With any battery on any car, the negative cable is ALWAYS the first off and last on.
Probably the main relay up under the dash above the steering column on a right hand drive car - not sure about a LHD. I had this happen to me - once I drove 5 minutes down the road to the shop. When I returned to the car it would crank over as normal but wouldn't fire until I left it for a few minutes. Other times it would start fine every time then for no apparent reason I'd get a run of no starts.
I detected no spark so replaced the ignition coil in the distributor followed by the main relay - if the main relay fails the EFI module gets no power so no spark is generated but I'm pretty sure my coil was bad as well because it wouldn't produce a spark from my workbench power supply.
Answeryah um i just bought a 94 Honda prelude also and we went to look at it and started it and it worked fine so we shut the engine off. then like five minutes later we wanted to take it for a test drive and it wouldn't start and the car dealer said it was the relay so they put a new one in but sometimes it still doesnt start. so i don't know if that was the problem or not. AnswerDon't know much about cars - but my cousin's boyfriend fixed this exact same problem just LAST NIGHT!!!! My problems was the same...when the car did start, which was most of the time, it turned over and "caught" very quickly. However, it could sit overnight and not start or I could have turned it off 5 minutes prior and not start. It would just turn over and over and not "catch" or whatever.Chris, my cousin's boyfriend, looked it up online and we think the cause was the main relay. Sometimes it develops corrosion and needs to be wiped off real good. That is what he did and so far, today, I have had no problems.
AnswerIF it's still not getting fuel (IS getting spark) after changing all that, I would see if it has a relay/circuit that is supposed to run the fuel pump for two seconds after the key is turned to 'on'. There is probably a little cube in the fuse box area that has a circuit that is failing intermittantly.....(get a repair manual and do some research and trouble shooting) Answerusually the main relay will cause this problem if its hot out, hot in ur car, or hot from running hard. if u park it in the summer witht he windows up and it heats up inside ur relay could be causing the problem. this is because the solder points on the circuit board inside crack and when its hot they expand and loose connection. i pulled mine, used a magnifying glass to find the point with the crack, and re-melted the solder. never had the problem since. What is a Tps throttle switch?
TPS (throttle position Sensor) is a variable potentiometer! Is is connected to the throttle shaft on the throttle body. The ECM/PCM (computer) uses the voltage from the TPS to determine fuel delivery based on the angle of the throttle shaft or valve (driver demand)
A loose or broken TPS can cause an unstable idle or intermittent bursts of fuel from the fuel injectors, because the ECM/PCM is fooled into thinking the throttle is moving.
Check the ECM electronic control module under the distributor cap. if its bad it wont start or will start and run bad and die
Bad battery, starter, or loose or corroded cables.
Can a incorrect engine timing cause a engine to rev up to 5000RPM?
Incorrect timing can cause several problems. One of which is high idling. 5000 rpm sounds high though, there may be other problems as well.
This could be the starter, or the ignition switch.
E150 will not crank and starter does not engage?
Flat battery, neutral safety switch, starter realy poor battery connections.
How do you set timing on 1990 mini?
the same as any other car, with a timing light and a marking on the crankshaft pully. Hope this helps
How do you diable a python alarm when you have detatched the battery now the car won't start?
step 1 - phrase your question so it makes sense. step 2 - include meaningful information. step 3 - follow instructions from answer that was derived from a non-gibberish question.
That is certainly a possibility. Shifter linkage can cause problems with transmissions but you cannot know for certain without getting a little closer to the problem.
If the transmission shifts out of and back into park and the wheels actually lock then it's PROBABLY not a shift linkage problem. If you aren't mechanically inclined you may need to take the vehicle to a specialist.
If the transmission is shifting out of park normally but the transmission will not engage, you probably have something wrong with the transmission, such as the hydraulic pump, internal valve body, clutch pack or any of a number of other potential problems.
Good luck.
If the car is a manual transmission, you can push start it. Turn on the ignition, put the car in neutral, and have someone push you to about 5 mph. Shift the car into 2nd gear and pop the clutch. This should get the car going to the nearest auto parts store where you can get a new battery.
Since it isn't mauel try looking at the fuses located in the floor of the passenger side, one maybe old or just maybe loose, its worth a try that's what was wrong with mine. and it's automatic
How you know when the starter is going bad?
It begins to sound bad: slow, crunchy, squeaky or some other bad noise.
How do i start my astro van when the key will not turn in the ignition?
get a new key or break ignition with flathead screwdriver or try wiggling old ket around
Appended Aug. 7th, 2010: Possible pass-lock failure. this is a switch that is part of the ignition switch, and must be replaced with the whole ignition switch.
Put new battery in your vw passat now it wont start?
what you need to do is take of +terminal from batt put key in egg turn to on pois leave it for 10 min reconnect + and away you go.
If the object that clicks has the positive lead from the battery attached to it, it is the solenoid.
AnswerI am having that problem with my 92 Topaz right now. This is a problem with your starter. The clicking sound you hear coming from beside the battery is actually you ignition sending a signal to it. That is actually a relay for the starter and a couple other accesories within the car. The solenoid is actually the little round cylinder on the starter itself. Try checking the starter with a pair of jumper cables connected directly to the battery once the starter is removed (The starter is located directly under the oil filter in the front of the engine and it has three bolts connecting it to the engine)(To remove these bolts you must look from under the car by the left tire directly toward the starter and you will see the bolts). Place the starter on the ground next to the car. Connect the hot lead of the jumper cables to where the plug is connected to on the starter. Touch the ground connection for the jumper cables to the actual side of the starter(generally black) because the metal here conducts electricity and is grounded(do not connect it to the aluminum area around the location of the bolt holes, it will do nothing). Beware...DO NOT ACTAULLY TOUCH THE STARTER WITH YOUR BODY IN THIS PROCESS, JUST THE CABLES. There WILL be a spark when this happens. At that point. The round piece within the starter with the tines on it will jump out toward the side of the starter with a kick and it will also turn as well. If it seems to turn very slow, you will need to either replace the starter or have it rebuilt at an Auto Electric Repair Shop. If however, it turns with some speed, the starter is fine and you may reinstall it. You would at that point replace the clicking relay at say "Advance Auto". It is relatively cheap, all things considered. You must make sure to mark where the disconnected terminals go back to when you replace the relay. If this still does not work. This means one of two things. For one check your terminals to make sure they are in the proper original location. If that is not it, it is the very rare case that the wire from the relay to the starter went bad...also available at "Advance Auto". Good Luck.Your car won't make a sound even
With a good battery will just "click"
How do you fix a 1999 firebird that won't start but turns over?
First check to see if your getting fuel, you will or should hear the fuel pump prime itself when you turn the key forward.Stop the key before you turn car to start position. On the front of your fuel rail you1ll see like a bike tire cap. undo that cap and give a little push on the valve,it will spray out so don`t put your face over it.If you here the pump and your gettin fuel, pull a plug leave it attached to wire and rest it on a grounded area(metal) have someone crank engine and look for sparks at the plug.No spark=ignition problem,no fuel pressure=fuel pump problem.Good luck
if the motor is turning over, look where the air filter is located follow it to the throttle body there is a sensor on top it is black with two or three screws i believe its called ICM unplug this sensor and crank the car, if it starts this sensor is bad around $125
The starter motor will not engage on your '87 Crown Victoria 5.0 auto how can you fix this?
If there's nothing wrong with the starter itself, there's a 99% chance it's the starter relay (located on the passenger/front side of the engine bay, mounted on the fender behind the battery). It's a square part with a few wires attached. I don't think many auto parts stores can test this to see if it works, but if I recall, it's a pretty inexpensive part (had to replace it on my 87 Grand Marquis). Good luck.
Will a car start with a broken starter?
Depending on how broken it is you can sometimes hit the starter with a wrench or something hard and it may start.
Pretty much by definition, if the starter is broken the car won't start by using the starter, although the above can sometimes work as a quick fix. However, the car will start without using a starter, especially if it is a manual transmission,
Turn the key on, and push the car in neutral (even not very fast). Put it in gear and release the clutch while it is moving, which turns the motor and starts the car. The same can be done with most automatics, but you must push them much faster.
Why does your car intermittenly die out when you start it in the cold weather?
a little bit of more information... i drive a 1997 maxima and sometimes it will start right up, and others it will start up and idle down and die like instantly unless i hit the gas and rev it a couple times. I got it checked out like 4 times... my mechanic put a cold start solenoid in it, cleaned all the valved, put 2 cool temp sensors in it and it still has the same problem...anyone have ideas?
yes, the shift linkage has a switch to only allow the car to start in either park, or neutral. All automatic transmissions have a neutral safety switch. It is misadjusted or defective.
