Science Experiments

Experiments often conducted by students to test different scientific theories and hypotheses

11,111 Questions

What is a good topic for doing a hypothesis test on?

Anything you're interested in! Seriously, you're not going to put in the time needed to do an experiment if you're bored just with the topic. Pick something you would really like to find out, like which gum flavor lasts longer or whether hair grows faster if you brush it 100 times a night or what happens if you mix vinegar with baking soda. It doesn't have to be a Nobel-Prize-winning hypothesis to get a good grade - it just has to be a good guess with some data to back it up!

What is the similarity of the angles of incidence and the angle of reflection?

The similarity of the two is that if.... example: if you shined a flashlight at a 30 degree angle on a mirror it will reflect and show as a 30 degree angle on the other side.

They are equal.

What was the Philadelphia Experiment and what were its results?

The Philadelphia Experiment is a myth. It never happened. Supposedly it was an attempt to turn warships invisible which resulted in severe disruptions of the space-time continuum with people disappearing and reappearing at different places and times or being physically merged with parts of the ship. I want to emphasize again though that none of this ever happened. Michael Montagne

Does E. coli hydrolyze casein?

What is the term for the muscle that bends and flexes the elbow joint?

Flexion (same as bending) at the elbow joint (between the humerus and the radius and ulna) is mainly achieved by the Brachialis Muscle. This is not the answer most would expect as everyone knows the Biceps Brachii (Biceps of the arm) are what flexes this joint. In fact the biceps does both supination and flexion of the elbow because its insertion is on the radius. Only when the forearm is supinated, the biceps is able to assist the deeper and more powerful brachialis muscle with the flexion of the elbow.

Can brain cancer cause depression?

Yes, both traumatic and organic brain injury can cause or exacerbate depression, depending on the area of the brain affected. These people may or may not respond to medication, depending on the extent, location, and nature of the injury.

How do you extract ephedrine from a mineral block?

You cannot extract ephedrine or pseudoephedrine from a mineral block. Anyone who tells you that they have done it is either mistaken or a liar. The claim that ephedrine can be extracted from a livestock mineral block has been proven as false and erroneous by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) scientists upon attempting to extract ephedrine from mineral blocks through various methods that have been "tried and tested" by various people. The only reason that these people would be wanting to attempt to extract such substance from mineral blocks would only be for the purpose of making an illegal narcotic drug called Crystal Meth. Apart from the evidence gathered by the DEA, scientists from an anonymous major feed-producing company have also "concluded that [mineral salt blocks or licks] contain no ephedrine or pseudoephedrine." However, the DEA article below does mention that salt (NOT ephedrine nor "psuedoephedrine") from such mineral blocks can be extracted for the production of Crystal Meth.

(Note that producing such a highly illegal substance can and will land you in jail. If you aren't in jail yet for taking or making such narcotics, it's only a matter of time before you are.)

How does hemophilia spread in your body?

Depending on the definition of carrier you're using the answer is yes or no.

Definition 1: An individual with a genetically linked disorder whom, while showing no signs or symptoms of the disorder, can pass the genetic disorder to their children.

Answer:

In this case, the answer would be no. If a male has a genetic mutation for hemophilia, he would show the signs and symptoms. Since the trait is located on the X chromosome and males only have one X chromosome there would be no choice but to demonstrate that trait.

Definition 2: An individual with a genetic disorder whom can pass that disorder on to their children.

Answer:

In this case, the answer would be yes. Males will pass the genetic mutation on to their daughters but since they pass their Y chromosome on to their sons, not the X, males cannot pass the genes to their sons.

How do adhesion and cohesion explain capillary action?

Surface tension is related to the cohesive properties of water. Capillary action however, is related to the adhesive properties of water. You can see capillary action 'in action' by placing a straw into a glass of water. The water 'climbs' up the straw. What is happening is that the water molecules are attracted to the straw molecules. When one water molecule moves closer to a the straw molecules the other water molecules (which are cohesively attracted to that water molecule) also move up into the straw. Capillary action is limited by gravity and the size of the straw. The thinner the straw or tube the higher up capillary action will pull the water.

Function of magnifying glass?

Islamic opticians, mainly Alhazen, who was in his turn influenced by Ibn Sahl's 10th century writings about optics.

Roger Bacon further investigated the properties of the magnifying-glass after he had read those and other writings.
