How do you get the service engine soon light off on the dashboard of a 2000 Olds Alero?
go to autozone and see why its on, they check it free. One word of caution however, they will give you the code, they do not diagnose the problem. They may guess and suggest a part(as they sell parts)based on the code description, but this is still a shot in the dark.
I had a light on and I went to Advance Autoparts and the counter guy printed out a history of codes, all of which came back that my O2 sensor on the tailpipe was faulty. When I changed the sensor, I had to diconnect the battery to reset the warning light. You have to leave it disconnected about 1/2 hour to reset.
Before going to Autozone and checking codes, try the "reset" button located in the fuse box (open driver's door and look on the side of the dash). Key in the "on" position, engine not running, hold the reset button until you hear the chime ring a couple of times. Once the light is reset, if it comes back on within several miles of driving I would definitely have it checked out.
There can be several reasons for the light to come on. It can be because the O2 sensor has been eliminated with the U-bend delete or it can sometimes be related to the CAI modification. The high flow cat can also set off the SES light as the rear O2 sensor (if applicable) will "think" that the cat is not performing correctly. Get your engine scanned to know for sure. Many popular auto parts retailers will do it for free. For related info on your modified engine see the postings on www.clubgp.com Hope this helps.

1997 dodge stratus diagnostic code 31?
If it is the MIL code you are talking about, my manual shows 31 as being associated with the EVAP system. Problem is that there are many "31" codes for EVAP. What is needed is the scan code. Like P1495 or P1494.
All of these scan codes are listed under a "31" MIL code.
P0443: EVAP emission control system purge valve C fault.
P0441: Insufficient or excessive vapor flow detected.
P0442: EVAP emission control system leak (small)
P0445: Leak detection monitor is unable to pressurize the system (large leak)
P1486: Plug or pinch detected between purge solenoid and fuel tank.
P1495: Leak detection pump solenoid circuit fault.
P1494: Leak detection pump switch does not respond to input.
You can get more info on the scan codes at you local library. Locally here (Seattle), I can access All Data and Chilton via the library. No fee. I assume you have the same.
Good luck.
hey dude call up advance auto parts and give them the code and they will look the code number up in the book. i know it because i work there and use the book everyday. goodluck Answer
I own an 89 Dodge Dakota and from my experiences and research the reason that the check engine light does not stay on is because it goes into what is called a "limp in mode" which helps get you to a service station. If you have a Haynes manual or can get one, foudn at NAPA and Advacned Auto, you can look up the code fairly easy. I know that on mine the check engine light has never stayed on but the computer stores the code until it is cleared. I hope I have been helpful.
What do you do if your 2000 Nissan Pathfinder check engine light is on but a scan shows no fault?
1999 Pathfinder: I had the computer checked 3 times. But no code was identified that pointed to any specific problem. Each reset caused the light to go away for different periods of time. Anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 weeks. Once it even went on and off within several days on its own. Best guess was emmissions, fuel, or loose connection on something. The car runs fine with no other symptoms. The light has been on now for 2 weeks. I'll reset again, have my mecahnic look over the engine, and see what happens. My 2000 Pathfinder has run with the check engine light on since 20,000 miles I now have 149,000 miles. It started when I changed the air filter to a K&N. My local mechanic has checked it numerous times and the computer shows no problems. You may want to check the air filter. I also own a 2002 Pathfinder the check engine light came on due to the seal on the fuel cap not making a proper seal. I replaced the seal and the light reset and has not come back on in a year.
It could be fuel pump, fuel filter or out of fuel. To be certain, you can always use a code scanner to see if there are any stored codes.

Why does your car vibrate and has engine check light?
Most likely one or more of your cylinders is not firing properly. Take it to a mechanic; they've got a device that plugs into your car and reads the diagnostic code telling you why the engine check light is on, which will be more informative than us attempting to guess.

May go out after filling and driving. Give it a few days before getting it looked at. Below are some insights.
Pull the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self tests the computer runs the car through a drive cycle, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. Therefore, another problem may exist. It is emission related. OR hook up a scanner that is capable of clearing codes, and hope that none are still active. Disconnecting the battery can create other headaches and will not likely solve your dilemma. Best bet is to contact the local snap-on dealer and have him refer you to a known good shop that specializes in this technology-he will know.
The "check engine light" is a warning light that is illuminated, usually when there is a problem with the emission system, but may also occur if the computer detects a misfiring cylinder, knocking, or other symptom of your engine running outside of its normal operation.
It is a good thing once you understand it.
A check engine light is often simply the result of a loose gas cap, which triggers error code P0452.
But understand that many scenarios are possible with the "check engine light" The vehicle's powertrain computer (note that some vehicles have 17 different computers) will run a series of self-tests. They will only run under certain criteria. And they can be vastly different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some self-tests are not run until preceding ones have run successfully. So if there is a problem in one particular area that is preventing another self test from running, you can have a situation where one problem is fixed, but another still exists. If you fix a problem and drive the car through a drive cycle that sets the monitor (or self test) the light will go off as it passes that criteria that triggered it in the first place.
After 1996, the auto industry went to a idea called OBD II (on board diagnostics). This was to get all the manufacturers onto a similar plane for troubleshooting and powertrain control. While they still differ vastly, many corrections and adaptations were made for technicians to better fix the check engine light problems. Prior to this there were so many different and poor troubleshooting data from a check engine light problem that resolving the problem was much more difficult. Many early warning light of this nature were set to illuminate based on mileage. An Oxygen sensor was one of the things that were meant to be replaced when that mileage was hit. This is much like many current "Change oil lights that are set based on a pre-set mileage.
In this specific case, where the check engine light and the low fuel light come on at nearly the same time, it is possible that the check engine light came on because the engine ran lean for a second or two, caused by low fuel pump pressure, which in turn was caused by low fuel level in the tank. If the engine is running normally and smoothly, fill the tank and give it a few days use to see if the light goes off before seeking further help. If the engine is not running well, lacks power, or otherwise seems abnormal, further troubleshooting is required immediately.
Many auto parts supply stores will read the OBD-II code from your car at no charge.
Was it the "Check Engine" light or the "Check Gauge" light that came on? I know some of the later fords had a check gauge light that would come on if you left your fuel filler cap off or loose, or if you were low on fuel.
How do you reset the change oil soon light on a 2001 Saturn L200 series?
Under the hood, next to the battery, is a fuse box. Lift the lid (instructions are on the lid) and with the keyswitch on but the engine not running, press and hold the button that says "oil". The book says 5 seconds, but hold it for about 10. If someone is watching the dash lights while you do that, the change oil light should flash briefly. After you're finished, turn off the key, then start the engine to make sure it worked.
Start by replacing the spark plugs. If that does not fix it, replace the plug wires. If that does not solve the problem have a compression test run. You could have a burnt valve. Also if the car is overheating or loosing coolant, you may have a blown head gasket. more than likey it's your fuel injector on the cylinder #2
