on and check for leaks.

hope this helps

The 1994 Volvo 850 does not have an OBD2 connector. In fact, this car is instead in the OBD1 group.

In order to read fault code ( Fuel injection, Ignition, Automatic transmission...) there is a Diagnostic Test Unit located in the front right hand side of the engine compartment . It consists of two modules side by side, with a plastic cover on each one . After lifting the covers off, you can see the modules marked A and B, where each one has six numbered sockets.

Where exactly is the fan blower fuse for speeds 12 3 on a 1996 Volvo 850 T5 turbo estate and what does it look like?

The fuse should be under the hood in the fuse panel it is #32 on the 97 850 sedan. blower speed 4 is on a separate fuse. I had the problem of speeds 1,2,3 not working and the culprit was the balast resistor. it is ceramic unlike the metal coils used in the American cars. the ceramic deteriorates and the wires break inside the resistor. see answer for ......Where is the air and heater blower relay located on a Volvo 850?.... to find out where the resistor is located.

How do you add freon to 1994 Volvo 850?

To add Freon to a 1994 Volvo 850 you will need to buy 4 cans of Arctic Ice and one can of blue dye. Use the spray can nozzle to attach to the air conditioning compressor and add the Freon.

I am a certified auto AC tech and would not recommend putting 4 cans of Freon in a car AC system all at once. If you do not have gauges then put one can of Freon (refrigerant) in at a time. Have the air conditioner turned up on high, the car running and begin adding the Freon while shaking the can. When the compressor kicks on ( you should hear the compressor click on) you should almost be finished. If the compressor cycles in and out quickly this means you need more Freon. If the compressor clicks on and runs for a minute or 2 then put no more Freon in the system.

Why does a Volvo 850 blows out smoke when air conditioner turned on?

The smoke is actually water vapor. This typically occurs during periods of high humidity. It could also be the result of a damp cabin air filter or a blocked condensate drain.

How would you replace a seal to stop an oil leak on a 1994 Volvo 850?

Easy when you know which one

If you tell me where the leak is coming from I can tell you how to repair it. I've just been through a similar problem with an 850 T5. They aren't too bad but if it's a rear main seal then the motor has to come out.

Also check the pcv valve, mine was badly clogged and caused a bad oil leak, much cheaper fix!

From personal experience with 850 turbos. Check/Replace oil cap $4, turbo O-ring & gasket $15, valve cover (form a gasket) and check return line hose and clamps. Volvo has special clamps. The inter-cooler and clamps on 94's are common deal.

How do you reset the check engine light on a 1996 Volvo 850?

draper specialist tools sell a service light resetter which plugs into the computer connector sited under the coin holder in the centre console. It has a 16 pin connector and and resetting is done by the press of a switch ! try draper.com or eBay and look for the Volvo service tool. (it does other models too) retail price is 50 pounds sterling

Alternative - if you have a VDO instrument panel

My 850GLT has on board diagnostics, on LHS next to washer fluid filler, I was shown by the garage ........

Switch on ignition, insert fly lead into socket 7 of diagnostic module, then press the button firmly four times. When the LED stays on you are ready to program.

Enter code 1 5 1 by pressing once and releasing then wait for the LED to light, then press button 5 times and wait for the LED to light again. Press the button once.

Programming is done when the led flashes several times in succession, switch off ignition and remove lead from diag unit. Switch ignition back on and start engine. Light should be off. repeat if not successful.

If instrument panel is by Yazaki - reset is manual on the dash.

Please note that the Check Engine Light is not the same thing as the service light, and the above routine will not reset it.

Heater fan motor will not cut off after turning car off?

Your blower motor relay went bad. You may also need to replace either the blower motor or one of the climate control sensors. If your blower motor squeals or makes a scraping sound it is going bad and will damage the blower motor relay. JQ

How do you replace a radiator on a95 Volvo 850 turbo?

not sure if its exactly the same on yours mine is a 1997 850 t5 but mine has to come out the bottom of the car start by removing the plastic cover underneath the front of the car and drain the radiator with the drain plug on the drivers side then you must remove the plastic shielding above the radiator to access all of the hoses and remove those the intake should just pop off with some minor tugging also disconnect hoses to the inter cooler because the radiator and inter cooler have to come out together now disconnect the wires plugged into the cooling fan the fan can come out the top of the car should be two bolts at the top and two screws also at the top note the routing of all wires you will need to remember the fan has two tabs that slide into slots at the bottom of the radiator so you should be able to pull it straight up after disconnecting everything once the fan is out get back under the car and there should be one bolt on each side of the radiator remove those and the radiator should come out with the inter cooler which are bolted together unbolt the two and the radiator is finally out reverse this operation to reinstall double check all hoses and wires and plugs before refilling with fluid and starting the car keep an eye on fluid level for next day or so

How do you replace gear shift knob in a Volvo 850?

First, locate the portion of the leather dust boot just below shifter knob. The boot is connected to the shifter by a lock ring that you can feel under the leather boot. Rotate the top of the leather boot about 45 degrees and push down. It takes a little muscle so be persistent. Now, you should be able to see the bare metal selector post connected to the shifter knob/handle. Now the fun part. Simply pull straight up with as much force as possible. Be patient and be careful to avoid hitting and damaging your rear view mirror when it does eventually pop off. Installation is simply the reverse. The new shifter handle will click into place when ample down force is applied. It is a very basic procedure requiring no tools and minimal skill.

On a Volvo 2.5 CD what does CD stand for?

It may mean nothing at all - sometimes the letters can be pretty random. However, I've hunted the web for the past hour, and the best i can come up with Compact Delux (based on their marketing strategy in the USA). sorry, but i did try - now it's annoying me too! I'll have to ask my brother who is a Volvo Technician... I have sinced asked my brother and he assures me that the letters did not signify anything other than the specification of the car, also, he advises that the letters did not stand for anything as far as he can recall.
