What are functions of sculpture?

The function of sculpture is not to decorate but to integrate, not to entertain but to orientate man within the context of his universe.Sculpture inhabits actual space in all its dimensions, and by its own inherent structural logic is able to impress upon our imagination a sense of reality. Whether it be an integral part of an architectural structure or free standing in architectural space or among nature's forms its sets up an inter-relationship between itself and its surroundings. Like life its myriad views assume new aspects under varying conditions; like life it is capable of drawing upon itself new interpretations and transcending them. Since it lives in actual space it interacts with it, measures it and is measured by it. The structure, the density or the translucency of the material, the specific life the work is to live, the rhythms of the time, which engulf the sculptor, join in the interaction and set up relationships that exist between the component. parts of the work and the whole, between the whole and its surroundings.Sculpture is not an ersatz for man, beast, bird or any of these put together arbitrarily. Though it draws from nature structural principles, its functions are as totally different as its materials are. Transcending their physical properties, within the realm of our imagination, sculptured forms assume an aspect of the inter- dependence of all in the making of the ONE.

Sculpture is composed of concrete material interacting with thought, thought which draws its nourishment from experience with form. When concrete material and thought interact with space the resultant forms, in one way or another, recall either nature's forms or formalized aspects of nature's forms. Though sculptured forms live totally different lives from the motifs which they resemble, there is no such thing as non-representational, three dimensional form, and yet sculpture by its very nature is an abstraction. Like architecture it is an organic abstraction in concrete form. When sculpture is wed to the architectural structure or wed to nature's forms and the topography of the site - sculpture wed to any or all of these performs the function of integrating man spiritually to his universe.

What is corn dolly made out of?

Corn Dolly!

Well, I can make a yarn dolly. They should be pretty similar. First, you take a long stalk of corn, and wind it around a piece of cardboard an inch in width as many times as it will allow. Remove the cardboard. Next, tie another piece of straw in the place you want the neck to be and one about a centimeter from the top of the head. Cut the fold of straw at the top and bottom of the dolly. Take 3 strands of straw below the neck. Make a tight braid for each. It should now look like a doll with a head, two arms, and a ghost-like body. Tie a piece of straw where you want the legs to begin. Braid all remaining straw into two legs below the new tie. Tada! You should now have a straw dolly!

What major craft fair in the US has the most exhibitors?

The answer to this question has to be an unequivocal "it depends". The sizes change from year to year, and the definition of "largest" is subject to interpretation. Do you mean the most sales, the most exhibitors, or the most visitors, or some other measure? Many shows advertise themselves as the biggest, and there is no way to measure whether they are accurate or not. The biggest one in recent years is probably the Gold Coast Art Show in downtown Chicago. Or do you want to exclude the "professional" shows, or concentrate on any specific type of craft, as in biggest quilt show, biggest cross-stitch show, etc. What about including other more far-reaching crafts, such as the "Makers Faire" in San Mateo?

How much money does it cost on average to rent a table at art and craft shows?

The cost varies with the prominence of the show. A church parking lot fund raiser will generally cost between $25 - $50. A yearly community festival, or large school festival will be more like $100, and at a major fair event, such as a county fair, or state fair, the cost is in the $100's, and up. For many fairs, it also depends on the location, with booths inside near the doors being much higher than booths outside in the back. There are some "permanent" craft shows in shopping malls that rent out booth space by the month, usually around $100 to $200, depending on size, location, and amenities (electricity, signs, etc). As a registered Native American artist, I usually rent booths at pow wow's and tribal gatherings ranging from $20.00 to $500, again depending on the size and popularity of the show.

Who invented Crayola markers?

Crayola did not invent the crayon. Records show that Europe was the birthplace of the "modern" crayon. The first crayons were made from a mixture of charcoal and oil. Later, powdered pigments of various hues replaced the charcoal. It was discovered that substituting wax for the oil in the mixture made the sticks sturdier and easier to handle.

Crayola Crayons were invented by Binney & Smith in 1902 and first offered for sale in 1903. Alice (Stead) Binney, a school teacher and wife of co-founder Edwin Binney, suggested the company manufacture an inexpensive alternative to imported crayons of that era. The trade name Crayola was coined by Mrs. Edwin Binney who joined the French word "craie," meaning stick of chalk and "ola" from the word "oleaginous," meaning oily. Crayola Crayons are made primarily from paraffin wax and color pigment.

Can you melt glass beads?

Fire the clay like glass, not clay. The problem with melting glass on clay is the coefficient is different. Glass will craze, (crackle) on the clay. If you want the glass to stay on the clay use high fire clay and fire it to bisque first. The second firing with the glass on it should be fired on a schedule that is suitable for the glass. You can not simply fire the glass up to it's melting temperature then allow it to cool without controlling the cooling rate. You may want the rate to be 60ºF/hour to cool depending on the type of glass you are using.

What if you make a craft to sell with NFL fabric bought from a store?

You might want to look at the Precious Moments case, you can't make something and call it licensed, you can however with some provisions make items for sale. " The First Circuit Court specifically rejected the copyright claim where La Infantil was being accused with unauthorized use of copyrighted fabric, saying that "bedding items manufactured with lawfully acquired, authentic fabric with copyrighted design were not infringing derivative works." The Court also said "The copyright owner's right to distribute the work is limited by the "First Sale" doctrine, which permits the owner of a legally acquired lawfully made copy of a work to sell that particular copy without the consent of the copyright holder". You need to make sure people realize it's not a licensed product and I always recommend a disclaimer. The statement on the selvage - for personal use only - is not backed up with any federal or state statute. I took Major League Baseball to court when they said I couldn't use their fabric to make items for sale. They fought me for 6 months then settled on my terms. Well, from my research, so far what I got is this: I have a great idea for an NFL Licensed Product. Where can I find information on obtaining an NFL license? For information on obtaining a license to produce NFL merchandise, call (212) 450-2000 and ask for the NFL Licensing Information Line. I got this from the NFL official website. Which makes me also wonder about making things such as Nascar or Baseball teams, etc. Well I am certainly going to keep researching this matter, because it is very important to me too, seeing as how I am just now starting to decide to make NFL stuff too, but maybe when I am able to call the number they listed above I'll have the answer. From what this says, it would seem to me that maybe you do have to have a license to sell things you make of NFL. Well I hope this helps and maybe somebody will find out the answer soon. :) We sell NFL Fabrics on our website so I have the breakdown on what you can do with the NFL Team fabrics. You can make anything you want with the fabric for you personal use but you cannot making anything to resell. It is a great fabric to make NFL products for your friends and Family. If you want to Make licensed NFL Products you need to call the NFL License department and then obtain a permit to make the fabric and then make the products. The NFL fabric that is sold in stores is not for making products to resell. In order to make items with NFL Fabrics you need to have your own fabric manufactured and licensed by the NFL. Yes.

First Sale Doctrine is an accepted legal defense in such matters. The basic premise is simple. Once the manufacturer of a copyrighted item releases it into the open market the copyright holder loses control over what is done with the item. Generally the company/manufacturer who holds the copyright will try to use trademark laws to prevent items such as material from being made into articles of clothing or whatever it may be, and sold by private consumers. However, trademark laws only apply when the seller deliberately presents the article as being original or creates the impression that it is an original (knock off's). An example is the Disney Corporation recently attempted to sue a single mom who earned extra income by using Disney fabrics to make pillows to sell at craft shows. The court ruled that the woman in no way infringed on trademark rights and could continue her pursuit and ordered DC to pay all her legal costs and damages. Common sense should prevail in such situations, obviously you cannot copy DVD's as trademark laws apply. You may however buy material with soccer balls, baseballs, team logos, etc. and make pillows, etc. as long as you do not try to sell them as original NFL, NBA, NLB and so forth products. FYI, companies and organizations will ALWAYS tell you it is illegal.
