I had this problem on my 99 Alero and I had to take it to the dealer for a $520 repair. I researched this issue before taking mine to repair and all i found was the same answer. This is the best option you have to be rid of this annoying problem... Here is a step-by-step procedure:
Pry up the plastic molding from around the Radio/HeaterAC controller and from around the Gear Shifter. Detach the HeaterAC module from the molding by removing the four 7-mm hex bolts from the back side. Take out the 3 7-mm hex bolts to loosen the Radio. Put key in ignition & turn to "On" position, apply brake, and shift into "drive" or lower gear. Turn HeaterAC module to the left, sideways orientation, and pull out the Radio. Disconnect main wiring harness from back center of Radio if there is not enough slack to take the Radio out past the plastic molding. Leave the antenna connected. Look inside and to the left at the back of the Ignition Cylinder assembly. Locate the THIN YELLOW WIRE which is bundled alongside the thin white and the thin black wire. You may have to stick you hand in and fish a bit to grab this "Thin wire Trio". DO NOT mess with the main rear/downward ignition wiring harnesses (1 of which contains a Thick Yellow Wire - leave it alone).
Isolate the THIN YELLOW WIRE from the 2 others. As a precaution, RECONNECT the MAIN RADIO WIRE HARNESS, and let the Radio hang to the right side. Put the key in the ignition, and put the car back in PARK. START THE CAR. CUT THE THIN YELLOW WIRE with the car running. Tape both ends of the cut wire. Place black electrical tape over the "Security" light (less annoying). Turn off the car engine. Disconnect the Radio main wire harness to Re-Install the Radio, if necessary. You may need to crawl under the passenger-side dash to push the main wire harness back into the radio while holding the Radio from the front. The rest of the installation is the reverse of removal. YOUR LIFE JUST GOT A LOT BETTER if you want to keep driving this car !!

try boring out your cylinders (take to the shop dont try it yourself if you dont know what your doing you will mess it up and damaging your engine for good), put bigger pistons and piston rings, put you a decent exhaust system, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to put a cold air intake either, get you an after market ecu chip, get you a lighter stronger crank shaft and drive shaft, and oh yeah dont forget to get you a nice set of brakes either, all those mods you'll need to slow that care down faster, i have a 98 and im in the process of doing all those

*Update: there is now a do it yourself device available at your major national chain parts stores, made by DesignTech (ph#800-337-4468), that will allow you to bypass GM security systems such as VATS, P.A.T.S., Passlock, Passlock II, Pass-KeyIII, Saturn, Securlock, & Transponder anti-theft systems, as well. So, if your security light is on at the dash and your car just won't start though you can hear the starter turning, it is because the fuel pump has been disabled by the passlock security system, the device previously mentioned sales for around thirty bucks but it must be installed by wiring into the steering column at the key switch area (detailed instructions are included).
You may be able to jump the security system by having someone turn the key while you pull out and push in the starter relay continually until the motor starts, but this will only temporarily help you, the real solution is a bypass device.
You can also take the VIN number to a dealership and they can cut a key off the VIN for you that will work with the security system for that vehicle. This should cost you about the same as the bypass system sold at the auto parts stores and will be less labor intensive.

Just about all GM cars have a Vats theft system in stalled on them. The little button on your ignition key (the black plastic tab/button with a silver pin is a resistor. when you put the key in ignition this resistor is checked for the correct resistonce (there are 15 different ones) Any way if there is dirt on key or inside the igniton switch the Vats system thinks your tru to steal your car. It resets after the three minents. The key seating in the switch for these 3 mins will probly make enought contact to read the risitor correctry. All you have to do is spray some contact cleaner on key and into the igntion key hole. some times just some WD 40 will clean it enought. Hope this helps, Ben Parker, San Jose,Ca. Invariably when I needed to go somewhere or was in a hurry it would cut out and wouldn't start, or I had to wait 7-8 minutes for the security light to stop blinking. Just this last week the solution came! First off, if you turn on the key and if the lights on the dash lights don't go on, wait until they do. When they go on, if the security light is blinking, wait until it stops. Then wait until the bell stops ringing. Wait until the 'groaning' sound stops. Wait a few seconds more. I just replaced the passenger side fog light bulb on a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora. There may be an easier method but I was unable to find any information in the owner's manual or on the internet that seemed pertinent. First I raised the front of the car using ramps. Then from underneath the vehicle I removed three plastic push thru fasteners (two front of the wheel and one into the frame). The push thru fasterners are removed by pulling out the center of the fastener, thus allowing the exterior of the fastner to easily slide out without damaging the fastner. With the fasteners removed the right portion of the large horizontal plastic shield could be gently bent out and down giving access to the rear of the fog light. Next I removed the push on (with a single catch) electrical connection. Next the bulb was rotated which released it from the holder. Installation was the reverse procedure although I was careful not to touch the glass portion of the replacement bulb with my bare fingers.
