Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

Why would it sound like the starter stays engaged when reconnecting the negative battery cable after installing a new starter?

Well you might want to check the wires that connect back to the starter. If you missed one that should be bolted to the starter it'll be hanging or stuck somewhere - most likely touching metal. If it is touching any metal it will always try to engage when you hook up the other end of the wire to the battery. -Sara replace your selonid

ENGINE wont turn over on 350?

Check that battery volts are at least 11.8, and terminals are tight. Check for same voltage at starter when key is turned. - If no volts at the starter, the solenoid is faulty. If there is a charge at the starter and it does nothing then it, or it's ground are faulty.

Why would a 1993 Buick Skylark not turn over?

Does your information center disappear when you try to crank. Do you hear anything happening when you try to start? You should hear the starter solenoid operate. A low or bad battery or the connections cause poor battery connection and poor charging also. Spray WD40 on all connections. Head lights work? - NO? Look at battery. Yes? Look at the 12 volts that must feed the starter solenoid when the ignition is turned to start. A cheapie voltmeter is a real useful detecctive in these type of problems.

Why would the starter just spin when you try to start the car?

the sprag clutch ( overrun gear ) is gone and needs to be replaced

a new part can be bought but normally the complete starter is changed

in some cases squirting diesel oil on the sprag clutch can cure the problem

but it normally reoccurs again

Will your car push start if the clutch interlock switch is bad?

Clutch interlock should only prevent you from cranking the starter without the clutch depressed. You should be able to push start with this malfunctioning since the rotating motor is doing just what it would be if the starter worked.

What causes sounds to start?

Sounds are created when an object vibrates, causing disturbances in the surrounding medium, typically air. These vibrations generate pressure waves that propagate outward from the source. When these waves reach our ears, they cause the eardrum to vibrate, and the brain interprets these vibrations as sound. Factors like the frequency and amplitude of the vibrations influence the pitch and volume of the sound we hear.

Car stalls when engine is warmed up will not start on it's ownbut will start fine with a jump?

Im thinking you may want to look into a possible prob. with your alternater..

AnswerPersonally I've experienced this myself I'd say it was the advance not the alternator. On the distributor most often , you'll find either an electronic or vacumm advance . If it's a gas engine when it gets hot before it stalls if the engine starts to knock or sound like a diesel engine then it can be pretty safe to say it's an advance problem or if you don't have an electric distibutor see if the cap and the base are tight if one of those is loose then the timing for your spark would be off and as the vehicle gets hot the advance if working proparly would advance the timing out of sink beyond the reach of the spark inside the distibutor cap and Knock or diesel and eventually stall and not start until it cooled unless jump started in which case the extra juice gives bigger spark and extends its reach within the distibutor cap.

check the distibutor for tightness if its not then try starting your car and ever so slightly turn the distibutor until your engine sounds better its a quick fix and may take a couple of tries but it should help. if it is tight then look into getting an timing advance most part store can help explain the replacement (very easy and straight forward) or even help diagnose it but if your part store doesn't seem to help or don't really know much them selves find a new store too

1999 land rover disco 2 with 228000miles replaced starter but when hot it will not start the motor will not turn over after it cools down it starts any ideas?

Yep. When the wire is cold, the current flows from the battery to the starter very easily. As things get hot, the resistance in the wire becomes so great, and the current needed to crank the engine is so high, it just cannot push enough current to the starter until the wire cools down again.

That's the cause. I suggest you go explain it to someone at Pep Boys for the cure, because other than replacing the wire to the starter I have no cure for you. Maybe that IS the cure.

If the starter will sometimes engage and sometimes just spin when you turn the key is this a sign of a defective starter?

This sounds like there are some teeth missing on the flywheel. If the bad spot is positioned over the starter gears, the starter will just spin but if it catches on a good part, it will turn the engine over fine.

Just what the previous answer said. You have some teeth missing on your flywheel. There is probably nothing wrong with any of your starters.

If you have a manual tranny, just put the car in gear and try to push it forward until you fill the flyweel engage with the starter. The car should start then. My 1986 ford aerostar had the same porblem as stated above and this was an easy solution until I had the time and money to fix it correctly.

Why will a 1997 Jeep Wrangler turn over but not start with a new battery if it worked before the battery went dead?

Did you hook the battery up backwards before realizing the wrong polarity? Kiss the PCM goodbye.

Did you take the nice thin plastic cap off the negative pole that is placed on some batteries?. It's easy to miss if you are not looking for it and paying close attention. It's also possible that the new batter was DOA (Dead on Arrival), it can happen.

The ac clutch starter fuse 30a in 93 dodge Dakota keeps blowing when us blower fan then truck wont start?

Disconnect the electrical connection at the blower fan motor, put a new fuse back in and see if the truck starts and runs without blowing the fuse. If so replace the blower fan motor.

If the fuse still blows, disconnect the ac clutch wire from the ac compressor and try again.

What is wrong if the car won't start by turning the key but will if you cross the solenoid?

Either the ignition switch is bad, or the solenoid itself.

I just changed them both. Also put in a new battery and changed the Neutral safety switch. I am getting power to the "boot" connection on the relay selinoid when the ignition is turned on. Anyone have any idea where to go next??

1996 geo tracker will not come on the headlights and radio work but the car wont start what could be wrong could it be the starter or the alternator?

The starter is where I'd go first. I've just recently just had this problem with my '97. The tow truck driver clued me in when he had me turn the key and he rapped the starter from the top and I started right away. I was told that the starter is bad and after that I believed him because this has happened before and I've not had an answer until this last guy. He was my savior that day.
