Food was pretty dismal - beans and beef for the most part, and a cowhand would soon get tired of eating the same thing day after day. A good cook was a fine thing for a cattle drive to have along.
If you were an experienced hand, the drive wasn't as bad because you got to take the choice positions in the front of the herd. Inexperienced cowhands got the lousy jobs of trailing behind the herd and would end their day covered in dust and cow manure. You also got better pay as an experienced hand. The trail boss usually got between $100 and $125 a month on a drive. The cook was next in importance, usually earning around $60 a month!
Large ranches have many employees. A ranch hand would be someone who works on different daily tasks usually related to keeping the ranch functioning. They could be real cowboys that manage the livestock or degreed professionals with expertise related to whatever the ranch produces. Some large ranches will have family houses included with the job.

Have a lot of cattle and no money. It depends on what kind of rancher you want be! Do you atually want to be a rancher? Or do you just like the idea? It takes a lot of hard work! You need to just do research on it! Read books on the care of you're animals (whatever kind they are) you will be having! Will you be building your own or will you be buying one? Personaly I like ranch's! If you want to have any vacation, your gonna have to have hired help (only somebody you know you can trust). Otherwise you will be doing everything youself!! There are rewards for doing it yourself. Don't think there's nothing in for you. There's a lot of manual labor in this type of work! Overall, ranching I think is good for you!
