ON MY 2.2 4CYLINDER ( 1999 ) YOU HAVE TO PULL THE TIMING CHAIN COVER TO SEE THE " TIMING MARKS " . ON THE CRANK SPROCKET IT IS A PUNCH MARK.....ON THE CAM SPROCKET IT IS A SMALL HOLE IN THE SPROCKET . BOTH MUST LINE UP WITH TABS ON THE CHAIN TENSIONER. THE REST OF THE TIMING IS DONE BY CRANK & CAM SENSORS AND THE COMPUTER.

I had this issue just a few months ago. Your clutch is going out. I had the flywheel and slave cylinder replaced on my '96 Protege (stick-shift) to fix it.

A friend had a Mazda Eunos with the ''Miller Cycle'' engine which would randomly die while driving (almost like somebody turned the key off). It turned out to be that there is a metal fuel filter in the fuel tank itself which was completely blocked with what looked like mud. You should replace the rubber plug with a steel Dorman cup plug PN# 555-108 or Dana PN#219-3052. You will need 3 plugs. These trannies often melt down due to the oil loss caused by these plugs. Many owners have went with synthetic transmission fluid hoping to extend the life of the transmission. Synthetic fluid handles high temperatures and pressures better then conventional fluids. I am 99% sure your transmission uses ATF fluid. Check with your local Ford dealer or look in your owner's manual to be 100% sure. The hydraulic clutch, slave cylinder/throwout bearing is another item you should pay close attention to. After time, the slave cylinder fails to release the clutch completely. If you are having trouble shifting into 1st and reverse while stationary or if your truck creeps forward with the clutch pedal depressed the slave cylinder/throwout bearing is probably at fault. Unfortunately there is no easy fix here as the transmission must be removed to replace the combination slave cylinder and throwout bearing.

You need Genuine Mazda 5W 30 Non synthetic Mineral Oil. Nothing else.

There is a slave cylinder on the transmission. Bleed it as you would the brakes. One man method. Get a container, cup, bottle,and put enough brake fluid in it to cover the end of a hose. open the bleeder screw and place the hose over it. Vacumn hose that fits and then just pump the clutch pedel. Slowly 3-4 pumps should do it, TIghten bleeder screw and you are done.

Where is the smoke coming from? If it's the engine you may have bad valve covers or something is burning up from under the hood. Check the source and check it fast. If it comes from the tailpipe you may have a catalytic converter problem.

You can use the end of the tire iron to remove the lug bolts off a 1999 Mazda Protege DX.

Mine were in the glove compartment, in a box labelled "spare spark plugs".

Yes, but you will have to have special very low profile tires put on the rims or they won't fit into the fender wells. Also , ask your garage to check things like the clearance of the shocks/struts etc BEFORE you spend a lot of money on these tires/rims. Most tire shops should have charts to tell them exactly what the biggest rim/tire combo will fit a certain vehicle. Chuck
