Car Starting Problems

Dead battery, jammed starter rotor arm - it it's manual, put it in gear and then rock the car back and forth to un-stick the rotor arm. If it's the battery, main lights will be dim or not work.

If the key has to be held to keep the car running then the ignition switch is most likely going bad. On some models the switch can be easily replaced. On others the switch removal can be a large task.

There might be bypass kits available on the internet for your car depending on which security system you have. The only other option would probably be to replace the security system itself.

It will buck, choke & backfire but as long as you don't persist (shut it off right away) it should be o/k. Set the timing properly (15BTDC), firing order is 142536, # 1 cylinder is passenger rear. On any engine, the possibilities are, break a timing chain, bent a rod, backfire.

A bad car battery makes engine start for a second and will not go through, a second attempt of turning the key will just make a tick" sound and no more. This kind of problem is due to a defective battery very sure.

I would say a badcam or crank sensor. if not scan system for codes

you must check the firing order and compare that to the order on the distributor. Ask your dealer for this info, or get a book.

starter problems on 02 Pontiac grand am. Remove battery and take to napa or most any parts store. They will check battery for you. The starter and selonoid are combined so they must be considered a single component. Iff you know your battery is good next follow the ground wire from battery to make sure it has solid connection to vehicle with no corrosion to hamper connection. Also make sure battery cables are clean and tight. Is your fuse blown? When you attempt to start if it makes a grinding or whirring noise it is most likely the starter. If it does nothing see if your interior light seems to din or flicker when you attempt to start then (most likely) bad starter. Starters can be removed and rebuilt if replacement at retail is extremely high

It probably bent the valves. Call a dealer and ask if it is an iterference engine. If so it probably bent valves. You can run a compresson test to verify. 1992 LS400 is not an interference engine. It is unlikely that the valve train was damaged by losing the timing belt. Assuming the engine didn't run hot long enough to do damage, the timing is probably off. The timing belt needs to be checked to ensure that the timing marks are properly aligned. Ignition problems could also be to blame, but I would check timing first. Just for info, interference engines were installed late 1994 and newer.

The same thing just happened to my '94 z28 and it was the key ignition lock as far as I understand. The cylinder where my keys were inserted had screwed up and messed up the resistor chips on my keys. Had to have two new keys made and the key ignition lock replaced. It cost me $397 at the dealership.

p.s. When your resistor chips on your keys arent being read by the cylinder correctly (like if there wet or damaged) the security system shuts down the starter and fuel systems for three minutes.

bypass it by connecting the battery cable directly to the starter motor. remember the solenoid is just a low voltage switch which exists so that high current cables do not have to be run to the starter system. wheni you turn the ignition key it should activate an electro-magnet in the solenoid which causes a metal bar to connect the battery power to the starter motor. so just bypass it to prove whether it works or not.

remove the ignition tumbler from column and crank it with a insulated handle flatblade screwdriver if the ignition is located in the dash remove key tumbler by inserting a small pin in the hole located above the key hole and it will pop out using a screwdriver and turn it over that way

If the keyswitch is damaged and THAT's the reason you can't get the key out, you'll need a new keyswitch. For most vehicles that involves removing part of the steering wheel assembly, but it all depends on what's involved to replace the switch in YOUR vehicle. The Saturn L series IS equipped with air bags, and it DOES have the ignition switch on the steering wheel. So have someone do that work for you. Air bags can be very dangerous when they go off unexpectedly, plus they're quite expensive.

On a typical 4-cylinder 626, the starter motor is located on the lower end of the engine, to the right of the transaxle (removal would require raising the vehicle and properly securing it with appropriate jack stands). Get a helper to turn on the ignition without starting the engine. At the same time you listen at the fuel filler door with the fuel cap off. You should hear the pump run for a few seconds and then shut down. If you do not hear the pump check the fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay. If they are good the pump is defective. If the pump runs and you are not getting fuel to the engine either the fuel filter is clogged or the pump is running but not pumping fuel. Replace the fuel filter and proceed from there.

Yes, if the drive gears are going too far in toward the flywheel because a shim is missing, you will damage either the starter gears, flywheel, or both.

I have an 1988 lincoln town car with 5600 org. miles it has not been used in the last six years..it is running good only problem it is hard starting and runs rough for about a mile and then gets real smooth and no problems

Do you mean no crank/no start or crank/no start.... to put it simply, does the engine turn over?
