Depends on what vehicle and where on the engine it is located. If you're lucky the alternater (like most vehicles)will be on the front of the engine. You have to loosen the belt that travels around the alternator by finding the idler pully or tension pully and loosening it. Once that is done you just disconnect the battery lead to the old alternator, unbolt the mount bolts and remove it. do the reverse to put the new one on. If you end up removing the belt there should be a belt diagram on the inside hood detailing the routing of the belt. It's a good idea to go to the local parts store to find a Chilton's or other manual for your make of car to find more detailed instructions for this project. Best case, this job will only take 30-40 minutes.

yes there is a fuse for an alternater ,depending on what type vehicle you have it should be under the hood and fairly large

With engine running hold a screw driver to the back of the alternator, if there is no magnetic field, the alternator is bad.

If you can afford a BMW then you can afford to take it to a BMW dealership to replace the alternator. Cold blooded answer. I will research (and if necessary replace one) and place proper information on replacing a BMW Z4 roadster alternator. Original answer obviously given by someone with perceived wealth envy. I am currently replacing the alternator in my 2001 525i, E39 chassis. I will add my progress with instructions here. This is NOT the water cooled unit. The first thing that I did was to disconnect the battery. Next, remove the air cleaner housing. this was achieved by loosening the hose clamp to the air intake, removing the 10mm securing bolt and then removing two 8mm screws that secure it to the "second section" of the air intake unit. There are also two clamps that should be flipped out of the unit using a flathead screwdriver. The air cleaner housing should then lift out.

I just had to replace one in my daughters car, rebuilt they wanted $140.00 at the junk yard it was $80.00 i was lucky and got on out of a bone yard a friend of a friend works at for free, just hope it lasts longer than a few weeks lol.

If you have nothing on, as in, radio, lights, etc, you can easily drive 20 miles on a fully charged battery. If you have your lights on then maybe 10 miles. It really depends on how good the battery is.

Could be a bad belt, if you bought a rebuilt alternator then it may not be up to snuff, you might need to replace your battery, or you might have a parasitic drain in the vehicle's electronics somewhere which has nothing to do with the alternator. Without knowing the conditions under which it occurs, or why you had the alternator replaced in the first place (namely, whether you actually diagnosed it or just threw a part at it), it's a bit impossible to narrow it down.

check to see if the fuel pump is turning on its electric and located inside the gas tank put your ear next to the tank and have someone turn the key on there should be a whiring noise if not either the pump is bad the fuse is shot or the fuel shut off switch is tripped


There are way too many variables to give you an answer. Are the plugs getting spark? Are the firing chambers getting fuel and is it getting there at the right time? Is the air cleaner clean and is the exhaust pipe open (letting air through)? You require three things to fire an engine. Fuel - Air (mixed with the fuel in the proper mixture) - and Spark. If you have all three and the engine is properly timed, it will run.

Most alternators are interchangeable. You will need to use an alternator that has the correct amperage for the make and model of your automobile.

If your car doesnt start, it could be the battery. But if the car starts and you unplug the negative cable and the car turns off, its the alternator.

A car with a dead battery cannot be started on its own. If you use another car to jump start the car the car may run. My Lincoln Town Car will not run for long unless on the highway. There is too much of a load on the system. Even with the AC, fan, radio etc off it will stall in traffic with a bad battery. If the battery was drained due to leaving the lights on or does not charge due to corroded cables terminals, the alternator will charge the battery once the terminals are cleaned. You may need to drive for several miles on the highway to fully charge the battery.

You won't be able to start with dead battery. But once the engine is started by jumping off with jumper or battery cables, the alternator will generate adequate charge to keep the engine running.

Be careful if you are unfamiliar with jump starting an engine.... If you try it, please ensure that the cables are properly hooked up (hook one cable to the positive battery(+) post of your car and the other end of the same cable to the +battery post of the car jumping you off. Then, hook the other cable to negative(-) battery post of your car and the other end of the same cable to the negative battery post of the car jumping you off). Cables are generally color coded (RED for +positive, Green or black for negative-).

Now, once the engine is started, your car should run okay, assuming your alternator is functioning properly. Should the car engine stop running for any reason, it will require another boost to re-start. For example, once jump started, you could drive to auto parts store and have them install a new battery for you. It's just that you must understand that someone must help you boost your car again should your car stall or the engine stop runnning, until you replace the battery.

Incidentally, if your battery is dead due to leaving the lights on or something draining the battery accidentally, it should recharge okay, once you jumpstart your engine. The alternator should recharge the battery, unless either the alternator or the battery is failing. Be sure to leave running for a minimum of 20 or 30 minutes to allow time for the battery to re-charge. It may take less time, depending upon the battery / alternator condition. But the longer it runs, the more charge the battery will receive, until fully charged.

you need to make note of your drive belt route arround the pulleys first with a pen a paper. you then need a fifteen mm spanner to hold the auto tensioner back while you slip the belt off the alternator. after that its 3 bolts and it comes out underneath at the front.

take out the fan first, then u'll see the alte. on the bottom left of engin, take the bolt from the top of alte. and the aguster bolt from the bottom of it.(u'll see the belt becomes loss) there is 3 wires that u have to take out, and u done.

There is a pully that will ratchet up and down to loosen or tighten the belt. Take the belt off, unplug the wire from the alternator, and there should only be 2 or 3 bolts holding the alternator on.

Idling with headlights off, around 14.5 to 14.9 volts if it's OK. Start the engine and have a friend bring the engine up to about 800 to 1000 RPM and use a meter to test the battery voltage. With the engine running, the alternator should be generating between 13.5 and 14.5 Volts.

sounds like a starter to me you can pick one up at autozone for about 130.00 part plus 60.00 core the core will be refunded when you bring them the old starter back you can go to autozone.com and check to see if you local store has one in stock

Yes. an alternator can be good but you can still have charging problems if:-

1.Battery is no good.

2.Fan belt slack or worn.

3.Poor or broken wiring connections at alternator.

4.Loose or dirty battery conections.

5.poor or broken wiring between alternator and battery.

6.Alternator rating not large enough for application.

Take the belt back off, then try to bolt the tensioner on.
