Answer: Intermittent problems are very hard to diagnose. Your no start problem may be your fuel pump. Try to check it for pressure during the not start problem. Also, check for spark at the spark plugs. From what you described, your problem could be the coil module, the cam angle sensor or the crank angle sensor.

A partially clogged fuel filter can cause the fuel pump to work harder and in the end cause premature fuel pump failure. Due to how expensive it is to replace a fuel pump, I recommend you replace the fuel filter every 50,000 miles. Cheap insurance against pump failure.

If you hear it only at idle and sounds faint, it is your rocker shaft. They wear on the end and makes a slight ticking noise. Mine has done it for over 100k miles and no problems. I hope you have done reg maint and kept oil changed.

The IAT is integrated in the Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter. It's the coffee can in the front passenger side of the car. It's a brown connector and on a GS it should have 6 wires where as on a GST/GSX it has 7 wires.

You have to have an Allen wrench to hold the ball joint straight while turning the nut with a wrench. Once you get it loose a bit, then you can hold the ball joint still with a set of vise grips and remove the nut the rest of the way. It is good to let it soak with some penetrant oil first. Buy after market style links and they have a place for a wench on the ball joint so it is easier to hold than the stock type. Moog is a good replacement part.

The owner's manual for my '97 calls for ATF+2. I think it also says on the stick what type of fluid should be used. I'm pretty sure that when I had my transmission serviced they used ATF+4. I was told that the 4 replaced 2 + 3. It's been well over a year since I had it done and all seems fine.
