There are four ways to find a ratio.

2 There are normally tags or labels on the axle that have part number, gear ratio, and fluid requirement

One Gentlemen had a transfer case full of metal.

I figured you had bearing issue before I did the search. Which leads to the next question in my mind what kind of oil are you using and have you ever checked or changed it. My resources show the transfer case takes ATF.

Once you have it repaired I would suggest looking into a better ATF then you can purchase at Wal-Mart or Kragen Auto parts.

A differential divides torque between the two tires equally at all times while allowing for a difference in speed between the two wheels.

Do not confuse the ring and pinion for the differential. The differential is made up of the pinion gears (also called spider gears), the cross shaft, and side gears have splines that mate with the axle shaft splines.

Example, if you had a 4.11 gear ratio with a torque input of 100 foot pounds and 100 rpm's at the ring gear. Each tire would split 411 foot lbs equally while turning at 100 rpm's. If you were in a slight turn and the inside wheel turned at 80 rpm you would add the reduction in rpm to the other wheel and it would be turning at 120 rpm. Each wheel gets the same rpm when going straight and when one is turning slower the rpm's from that wheel always gets added to the faster wheel

Another example, if one wheel was spinning with the same inputs as above and one was not spinning. Each wheel is still dividing the torque evenly but the wheel that is spinning is getting all the rpm's and would be spinning at 200 rpm.

sounds like you have over filled the diff with lubricant drain lubricant and replace with proper rated oil and proper amount

I have a 1978 corvette and was curious too about the ratios.From what I found on the web they are 3.08:1 for an automatic and 3.36:1 for a manual transmission.

the electric servo and or the switch is bad.could be one or the other. A common problem if not used in some time.

We just purchased a rear axle and the cost was $300.00. That does not include repairing, just part.

If you will lay down under the front of the truck and look up over the skid plate towards the center of the differential but to the right a little you will see a plug that a 3/8 rachett end will fit in. Remove it and put finger into hole if you touch oil then its full if not add gear oil until it runs out.

Should have some kind of a synchronized solenoid to engage the front diff. go to a parts store to look at a wiring diagram to trace it down or stop in and ask about it at a dealer. they will usually help if they are not too busy. The above isn't entirely true. on a 1986 S-10 Blazer the front hubs are actuated via a vacuum system. Under the hood of the s-10 will be a black plastic ball. (A little bit bigger than a softball.) There should be a single vacuum line hooked to it. This is what causes the front hubs to lock.

At the moment, my research shows that the GT's come with 3.31 gears from factory. There is an option for Premium GT's with Manual transmissions to swap the 3.31's with 3.55's.

I know the manual trans is rated for better gas mileage, and had assumed that the auto's had different gearing. However, I've just found some information that discusses the specific ratios for each gear in each transmission. From that information, I gather that any gearing differences between the Auto and the Manual are caused by the transmission, not the rear end.

All Ford literature that I find indicates that the 6 bangers, 4.6s and Shelby's come with 3.31 gears.

This is a big question. About all you can do yourself is make sure you are running the correct type of fluid and the quantity is correct and clean. Our 91 Ford called for Mercon V and it shifted poorly when regular Mercon was substituted. Make sure it is the correct type, no exceptions here.

Aside from that, you'll probably need professional help at a shop.

On a late model vehicle the dealer can run the VIN number through their computer system and get the axle ratio from the build sheet.

You have to know three things, the transmission type, the transfer case type, The rear axle gear ratio. Also in some cases, the underdrive. Enter the information in the site linked below and you will get your answers.

It does affect overall ratio. The transmission ratios, the axle ratio, and tire size all figure into overall ratio.

The 1963 and earlier Tempests used a transaxle similar to the one used in the Chevy Corvair. The transmission and left and right rear axles are a single subassembly. What is unusual is that the Tempest's engine was in the front of the car and the transmission was in the rear. It was more common for rear engine cars, such as the VW Beetle, Porsche, and Corvair to use a transaxle.

It depends on the year and transmission type (4 spd, 5spd, 6spd) ... but here are some general guidelines: Most 1987-1997 F250 with either the Mazda or S5-42 ZF manual transmission require DEXRON/MERCON fluid. 1999-2007 models with the S5-47 5 spd or ZF S-650 6 spd manual transmission also calls for DEXRON/MERCON. If you were referring to an older 70s-80s model truck with 3 spd or 4 spd manual, it takes 80W (or 80W90 ... or 75W90) gear oil.
