How was renaissance art differ from medieval art?

Medieval art was mostly religious and concerned with conveying Christian beliefs and values. Renaissance art was less focused on religion and more focused on the daily life of people. The style of renaissance painting itself was also much more realistic than medieval art, meaning that renaissance artists were very concerned with proportions and showing the details of their subject.

The Renaissance was a period of revolutionary change in politics, science, religon and especially art. The biggest difference between Renaissance art and Medieval art was the focus on artisitic realism. Famous artists like Davinci and Michelangelo developed the use of depth and perspective drawing. The idea of foreshortening was also discovered here. The Renaissance also allowed a time for artists to focus their craft more on the world and the nature of man opposed to religion and secular beliefs. Art also helped the economy because art socially reflected how wealthy a family was to others. There are 6 main charcteristics surrounding Renaissance art that differentiates it from medival art, which are: the use of expression, the use of perspective ("vanishing point"), the use of classicism (Greek/Roman influenced), emphasis on the individual, the geometrical arrangement of figures and the use of shadowing. Medival art was beautiful, but Renaissance art was very 3 dimentional and life-like. Michelangelo's David sculpture is said to be so realistic that it looks as though it is breathing. It is truly amazing that someone could have sculpted that beautiful statue out of one solid piece of marble. This is how Renaissance art greatly differs from Medieval art.

Why were nature and human nature important to Renaissance artists and writers?

The answer is quite simple. The Renaissance came after a period of war and upheaval in Europe. Bloodshed-death-disease- famine and let's not forget (not too far removed) the good old "Dark Ages" were certainly calamities that created their own period of darkness in both, painters and writers alike.

After that period-babies were born, new plant life began to grow once again (as after a forest fire), and with the the large loss of lives, there was enough land for everyone. It was a very prosperous time (as is always the case after war)-a time of regrowth. Europe and its' people were reborn, hence, this rebirth translated to art and prose. A celebration of life; a time of plenty.

Art is typically a form that reflects history. Artists/authors, are telling history through interpretation: think of cavemen and their drawings of buffalo, Indians and their pottery, early American's and folk art; the list goes on. The word Rennaissance means rebirth.

What is the history of portraits in Renaissance?

In ancient Egypt, stone sculpture and painted reliefs of couples furnished the tombs of the elite. Standing or seated, idealized and youthful, they were created for eternal togetherness (48.111). In the more recent art of sub-Saharan Africa, figures of couples, usually carved in wood, are abstracted in ways that symbolize the continuity of the community and the ideas of fertility and abundance (1997.394.15).

Images of Greek gods as couples or pairs are often shown in passionate encounters involving tensions between divine and mortal lovers (49.7.16). Biblical and classical images of couples illustrate moralizing tales such as that of a righteous man who is diverted from his goals by a seductive female (1975.1.1416). Legendary lovers, restrained in their amorous actions by sumptuous clothing, are favorite subjects for illustrated pages of royal books commissioned by Persian kings(50.164). The sculptural forms of South Asian deities are remarkably sensual: slim, lithe males and rounded, voluptuous females are metaphors for divine fertility, auspiciousness, and power (1987.218.1).

In Renaissance Europe, portrait paintings of elegantly dressed couples reflect the importance of high-status marriages at royal courts and among the powerful new merchant classes (89.15.19). With the emergence of middle classes in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, there was a growing interest in home and family. Artists were commissioned to portray couples in poses suggesting affection and admiration

well the renaissance was point after the middle ages when people started to progress towards higher learning in a sense there were no specific warriors besides the typical 'knight'. Unless you count scholars, artists, inventors, and musicians. Which fought against the ignorance of the previous era and brought about the age of learning. So if you want to get down to it scholars combated against ignorance. Artist and Musicians combated against depravity and confinement. And inventors fought to create easier living conditions.
