You can't. I had the exact same problem with my 96 grand am, and after changing the ignition and also the instrument cluster was the only way to get it to work. I would try to replace the ignition first cause it could not be reading the key properly and if it still gives you problems then your whole control panel will need to be changed. Either way its going to cost a pretty penny.

Actually you can. This is a common problem with grand am's. If the car does not start on the first try...the anti theft system will kick in and the car won't start for 10 minutes. Don't try to start until the security light stops flashing. I finally disabled mine by cutting the yellow wire behind the radio. If you do this the security light will always be on (steady) but at least the car will start every time.

The engine computer is also the regulator.

You must run speaker wires directly to speakers from the head unit, tedious but hey what are you gonna do? No need to bypass hook "amp turn on" blue and white wire to ignition or power wire, worked for me. NO You don,t need to run new wires, you have to trace them down,,, not that diffulcult , Take out the amp, and connect the input and out put wires, don,t hook-up the red with white stripe, this is the 12 volt power to the amp. This may sound kind of silly, but are you sure there is indeed a light in there? My Sunfire is older than yours, so this might not be relative, but, as dumb as I am, when I first bought the car, I kept looking at that darned console, hoping to see some indication of what gear I was in. I took me a while to realize that the shifter postions are just painted on the console, and that the only "real" gear indication was that lovely lighted display on the dash! On the passengers side of the trans about even with the front of the door fan shaped switch held on by two bolts.

I suggest taking it apart and cleaning it before you think about replacing.

The switch is nearly $300

To remove, flatten out the retaining washer side, remove large nut, remove smaller ( 14mm ) bolt on the adjustment side.

cleaning is easy, 6 screws in back, pull apart, clean out all that old grease, pay special attention to the two contacts on the sweeper arm, they should move in and out easily as they have springs underneath and are the man contacts, apply new di-electric grease and reassemble.

reassemble and align before tightening, easiest way is to put trans selector in R and move switch until reverse lights come on.

That jeep could have either a Dana 35 in the rear or a Chrysler 8.25. The best way to tell the difference is if the U bolts are 3 inches wide than it is an 8.25, if there smaller than it's a Dana 35. Most have the Dana 35C with C-Clip. Some do use the Chrysler 8.25 design. Look on the rear differential housing (the "Pumpkin"), and there should be some markings. If it's a Dana, you should see "35C" printed on either side of the pumpkin.

Sounds like you may have to replace your heater core, they are located under the dash. If yours has a small leak (starting to go bad) you will have to replace it or you will end up with a major leak and no ac/heat and will fry your engine. Check with your mechanic on this one. Maybe.... but if it is just condensation you can locate the drain tube on ther passenger side firewall and stick a piece of wire up it until the water runs out. Most of the time dust and leaves will block the drain and cause the water to leak out onto the floor.
