Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

Why would a Hyundai Sonata crank a long time but won't start?

I am working on the same problem in a 1999 Elantra Wagon, and have read that it could be the crank sensor. Hope this helps. here are a couple of possiblities: bad crank sensor, broken or jumped timing belt, bad fuel pump, bad cam sensor. Answer was this the only problem or was the transmission not shifting before too?

What can be wrong when there is gas in the oil and the car wont start?

An injector is probably sticking and causing "wash down". Gasoline can then leak past the cylinder walls and get into the oil. That much fuel in the cylinder will make it impossible to start the engine. I'd also check the fuel pressure regulator

Is your motor ruined if you used ether to start your 6.2 diesel engine?

oh ya one more thing never use ether if you are using the glow plugs

Can not having gas cause a car not to start?

You are correct. If you have no fuel, there is nothing to combust in the internal combustion engine under your hood. If you suspect this is the case, you can use a bit of what is called starting fluid to see if you car will fire and begin to run. Starting fluid is sold in small spary cans at any auto parts store, and it is fairly cheap. You spray a good shot into the air intake and try to start your car. As the starting fluid hits the intake manifold and is taken into the cylinders, the engine will "try to start" but will not run. This is an indication that you have a fuel problem.

What would cause a 1991 Camaro v6 3.1 motor not to start. i replaced the spark plugs and wires?

Well, if everything is in good condition (cables, spark plugs, battery, etc, etc.) it could be the VATS anti theft system. From what I understand, this system is a problem on the later model third gens. Check your instrument panel when you attempt to crank that car. If you see a light come on that says "Security," that's it. What is supposed to happen is when you put your key into the ignition, the circuit is completed with the antitheft system and if the resistance provided by the chip in the key matches the resistance standard in the VATS module, the car is able to crank up. There's a resistor chip built into the key (you can't mistake it). Some people measure the resistance of their chip in the key(there are 15 different resistance values) and wire a little resistor like you can buy from Radio Shack with the same value onto the circuit side of the connector. If it doesnt crank then, you either have the wrong resistor or something else is wrong.

Answeri had the same problem with my 91 camaro v6 i got a new battery, accelerator. and starter it turned out i needed a new cables

could also be the timing on the engine. have the timing checked

Answervague..

starting is a common problem with this kind of car. there are three main solutions, and they are easy to diagnose. this could go for any car. if car does not crank, it is the battery. you can recharge the battery with a jump, but you'll need to replace the battery soon. so if that's the case, use another car to jump the maro and limp on over to the nearest auto parts store to get a new battery. if engine cranks, and engine does not even fumble, or misfires so deeply, then this is a sign that theres no ignition, or too much resistance along the way to spark. you can take a multimeter to every wire to check this, from the distributor to elsewhere. if engine turns, and with hard press on accelerator, it catches and then fumbles, its a fuel system problem. replace filter, and if you can run engine with enough hard accel, try to use injector cleaner as instructed. there is the possibility of vaccuum leaks, but this is a problem which tends to build over time and effect all situations of driving.

Could be ignition coil bad.

Your front wheel make grinding noise while turning?

grinding on front wheel is caused by 2 things. a bad or loose wheel bearing,or worn out brakes, have them both checked You might also want to check the level of fluid in the power steering reservoir - low or lack of fluid will also cause a noise (although more of a whining than a grinding).

This can also be caused by worn or damaged central velocity joints if the vehicle is front wheel or four wheel drive.

The regulator won't be shown separately on your Pontiac. Most GM vehicles of that vintage had Alternators with built in regulators.

What causes the car not to start and iginition not to go out?

If the ignition isn't firing then you're looking at an electrical problem: Bad spark plugs, distributor, cables or battery. If you're frequently draining your battery and needing jump starts, the alternator could be failing as well.

Can a locksmith replace a car key?

In today's world the method above is slightly outdated. The real answer is; it truly depends on what car you have. If you have a newer model (2005 or higher) you may need a professional locksmith to program the chip to the new car key. If you have an older model you will need a locksmith to look up your key code to make you a new car key. You can call your automobile dealership but they will charge you 5X the amount than anyone or anywhere else. If you have a push start, that can be tricky. BMW, Mercedes and luxury cars may have proprietary car keys so you will need to check with a professional to get an exact answer.
