Pontiac Grand Am

Hi i have a 1996 pontiac grand am se and i started to have problems at around 180,000 miles, i had to change the water pump and the alternator, if i have to cange 2 more things ill do it other wise i am not putting anymore money into it. So anyways i am thinking that at least for this year of car and type, i should get to 220,000 miles, im thinking ill have to change the head gasket soon, but i hope it will take me a few more thousand miles. You need a special tool called a Serpentine Belt Tool. In Sears it’s the KD Tools Geared Serpentine Belt Tool Sears item #00947098000 Mfr. model #3680. The key to replacing the belt is pulling down the tension wheel enough so that you can lift the belt around it. The problem with standard tools is that there’s no room to angle a conventional tool in. When assembled the belt tool forms an angle that is just right for the job. Also, when you’re ready to remount the belt feed the belt around all the wheels except the idler pulley. Pull down the tension wheel belt tool and slide the belt over the idler pulley and you’re done. Then keep the belt tool the back of your van because every time you hit a puddle you will have to do the whole thing over again. – Mike Snodderly, USAF retired

you never want to completly empty your resevoir. air bubbles will get in your brake lines and will make it super hard to stop. you should just add fluid. if you really do want to change it all out then you need to disconnect the brake line at one or all the tires and pump the brakes until its all out. but when you go to put more in then you will need to bleed the lines for any air bubbles which is a bigger project then when you started.

If you are talking about just the bulb you need to twist the socket counterclockwise from the back of the housing and then pull the bulb out of the socket. If you're talking about the whole housing then you need to be careful when you're replacing it be careful not to break the mounting clips on the bottom.

Remove the instrument panel,take cover off on the front of the lock cylinder there are two 10mm bolts that mount it & remove it through the hole were the cluster sits..GM tech...

In a 1987 it's under the steering column, to the left. Hope it's the same for the 1988.

It is your choice. If you want the Traction Control to be activated then I would just leave it on. I never turn mine off.

there is switch located next to the dimmer switch and that is the key to your problems

The flasher unit is up under the dashboard behind the fuse panel. It can be reached through a small trap door under and a little left of the steering column that just fits an average sized arm. If you reach way up behind the fuse panel you will feel the flasher unit in a clip. Pull straight up and the flasher and wiring will come free and can be brouught out through the trap door for replacement. Hope this helps.

the intermittent clicking sound, it is dirty contacts in your signal selector switch. Remove the combination switch from your steering column, spray some electrical contact cleaner on the contact points and viola! You're done. The question you ask is too involved for a proper answer. You need to go to a car parts store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library.

Have you checked the fuses? (Under the steering wheel, the little box with lots of little colored rectangles with numbers on them...) It's always best to start with the basics. * On my Plynouth Grand Voyager when the instruments went out the abs light came on if yours does this check your body contol module. Mine didn't work and needed to be replaced when would they ever all work at the same time on a dodge? mine never would....... seriously check the ignition switch.

The needs for combustion are fuel, spark and compression. It sounds as though fuel is eliminated, I doubt compression. Pull a plug and hook the wire to it and crank it, does it spark?

Just had this problem with my 2001 Grand Am. Was just about to take it to a shop when I ran across an article that said that the RKE (remote keyless entry) system has a bug in it that for some reason prohibits the vehicle from starting. More often than not it happens out of the blue. To fix the problem you have to reset your computer. Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the on position and leave it there for 10 minutes, then turn the key off and try to start it. It should start, worked for mine.

Take of the plastic covering 3 screws on bottom, unscrew titlt wheel lever, turn key to on or start posistion there is a little metal clipon the bottom that you can pull out (not all the way) towards the key then on the back side of the cylinder you will see a lever in side a hole push it in the cylinder should come out

on top of the engine there is a plate with 4 bolts in it and there is a large plug with wires connected to it on the right side of it take the 4 bolts out and take the plug loose and the plate will lift off . the plugs are down inside the holes . you will need a spark plug socket and atleast a 12 inch extentsion to get them out .

OK- look at the engine block. On top, there's a panel, the IDS module, that runs lengthwise across the middle of the block. It has 4 bolts that you need to take out. Once you have them out, you'll probably need to disconnect the electrical connector at the end of the IDS module to be able to lift it all the way up. To get to the spark plugs, lift the IDS module off the block. You'll have to use a little elbow grease as the connectors for the spark plugs are connected to this module and they have to come off the plugs before you can completely lift the module up. But once you get it off, look down into the h oles about where the bolts would have been, and wah-lah, there's your plugs. Make sure you have a ong enough etension for the rachet lol I had all that crap moved and went to take the plugs out and didn't have a long enough extension... talk about frustrating!

Remove the tire,then you have to take the bolts that hold the caliper on out,remove the caliper then you should be able to change the pads.Note that you may need some power tools and a pair of big channel-lock pliers to push the pistons back so the new pads fit back in the disk brakes again,also you may have to remove the bake line.You should bleed ALL the brakes around the jeep starting from the back tires

on the driver side of the car theres a fuse panel on the side of the dash when you open the door. there should be a reset button inside there. if there is turn the key to the run position push the button toill the oil change light starts flashing. after a few seconds there should be 3-5 beeps and the light should go out. if that buttons not there then turn the key to the run position still and pump the gass to the floor three times. leave the key on till the light flashes and you the beepeing sound and the light should go out. if in doubt check your owners manual aswell it tells you how to reset it there to

depends on the type of transmission. If it's a automatic it could be a lack of fluid or if it's a brown color it needs a fluid and filter change or a need for band adjustment, internal clutches or torque converter. If you get a scanner you can check for trouble codes, depends on the year of car. IF it's a Manual transmission, it could be that the clutch needs adjusted, or as bad as needing a new clutch, throw out bearing, pressure plate. It depends on the year of car and model of transmission

Since there is more than one engine, this question is vague. BClear. I assume you have a 2.3 quad four motor. If so, the plugs are no visable from the outside. On the top of the motor there is a housing cover that needs removal, After taking the retaining bolts off, the cover will pull out. This cover has a module and 2 coil packs attached to it. The coils are under the coil housing and the housing has 4 boots attached to it. REPLACE the boots when you do the plugs. USe dielectric grease when you replace them as well. After you reassemble the motor and still have a miss, suspect the coil housing the ;). pukenstein@aol.com
