Mercury Topaz

This is a strut suspension. You have to remove the complete strut. Then you will need a spring compressor to release the coil spring. From there the shock can be changed. It would be cheaper to take the car to someone and have it done as the tool's needed will cost you.

In the glove box of my topaz "1993", there is a list of the fuses. Also the fuses are under the steering wheel. YOu have to get down on the ground with the door open and poke your head in sideways and look up at them. I hope I helped.

This will depend on the year...if you have one of the earlier cars with a "conventionally" styled dash, you'll have to take the dash or parts of it off. If you have one of the newer ones with the knob sticking out the side of the gauge cluster, you can pull the controls out of the dash. Grasp the entire switch (both the selector knob and the labeled part) with your hand, and slowly but firmly pull it away from the dash. It may make a cracking noise while doing this, but this is the switch clips and not anything you need to worry about. Once it comes out, there will be a wire harness connected to it...pull enough of this out so it does not fall back into the dash, and disconnect the switch from it. PLEASE BE CAREFUL, THIS CIRCUIT STILL CARRIES POWER WHEN THE KEY IS OFF. Then, connect the new switch and pop it back into the hole...it should fit nice and tight, but if it is a little loose you may want to consider a small amount of hot glue behind the switch to hold it in. On and '89 I believe it's #17. Iknow your's is a different year. If you have a manual it is in there though. If that doesn't work, (fuse not blown or doesn't correct it), check the connection of the plug at the fan. Still doesn't work, follow the wiring up to the next plug, it will be up near the right of th ebrake fluid resivor. Clean what connectins you can and try that. Still doesn't work, take the plug off the fan motor again and make a pair of jumper wires long enough to reach from there ot the battery. You'll need a couple spade receiver type connectors. put them on the motor and touch the hot & neg wires to the battery and see if the fan starts keep arms, fingers and stuff out of the way of the fan. I had this problem and messed with it & messed with it until I found the corroded connection at the plug near the brake fluid resivor. messed with thte thing for almost 2 hours before I found it. good luck.

I can think of a couple possibilities: The distributor may have a crack that is allowing moisture in and causes the spark to jump to ground. You may have a crack in the high voltage wire that goes from the coil to the distributor or your carburater de-icer pickup may not be in place and when the temperature is cool and humid you could be building up an ice ball around the fuel inlet.

The 1993 Mercury manual transmission linkage will have adjustment nuts on each end of the linkage. Turning the adjustment nuts will move the linkage back in forth.

I assume that you have a 2.3L. Then you use a 3/8 drive rachette that will fit into a square slot on the tensioner. There is not much room, but the ratchette alone will fit and when you turn the ratchette, sometimes very hard to move, the tensioner will release, while holding the tensioner with one hand, remove the belt, and when ready to install the new one, after you wiggle it around the pulleys, do the same thing on the tensioner and slip the belt on. Just check to make sure the belt is on all pulleys properly. Not really a huge job. Look on the top back side for the square slot. Good luck.

If it isn't as simple as pulling the door open then there should be a button inside the glove box that you will need to push. If that doesn't work anymore then inside the trunk there should be a pull handle to release it as well. If the button doesn't work and you aren't afraid of people stealing your gas then i would suggest once you have it open, remove the tab that latches it closed. This will make it easier to open from then on... Simply open it from the outside.

It is probably mounted in a box over by the air cleaner.

If you do not have the proper tool's, then it is really best to take the car to your local garage. This is a specific job.

This car came from the factory with R12 Freon installed. There is no substitute for R12, per sey. R12 is no longer produced, and if you find any old stock it is extremely expensive. As you need to add refrigerant, this indicates you have a leak. If you have a leak, it is illegal to add refrigerant without repairing the leak. As you do not have the knowledge or tools to accomplish this, take your car to a A/C shop and have them repair the leak. Then have them convert this system over to R134a and charge the system properly. This will be far cheaper than adding R12 even if you can find some. You will come out money ahead and with the leak repaired and system charged.

You will be able to remove this from under the car. You have to slack the belt first, there is a long adjustable bolt that releases the tension on the belt.

Check the wire cnx. also good to replace the temp sensor for the fan. Just bypass the sensor to see if the fan does work first.

If you have one installed, on the 2.3 L engine, it would be in the back of the engine, looking at the engine from the front of the car. Its in the frost plug.

It originally came with green coolant. It is critical that you know what kind of antifreeze your car takes. There are 2 general kinds. Long life and traditional Green coolant. The sensors base data on the correct chemical composition of the one that was originally installed in it. Therefore adding wrong one may cause the ecm to adjust the fuel mixture incorrectly or cause sensor damage. Some vehicles require different long life coolants- GM has Dex-cool, Ford just came out with another, Honda has their own. If the concentration is too great or too weak, it will not work correct. The original coolant in that car was "green coolant". This old style antifreeze should never be mixed with the newer long life coolant, unless it is a "universal" or "global" coolant that is supposedly compatible with both. The coolant capacity is in your owners manual, usually in the "servicing your vehicle" section. And as for the color. Read the temp ratings on the antifreeze bottles, and use whichever you need according to your climate. Be sure to keep in mind the difference between pure antifreeze, and prediluted (50/50 or half water, half antifreeze).

It means you need to read the owner's manual.

I believe that it is in the trunk left side behind the cardboard panel. Should be a sticker there indicating this.

This is the pull out switch. Disconnect the battery pos. side is good. Then remove the panel under the lights, under and behind the pull out switch, you will feel the back side of the switch, disconnect the wire harness. There is a little button to press as you pull the switch all the way out, find that little button and press it. The switch will then come all the way out. Remove the old switch, small nut on the outside to remove, then it just pop's out. Install the new, and just push the rod in, it will lock by itself. Connect battery and check it out.

1987, if early edition most likely carb. Spark plug gap should be 0.044. The change was in 1989 going to 0.054 inch. If you ever have a problem that the car just stalls, and will re-start several minutes later, and happens often or once in awhile, change the module on the firewall, sort of like a silver box with 1 wire harness plugged into it. They have a tendency to short out. good luck.

The spark plug wires fire in the 1, 3, 4, 2 order on the 1991 Mercury Topaz GS 2.3 engine. This is the most common engine type for this vehicle.Ê
