How do you know if you got a blown head gasket?
Several ways to deduce a blown gasket include higher-than ordinary oil pressure, coolant pressure/leaks, contaminated oil and/or antifreeze (does either resemble chocolate drink?) and cylinder compression test. Check for spark plug tips revealing white ash or gumming in the affected cylinders. Also white smoke from the exhaust, loss of coolant with no apparent leak, a white foamy substance on the underside of the oil fill cap, & miss on one or more cylinders.
How do you replace the water pump on a 1991 Ford Escort GT 1.8l?
THIS IS DETAILED for 1.8l DOHC
OK. I recently replaced the water pump on my 91 Escort GT and having never done one, i spent endless hours searching online for answers pin pointing the problems i ran into, making it very frustrating, and never found ANYTHING that was exactly the problem i was encountering. So if you are a novice DIY kind of person but have never tackled this before, i sure hope this helps you because i sure wish i could have had the detailed steps accessible w/o spending money on a Haynes or Chilton.
You will need a variety of tools to make the job simple:
Air Compressor capable of 150psi and impact gun capable 300+ft.lbs trq
1/4" drive ratchet and extensions short and long. 3/4" drive breaker bar
Pry bar
Sockets in metric 10,12,14,17,22
5/8 Spark plug socket
Open and closed ended wrenches in metric 10,12,14
Torque wrench that goes as low as 27-38 ft. lbs
At least 1-1/2 ton capable jack and jack stand/s
Pliers and/or Vice Grips
Telescopic mechanics mirror and magnet
Yellow fine tip Paint pen
Heres where you need to start:
Disconnect the battery
If it is a manual or auto transmission, put it in neutral, set the E-brake and place tire chalks behind the rear tires.
Jack up front passenger side of vehicle and place on Jack stand
Remove front passenger tire and plastic splash shielding from inner wheel well and across front bottom of vehicle
Drain coolant by loosening drain plug on bottom corner of the Radiator on the drivers side of vehicle. Make sure you have a deep enough drain pan and DO NOT do it if the car is still hot. When done draining, tighten plug back up.
Pull off the #1 cylinder spark plug wire and spark plug. This is the one closest to the cam gears.
Using the breaker bar and the 22mm socket, turn the motor over by hand at the crankshaft bolt rotating clockwise until #1 cylinder is at the top of its compression stoke, or until the notch in the crank pulley is at TDC (Top Dead Center). You can use the telescopic mirror to see the timing marks while turning over the motor. The long mark that lines up with the top of the sideways T indicates TDC.
Once you get it to TDC, begin to remove the upper timing cover off, which should be four 10mm bolts. Now some people say to remove the motor mount on the passenger side of the motor, which does make it much easier, but i did it with out doing so.
Loosen the three bolts holding the water pump pulley on, but don't pull them all the way out, just break them loose.
When looking down at the power steering pump from above, there are two 14mm bolt heads that look like they both act as pivoting points for the power steering pump, behind the pulley. Loosen the one to the left. Now crawl under car and using 17mm socket, loosen the adjusting nut right in between the power steering pump and AC pump. Then use the 12mm socket to back off the fine tuning adjusting bolt that threads through the back of the 17mm nut & bolt. Adjust power steering pump enough to get the serpentine belt off. If you plan on re-using the belts, make sure to mark the direction of rotation so you put them on the same way.
Using the 14mm socket and ratchet, crawl under vehicle and find the bottom Alternator bolt and break it loose, then loosen the top adjuster bolt and use the pry bar to release the tension on the alternator belt, removing belt.
Now that you have both serpentine belt and V belt off, you can finish removing the water pump pulley.
Once done removing water pump pulley, you can remove the crankshaft pulley. Using the breaker bar and 22mm socket again, keep tension on the crankshaft while breaking loose the four 10mm bolts surrounding the center crank bolt.
Make sure the crank is still at TDC. If it moved counter clockwise a few degrees, that's fine, just turn it back clockwise to TDC. If moved clockwise past TDC, use the breaker bar and crank it around one full revolution back to TDC.
Now you can get that Impact gun out and break loose that 22mm bolt. Once that's off, pull the crankshaft pulley and the timing belt inner guide plate. When you get it off, you can finish removing the middle and lower half of the timing cover.
Now that all the covers are off and the crankshaft pulley is out of the way, you should have a clear view of the water pump and timing belt pulleys. Using the 14mm socket, break loose the timing belt tensioning pulley which would be the one on the left. Make sure that on the camshaft gears, the timing notches line up with the arrows in the back shielding behind the cam gears, and that the "I" on the cam gear on the firewall side of the engine, and the "E" on the other cam gear also are pointing straight up and lined with the arrows. If you encounter what i encountered, instead of the "I" and "E" lining up with the timing arrows, you see an "I" and "I", just leave it, chances are Ford put the Exhaust cam gear on wrong.
Using a paint pen, mark on the timing belt on both cam sprockets the timing notches, and crank gear, the placement of the timing belt, ensuring correct replacement of timing belt if you are to reuse it. It would be wise to Replace the timing belt however since you are removing it anyways. Once done marking placement of the belt, Using the but end of the breaker bar, push on the tensioner pulley to where the tension is taken off of the timing belt and the spring is fully extended, then tighten the tensioner. Now remove the timing belt.
Next remove both Timing belt idler pulley and tensioner pulley.
Now remove the 10mm bolt holding the oil dipstick tube brace to the engine block. And if you can, remove the Oil dipstick tube its self out of the block. Chances are that it is in the block very good and will be very hard to get out. I tried all sorts of methods of getting it out, but didnt succeed, because it makes the job a WHOLE LOT easier out of the way.
Now before starting to take the water pump out, take the lower radiator hose off the bottom of the radiator and off of the water pump inlet tube that runs between the power steering pump and AC pump, draining any coolant trapped in the hose.
Now you can remove the two 12mm bolts holding the inlet pipe to the side of the water pump. If you couldn't get the Oil dipstick tube out, or decided not to try, well this is why it would be MUCH easier to have it out of the way. Those two bolts are a P.I.T.A. to get out (and In) with the tube in the way. there is also a coolant return hard line that runs into the side of the inlet tube that is just press fitted. Just twist and pull on the inlet pipe towards the passenger wheel well.
When you get done getting that out of the way, you can take all the bolts out of the water pump and get it out of there!
NOW YOU ARE HALF WAY DONE!!
From here on out, putting everything back together should be done in the exact way it all came out, only in reverse.
When i comes to putting the timing belt on, make sure you start with the crank first and route it up around the pulleys and to the cam gears, that way you can turn the cams if any to line up with the marks on the timing belt, ensuring it all goes back together the way it came off. Torque bolts to 27-38ft.lbs but don't strip out the threads, you are dealing with aluminum here.
Once its back on and the timing belt tensioner pulley is loose but the spring is still keeping tension on it, hand crank the motor over in Clockwise direction 3 full revolutions and stop at TDC.
Go ahead and tighten timing belt tension to where there is between .35-.45" (8.9-11mm) deflection between the cam shaft sprockets and torque bolts to 37-38ft. lbs.
Finish putting everything back together reverse of how it came out, fill the system up with new Coolant/Antifreeze and you are ready to start the car up and drive!
Hope this was helpful. I know now this is the most descriptive step by step procedure online for this job on this car and couldn't even find anything this descriptive on the Ford Escort Owners Association(FEOA.com) forums.
Good luck!
What size is the gas tank in a 1998 ford escort?
Evidentally 12.7 U.S. Gallons: http://www.storesonline.com/site/823208/product/F-F58A Here's the clincher though; you get a "low fuel" light way early then. I thought I was empty running that light for awhile and it only took 10 gallons. So I guess there's a lil reserve.
How do you replace the hood ornament?
After you buy the new ornament, to take the old one out, get a small Phillips head screwdriver and a big, soft rag. Basically, you just use the rag to keep from scratching the paint on the hood as you work the screwdriver (may be easier with two) underneath the ornament, and slowly work it up enough that it just pops right out.
The ornament has two posts at the 3 and 9 o'clock position. Work evenly at these two points. An alternative to the screwdriver and rag are silicon tools that won't scratch the paint. These can be purchased on BavAuto.com
A PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER?
How do you remove the steering wheel off your r reg 1998 ford escort?
disconnect the battery and wait 5 minutes. Remove the air bag and disconnect any electrical connectors to the horn buttons or cruise control switches. Remove the 15mm bolt that holds the steering whell to the steering shaft. Partially reinstall the 15mm bolt and use a 2 jaw puller at the 12 oclock and 6 oclock positions to press against the bolt and break the wheel loose from the shaft. Once it has broken free, you can remove the puller and the 15mm blt and the wheel should lift off.
Car over heated after you lost power steering and battery light came on?
You "threw" a belt. The accessory belt came off and there was probably a reason for it. Check the accessories to see if one of them is frozen up such as the alternator, power steering pump, water pump and any idler pulleys. It is also possible the neighborhood cat was keeping warm in there, fatal mistake on his part.
No, typically a Ford Escort would not be considered a fast car. However, Ford does offer a sportier GT model and any car can be modified to be fast if so desired.
Where can one get head bolts for a 1992 escort gt 1.8L they are no longer made?
Ford Escort GT 1.8L DOHC cylinder head bolts, quickly move to the trash heap and retrieve them. Why? Because there is probably nothing wrong with them!
Some engine designs require that the cylinder head bolts be torqued to yield (stretched). Once a bolt or stud bolt has been tensioned to that point it must not be reused. You can identify those engines by checking the torque specifications. A "torque to yield" specification calls for the bolt to be torqued to so many ft-lb, then the bolt is turned an additional angle (number of degrees or partial turns) which stretches the bolt.
Lucky for you the Ford Escort GT 1.8L DOHC cylinder head bolt specification does not call for stretching the bolts. There is no guarantee than some goofy who worked on the engine before you did not stretch the bolts by over tourquing them, but it is unlikely.
My conclusion, clean the bolts real good, clean them with motor oil and reinstall them.
Is the key that works the door locks the same key that will work the ignition switch?
-However, I have a 1990 Ford Bronco II Eddie Bauer, and I have two keys which will only open and lock the doors, and two keys that will only operate the ignition.
Why does the fuel cut out light on the dash in a 1994 ford escort?
I share your pain when it comes to the fuel cutout light.. for me I came to the conclusion the computer was out of loop from all the stereo wiring that was done in the past.. this includes my idle sensor, oxygen sensor, ect... for cure your problem I would look to an expert to have your computer reset seems it cant be done without specialty equiptment..
Can a TH-350 transmission operate without a kick down cable?
yes with out the cable connected properly and you are going up a hill it will not go into passing gear. or downshift when needed.
How do you know if my head gasket is working properly?
You will get proper combustion in all pistons. Also a bad head gasket could blow steam out the tail pipe even after the car is warmed up. Another symptom of a blown head gasket is bubbles forming in the radiator tank. The head gasket provides the seal between the cylinder head and the block. It prevents water and oil from getting into the cylinders, and into each others channels. If the engine is smoking badly, or steam is coming out the tail pipe in large amounts, the head gasket may be shot. If you have white foam in the oil, that is evidence that water is getting into the oil system, and, if there is an oily sludge showing up in the coolant, than oil is getting into the water system.
A compression test can reveal if a head gasket is leaking, which can be done quickly by a mechanic. A car may run with a blown head gasket, but usually not very well.
Can you do a do it your self wheel alignment on a 1997 ford escort?
Sort of. Changing the alignment is no biggie, but w/o special measuring gear it's really hard to know if you've made it better or worse.
How do you fix the cigarette lighter in a ford escort?
Before you replace the whole lighter, check the fuse. If it is not located in the fuse box, it may be just outside the fuse box under the dash.
How to set camshaft to crankshaft timing 89 ford escort?
If it is a 1.9,, then you point the arrow on the cam pulley up, at the dot on the head, and the crank pulley notch up, at the matching notch above it, and put on the belt. The tensioner is a bit of a hassle.
You may want to check the fuel filter.
these cars also have a fuel pump relay, I have the same problem with my car. have you gotten yours fixed yet? I'm just getting started on mine.
Your car suddenly died while you were driving down the road but no lights came on what is wrong?
your alternator is dead.
For each accessory there will be a locking bolt and a pivot bolt or nut. After they are loosened move the component as needed to tighten or loosen the belt. Many accessories have a square hole designed to accept a 1/2 inch square drive breaker bar. the bar can be used to lever the accessory and tighten the drivebelt ( fan belt ) Others have a cast lug, use an wrench for the same effect, but careful of those knuckles!
How do you take off the the steering wheel from an 83 Chevrolet Pick-up?
Pull the center horn mechanism, remove the single large nut in the center, connect a steering wheel puller to the 3 (sometimes 2) threaded holes around the center of the steering wheel splined hub and use the puller to loosen the wheel. It won't come off without a puller. Don't even bother to try.
What happens if you use the incorrect car battery?
In reality, the only real significant ELECTRICAL difference is that some of the older batteries are 6 volts and more modern automotive batteries are 12 volts. There are, of course, quite a few electric vehicles that use 24, 36 or often higher voltage.
Other than that, most 12 volt automotive batteries will function in most vehicles that take 12 volts.
The important part is that you somehow make the battery FIT, and that it has sufficient amperage to operate the starter.
Naturally, the battery that has been engineered for the vehicle will function best, but if you use a battery that's a different size, it will work.
How do you replace a broken valve seat on a 1998 Ford Escort?
Valve work can be a tricky aspect of engine rebuilding for several reasons. For one, it requires absolute precision. Close enough, is not good enough. If tolerances aren’t exact and the valvetrain geometry isn’t right on, you’re going to have problems. Guaranteed. Any GOOD automotive machine shop should be able to machine the block and install a replacement seat. All of this much cheaper than you buying the equipment to do it yourself.
Why wont your 1987 escort start?
It depends, could be a number of things... Does the engine begin to turn over, does it make any noise, or does it do nothing at all when you turn the key? Not knowing any of these, I'll list a few things that may or may not help... If there is nothing at all when you turn the key over and the car has a manual transmission, try fullyengaging the clutch, if it is either manual or automatic transmission, and it makes no noise at all, you may want to check the battery first to make certain that it is connected properly, if it is, check the battery itself to make sure that it is functioning, you could try jump starting... Also you may have a malfunctioning ignition switch, which is located behind the steering wheel under the shroud that covers the steering column on the right side and just behind the ignition cylinder (the thing you put the key in). If I had more information from your question, I could likely be more helpful... Hope this helped.
Where is the starter located on a 1993 ford escort gt?
Need to raise the vehicle because the starter is on the back side of the engine under the intake plenum and can only be accessed from under the car.
