What was education like in the 1920s?

The people (parents, teachers, administrators) in the education system followed the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle. Parents did not send their children to school, with baggy pants or short skirts. Shoes were shined , no sneakers. Teachers spent nearly all hours teaching, not filling out forms to satisfy the apparatchiks (russian word for lazy bureaucrats) on the local, state and federal level. In fact there was no federal level. The current Department of Education creates enough paper work to wipe out a million acres of woodlands per year. It has not created a higher level of education. Proof: many high-school graduates have to take remedial reading and writing courses when they enter college. Written tests were frequent and grading was not rigged to create a fictitious level of student performance to assure "funds" were received from the puppet masters at the federal level.

Why do they call the 1920's telephone the kitchen telephone?

The name says it all. Back then households often had their telephone wall mounted to the kitchen wall. The kitchen was often the busiest place in the house as well as the noisiest. It made sense to have the phone where you could hear it. If you were in the noisy kitchen and the phone was elsewhere you would miss a lot of calls. Back then there weren't voicemails, answering machines, or caller Id to check later.

What impact did President Harding have on lives during the 1920s and 1930s?

Harding was pretty much in tune with the times. If he had not been there, someone else with about the same views would have been President. The theme was isolationism in foreign policy and minimal regulation of business.

Prohibition was in effect, but Harding did not cause it although he did not try to repeal it.

Why did people buy stocks on the margin in the 1920s?

Same reason they do today....leverage.

Buying say $1,000 of stock that you believe is going up...and it does say 20% earns you $200.

On margin, the same $1,000 may get you 3 times as much stock, so the same events makes you $600 - or 60%, (minus a small interest and carrying expense). The numbers aren't quite right, but the theory is. The SEC won't allow you to borrow more than half the purchase price of the stock you're buying on margin. If you have a margin account with a $5000 maintenance margin (the amount of money you MUST leave in the account) and you have $15,000 in there, you have $10,000 of usable cash. You may then borrow up to $10,000 on margin. The reason for this rule is, of course, because buying stock on margin is one of the major factors in the Great Depression.

What was the price of the radio in the 1920s?

At first, it only cost a few dollars because you built it yourself-- in radio's very early days, the majority of people who had radios were hobbyists, and coming from amateur (ham) radio, they liked to build things. These early radios were not very attractive, but they got the job done. However, when radio expanded and became very popular in the mid 1920s, companies like RCA (Radio Corporation of America) and others mass-produced them and sold them at department stores. The prices varied. A basic, not very fancy model might cost about $15. But a beautiful radio set, situated in an attractive cabinet (something that looked like a nice piece of furniture), featuring the latest technological advances, might cost $120 or more.
