CV Joints

The 2000 Ram had u joints, not cv joints at the front axle.

i want to know what cu is used for

Remove the wheel. Using a punch, tap out the dented nut locking ring. Remove the axle nut. Remove the cotter pin and nut on the steering rod and pop the steering rod off using a suitable puller or try tapping on the nut (not the threads). Remove the two ball joint nuts and bolts (17MM) Pull the assembly off the half shaft and tie it off to the side. Give a good hard yank on the old shaft to pull it out of the tranny. Install the new half-shaft in reverse order.

Buy a split boot from the parts store- that way you won't have to remove the shaft.

As long as you have the half shaft out, why not replace it since there is probably some damage to it from having a damaged boot?

Jack up vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove rotor. Disconnect lower ball joint. Disconnect tie rod end. Disconnect stabilizer end link. Remove axle nut. Pull steering knuckle out and remove outer CV joint from knuckle. Use a crowbar and snap inner CV out of transmission. Reverse to install.

chances are if your boot was ripped on your cv its usually toast and the bearings can be put back in and it be rebuilt but if dirt got into it from a torn boot its usually not worth the hassle of rebuilding just buy a new one

you must remove the caliper for the brakes,pull off the rotor,remove the axle nut which is a 36mm socket also unbolt the bottom shock,unhook bottom ball joint, my self i took off the whole spindle there is much more room to slide the axle out.now there are six bolts on the in side of the axle the socket size is a 15mm with a long extention if you don't have a air tools loosen the bolts on the end of the axle first before you pull of the spindle so the axle wouldn't turn on you so easy,its not that hard just use common sence

i would just get the entire drive axle..do it your self, it may ba alot cheaper.Hope this helps

No, the CV joint is the "flex" part of the drive shafts. The differential is part of the transmission on a fwd car that allows the two axles to turn at different speeds when turning a corner.

Well the clicking noise almost always means that it's to late for preventative action, because your CV boot (little rubber accordion looking thing) has already been cracked or split and has allowed some sort of road contaminants into the boot, like sand or dirt. Which means the joint itself has already been damaged. However it is generally something that progressively gets worse, say it starts happening but only when you make a sharp left or right turn. Now if it just started happening, you can definitely prolong the amount of time before it actually needs to be replace. I have gone almost a year from the time I first heard one of my CV axles clicking and when I actually replaced it. How I was able to do so was first by avoiding really dirty/dust roads or puddles. Also trying not to turn so sharp that it makes that clicking sound. Because that is the sound of the joint being damaged further. Oh yeah, I also made sure there was plenty of grease in the boot. I used a multipurpose grease made by Valvoline, and comes in a blue jar.

Check the "boot" for cracks and see if there is any loss of grease. The boot is the rubber housing around the CV Joint. If the boot is damaged, grease has escaped and the CV Joint is making noise, the CV joint must be replaced.

That depends which model it is. On older models CV-joints were moulded into the driveshaft. To be replaced they had to be removed using a press and then warmed to be able to replace them. On these models it is often better to replace the whole driveshaft. On newer models CV-joints are attached with clips and can be replaced more easily.

During an alignment job my shop melted my cv boot while heating the tie rod end for adustment. Because something is pressed on, they ordered the entire shaft. Mazda dealers would not sell them a boot and because their policy is to not farm out any work, ordering the shaft cost them more money than sending the car to Mazda to change the boot. This was the passenger side shaft. Hope this helps.

Don't bother, just replace the entire axle. Once the boot is damaged, the CV joint is contaminated and it will not last very long. It's just an exercise in futility to replace the boot, and the effort is almost as great as if you replaced the entire half-shaft axle.

To fit a new CV joint to a 1999 Renault Scenic, first, safely lift the vehicle and remove the wheel. Next, detach the drive shaft from the hub and pull it out of the transmission. Remove the old CV joint by loosening the retaining clip and slipping it off the drive shaft, then clean the shaft before installing the new joint. Finally, apply grease, secure the new joint in place, reinsert the drive shaft, and reassemble all components.
