How can you tell if a cat is ill?
It can be difficult to tell when a cat is sick because they hide the symptoms really well - often owners will report their cat is "just not acting right" when they take the cat into the vet. However, some signs include vomiting (particularly of yellow foam, dark brown stuff that looks like coffee grounds or bright red fluid), diarrhea (check the litter box - it's pretty obvious), not eating with the usual appetite, less interest in playing or interacting and otherwise changing their normal behavior patterns.

Why do they say that cats have 9 lives?
Cats do not really have nine lives however they do have a higher survival rate due to their good sense of hearing. Their hearing enables them to land on all fours a majority of the time. By landing on all fours after falling from great heifghts and escaping with minimal injuries, it has lead people to believe that cats do have nine lives. Cats like all animals and humans have one life, however they have a greater sense of hearing which lead them to survive falls other animals and humans can not.
Does cat litter get rid of musty smells?
Cat litter is better to soak up liquids like oil on the garage floor. I have sprinkled plain baking soda on furniture and carpet, let it sit for several hours and then vacuumed up the residue. Usually the smell is removed. If you have sunshine and can put furniture outside, a day in the sun will also help resolve the problem.

Will your cat get sick if they drink water from a Christmas tree holder?
It depends what you put in your Christmas tree water and how your stand is built. My 12 year old cat has been drinking Christmas tree water since she was born and is still alive and kicking. However, we have never put anything in the water. This year, because we got our tree so early we bought some tree nutrients and have been adding it to the water. We also got a new tree stand so that the cats can not get into it and drink it as with the years before. I wouldn't want her drinking chemicals....
Never feed cats anything other than their cat food. This way they will live longer and not get sick from human food.
Will your two cats prevent or scare away rodents?
Cats will hunt and kill any rodents they find in the home. However, in my experience, rodents are not smart enough to be deterred or scared away by cats. In other words, cats are great at killing rodents, but they don't prevent rodents from entering the home in the first place, and they don't necessarily scare them away once they've entered the home, either.
My apartment building has mice, and even though I try to keep clean, I've had several mice in my apartment over the years. Usually, I just find the corpses (or what's left of them) in the morning, as the mice come out to play (and get killed) at night, when I'm asleep.
One time, however, I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, and found my two cats stalking a mouse. They hadn't harmed it yet; they were just taunting it and playing with it. The poor thing was shaking so badly; it was terrified.
If it hadn't been the middle of the night, I would've taken the mouse outside and released him. But it was the middle of the night, so I picked the mouse up, put him in a shoebox, and put the shoebox out of the cats' reach, intending to release him in the morning.
When I got up in the morning, the shoebox was empty. The mouse was gone. I thought, "Oh good. He ran away on his own."
Later that night, I see one of my cats digging frantically into my sneaker. Guess what I find inside the sneaker? Yep. The mouse. Of course, it might not have been the SAME mouse, but I don't get that many mice in my apartment -- maybe one every year or two -- so it probably was the same mouse.
This time I took him outside and released him. But he obviously was not smart enough to flee a home that he KNEW had cats in it.
However, there was another time when I saw one of my cats running around with a mouse in her mouth. I thought it was one of her toy mice, but then she dropped it, and it started running! It ran behind a big, heavy bookshelf, and I never saw it again, nor did I find its remains.
So I guess that one was smart enough to flee the home? Or maybe it left for a different reason (i.e., it couldn't find any food or places to nest, so there was no reason to stay).
I don't think rodents are intelligent enough to smell a cat in the home and flee because of it. They may flee if they have an encounter with the cat, but even that is not guaranteed. The only thing that IS guaranteed is this: if the mouse remains in the home, eventually the cats will find it and kill it.
Full grown cats are not afraid of rats. They will pounce on a rat and break it's neck bone in short order rendering them paralyzed and if the cat is hungry it will eat a rat.
I'm sure this is true of many cats, but some are afraid of rats. The only time I ever had a rat living in the house, I tried to get one of my cats who was a great mouser to go after the rat, but she was afraid of it and wouldn't go near it. I actually thought that I had a mouse living in my cabinet, but it turned out to be quite a large rat. When I finally saw it, I put it into a container and put it outside. Fortunately it never returned to the house.
Many years later my daughter had a couple of pet rats. Of course we made sure that that our cats were never alone with the rates unless they were in their cage. The cats liked to sit on their cage, which annoyed the rats and they would nip at the cats until they go off the cage. Eventually all except for one of the cats became afraid of them. The one that wasn't afraid is the one with with the big prey drive, although even he is cautious around them. I think that he might have killed them, if he had been left alone with them though. The cat with the least prey drive is the most cautious around the rats, although he is a large cat and very territorial and will challenge other cats, dogs or even a raccoon if it comes in his yard, so why is he afraid of the rats. Go figure.
