Why a 2003 Volkswagen Passat wagon rear lights turn on?
You probably have the problem with the faulty brake pedal switch - this was a recall item. Your cruise control may not work either. There is a switch that when you press the brake it triggers the rear lights and also tells the cruise control to turn off temporarily. This became faulty on mine over a period of months where the cruise would sometimes work, others not. then the rear brakes kept staying on. Should be fixed for free as it was a recall. **This happened to me today, with the dealership closed for the weekend I was worried the battery would die before I could get it fixed. I tried pulling back on the brake pedal as much as I could with my hand and it turned the lights off.**
What damage is done by over filling a motor with oil?
Depends on how long you ran the engine after over filling the crankcase with oil. If you did not run it, remove the drain plug for a moment and let some oil drain out to the correct level, No Harm!
If you olny ran the enging briefly, drain some oil out, again no harm.
If you ran the enging for a longer period of time, the crank shaft and the connecting rods could have been dipping into the oil in the oil pan and whipping it into a froth. You should be able to see this by looking at the oil on the dipstick. If the oil looks brown and frothy you may have caused serious damage to the connecting rod or main bearings on the crank shaft. (Oil is a great lubricant, but the air whipped into the oil is no lubricant at all!)
If the last case is yours, drain all the oil and froth out of the crankcase, change the oil and filter again, drive the car for about 100 miles, and change oil and filter again. If you damaged the bearings you will see the shavings of metal in the oil when you drain the crankcase. It will look like very fine grains of shiney sand in the bottom of the pan you drained the oil into, so be sure to use a very clean pan to drin the oil into.
If the bearins are damaged severly, you will hear a rapid ticking noise when the engine is running, that will increase in tempo with the engine speed.

How do you disable the Ford Expedition cruise control?
Pull the fuse, if that doesn't affect your speedometer.
I had mine disconnected at the dealer, you don't even have to leave it there and you didn't need an appointment.
But if you want to do it yourself heres what he did. When you are looking at the engine on the Right (drivers) side the cruise control is a black thing(male) plugged into an orange (female)plug located right in front of the master cylinder (big black roundish thing) then he taped it each piece with electrical tape so that water wouldn't get in. Good Luck.
There was a safety recall from Ford on this item, it gets hot and could cause a fire so go to the dealer to have them replace the part for you.

I have this exact same SUV - Here's how to do it: You must first have the preset code that came from the factory. It is a five digit code. If you don't have it, you can call a Ford dealership and give them your VIN# then they can tell you what the code is. If you have the factory code or once you get it, you enter the code then press the 1/2 button within 5 seconds of entering the factory code. Once you press the 1/2 button then enter your own 5 digit code. You must press the numbers within 5 seconds of each other. Once you do that you're done. Then when you enter your code it unlocks the front drivers door. To unlock all the doors enter your 5 digit code and then press the 3/4 button. To lock the doors using the key pad all you have to do is press the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons at the same time. You don't need to enter your personal code to lock the doors.
Hope this helps,

Loose gear shifter on 1998 Ford Expedition?
On my 2000 expedition it was a loose bolt. this bolt aligns the gear shifter with the transmission position. it is located under the dash, just follow the column, it will be on top of the column with a torx bolt (i believe it was a torx) anyways if you jiggle the gear shifter while looking up you will see where they connect together with a bracket with the culprit bolt.
Note, make sure you use some locktite or you will have the same problem over and over again.
sorry if this seems a little vage, it's late and just seen this question ;)

How can you find where you have a leak in your 1998 expedition that is getting your gem module wet?
What is a Generic Electronic Module? The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) is found on Ford vehicles and is basically a Body Control Computer. It controls many of the following functions on most Ford vehicles: * Warning chimes and warning lamps * One-touch down driver's side window * Daytime Running Lamps * Heated rear window * Windshield washers and wipers * Battery saver * Remote keyless entry * Illuminated entry with remote keyless entry * Interior lighting * Perimeter anti-theft * Four-wheel drive The GEM is bolted to the back of the fuse box.
Sometimes though the fuse box gets water in it and causes the same problems too. _________________________________________________________________________ On my old 1998 Ford Expedition XLT it was the wind shield. I had to get the wind shield reinstall with extra sealer. Fix the problem.

Why would a 1997 Jeep Wrangler have a random cylinder misfire?
if it is not consistent IE not JUST the #4 cylinder, I would look at the distributor (button, rotor, etc), Ignition coil and the wire connecting them
Also, check the fuel injection, if there isn't enough fuel to drive the cylinder it just sits there (this is also a common reason people fail their e-checks). If the check engine light is on it should kick out a 200 code for the above problem.
If the code is just a 300, I would start checking the distributor and wires as said before, and of course make sure the plugs aren't cracked. If none of that helps, it is time to take the head off and check the seals around the offending cylinder. I hope that is helpful to you! -Katrina

You have to remove the 2 bolts from the floor and 2 from high on each side of the seat backs. The tricky part is then you have to put the armrest down and look for 2 small plastic caps covering bolts that are sometimes tough to get out. Then the seat should come out.

What does a car starter look like?
It will be a large cylindrical object (about 4-6 inches diameter by 6-8 inches long) with another small cylinder attached to it. It is typically located low down on the driver's side rear of the engine block. It is actually mounted on the transmission bellhousing and the positive (+) battery cable should lead directly to it.
Will your car shut off if the fuel relay is bad?
The vehicle may shut off during use if the fuel pump relay goes bad. But it could go bad and the relay shuts off, or the relay gets stuck open (which does not happen often). if the relay gets stuck open then most likely the fuel pump will not shut off (unless the relay is removed) which is dangerous. Also it all completely depends on the wiring of the car. Also, if the fuel pump relay goes bad and shuts off, the vehicle may not start back up until it is replaced.
