The starter relay is on the driver's side fender behind the battery.

The fuse box is located on the driver's side dash between the door and the dash. As for what fuse goes where there should be a cover explaining this. If not go to the junk yard I am almost sure you can find one there.

Possible vapor lock. Caused when a car overheats, sometimes due to water pump not working, belt to pump broken, thermostat inoperative, and/or low or no antifreeze in the system. Does your check engine light or temperature gauge give an alert? The vehicle might be designed to shut itself off, to avoid major damage. Have the above issues checked out. Good Luck

most likely one of the pulleys (tension or idler) however, it could be alternator, power steering, ac etc.... take a long screw driver or my favorite a piece of wood(sound travels well through it. broken mop or broom handle is good. place one end near the sound and track it down. sounds like a minor item. dont think the motor is going bad. let me know how it turns out.

To do that would compromise your safety, and of anyone else in the area, if you have a wreck. The purpose is to cutoff the fuel pump if you have a wreck, so fuel is not spewing out all over the pavement. On an Escort, it also locks the automatic seat belts down, if you have them, so you stay in the seat if the door flies open during a wreck.

It's on the tunnel housing at the end of the console. Take the console out to get to it.

Once you've found it disconnect the elctrical connection and remove it. Installation is the opposite of the removal.

Isn't the fuel pump shut off switch ( inertia switch ) button supposed to be DOWN

If the button has popped UP then no power is going to the electric fuel pump

check the fuse, it should be linked to other devices in the vehicle if you've noticed other components (radio, interior lights, etc.) not working. if the gauge is pegged in the super high or low position and the fuse is good, pull apart dash and check voltage reading at gauge wiring (you need voltage values from ford to determine if the gauge is out or if it is indeed telling you the right reading). If the gauge wiring checks out, the sender unit on your fuel pump went out and it is integral with the fuel pump itself. Ala, time to replace the fuel pump. Good luck.

I had a similar problem. Check your intake tube for cracks. If there is a crack it the motor will suck in more air and that throws off the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

No you cannot. The motor will not bolt up the same to the body. I tried using a motor from a four door into a two door and did not work. Those seat belts are just a big pain in the butt anyways. When I locked both of mine on my 95 LX Sport I left them alone.

Actually, you can do it without grinding the bolts -

remove the lower trim panel (below the steering wheel)

insert your ignition key and turn it to acc

on the bottom of the ignition switch, there is a button you have to push in and you can then remove the switch

I have a 97 escort lx wagon and recently I got the #4 cly. misfire after replacing the wires and plug's misfired again causing the check engine light to come on,had it checked at the auto parts store and got the #4 cyl. misfire.replaced the dist. cap.still had problems,took it to Bob Lees auto repair and the engine went south on a test drive.

I was looking at the 1996 Ford Escort Owner Guide and it doesn't show

anything about it having a low fuel warning light ( or a check " gage " light )

The 1989 Ford Escort is computer controlled and therefore has no points or gap.
