How do you change the starter on a 1996 Toyota Corolla?
I just did this and the whole job took 1.5 hours. Cost of part was $100. The dealer wanted 400 for the whole job. You need a helper when you get to one of the steps.
1. Remove battery neg. cable 2. Remove air cleaner incl large rubber hose and plastic housing. The wire holders are the trickiest to unlatch. 3. Using 14mm wrench, undo top bolt to finger loose. 4. NOTE: All work done from drivers side of engine. Loosen the other 14 mm bolt and remove. 5. Remove top bolt, need a helper to hold other side of starter from other side of car. Place starter on ehaust below. 6. Turn starter over and remove plug and cable. 7. Trickiest step is then to remove the old starter from engine. I was able to squeeze it under heater hoses and through other hoses. Be careful not to damage any other hoses! 8. Follow steps in reverse. Be careful squeezing new starter back into place and behind manifold, and lay there so you can place cable and wire back on. 9. Have helper hold starter while you finger tighten top bolt. 10. Place in the bottom bolt and finger tight. 11. I used a wrench (box) to tighten the two bolts up. 12. Replace battery cable and test engine before replacing the air cleaner assembly. 13. Replace air cleaner assembly and any other cables and hoses. Double check!
This is how I did it - took me about 1-1/2 hours.
The sizes given are the wrench sizes needed to perform the step.
1. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
2. Remove the hose that connects the air cleaner to the throttle body.
3. Remove the top of the air cleaner box (4 clips on the corners).
4. Take out the air filter. Disconnect the sensor on the side of the air cleaner.
5. Remove the three bolts (2 - 12mm, 1 - 10mm) that hold the bottom of the air cleaner box to the inner fender and remove the box.
6. Disconnect the two rubber hoses on the top of the air canister (one large, one small).
7. Loosen the clamp bolt (10mm) (be careful as there is a non-captive nut that will drop if you remove the bolt completely) and slide the air canister out.
8. Remove the two bolts that hold the fuel filter on to its bracket (10mm). It is the same bracket as the air canister's.
9. Remove the air canister/fuel filter bracket by removing the four bolts that hold it in place (10mm).
10. Remove the wire harness/hose bracket directly in front of the top starter bolt (12mm) - this will facilitate your ability to get a socket wrench on the starter bolt. On my car it was RIGHT in the way!
11. Loosen the top starter bolt (14mm).
12. Loosen the bottom starter bolt (14mm) and remove it completely.
13. Hold the starter up and remove the top bolt completely. Flip the starter over and place it on the drive axle below with the wiring facing up.
14. Disconnect the solenoid plug and the starter cable (12mm).
15. Remove the starter by snaking it through the driver's side of the motor compartment. There's enough room if you're patient - be careful not to snag anything and damage it.
16. Snake the new starter down through the driver's side reverse of the way the old one came out. Lie it on the drive axle and connect the solenoid connector and the cable.
17. Flip it over and up into place. Hold it in place and start the top bolt. Tighten it by hand enough that the starter stays in place by itself.
18. Start the bottom bolt; tighten it up all the way.
19. Tighten the top bolt the rest of the way.
20. Connect the battery cable and try the starter - before you put everything back!
21. Replace canister/fuel filter bracket and bolt the fuel filter in place.
22. Slide the air canister in and tighten the clamp bolt. Connect the two rubber hoses on top of it.
23. Install the bottom of the air cleaner box; plug in the sensor.
24. Put in the air filter and then replace the top of the air cleaner.
25. Connect the big hose from the air cleaner to the throttle body.
NOTE: You may have to reset the "check engine" light when you're finished (I think starting the car when we check it in Step 20 can freak out the computer since there are still things disconnected). To do this, find the fuse block on the driver's side of the engine compartment; remove the 15A EFI fuse for 30 seconds. Put the fuse back in - the light should now be reset.
That's it! Shouldn't need another one for another 150,000 miles!

I just changed the starter on a 1994 Geo Prizm which uses identical components to the 1994 Corolla. It took me about 2 hours. Danny's instructions are excellent; I just wanted to add a few comments:
1. I found it useful to use a piece of stiff wire (like 14 gauge electrical wire) to hold up the wiring harness. Same goes for the fuel line connected to the fuel filter and heater hoses. This creates a larger unobstructed opening to remove the starter.
2. I disconnected the (+) connector and starter cable before removong the starter since I did not want to break a wire if I dropped the starter on removal. I did this from the passenger side. I also mounted the starter before reconnecting the wires.
3. I could access and remove the bottom 14mm starter bolt from the driver side. This was the most difficult part of the job since it was torqued on pretty good and there is little room to get leverage. A ratcheting box wrench works well.
4. Removing the starter was suprising easy. I was concerned about the tight space given the wiring harness, clutch cables, etc. but it was not a problem.
This is a response from 2 users. Danny was the first user and he should get credit for the detailes instrcutions.
How do you replace the brake lights on a 1993 Toyota Corolla?
there is 1 nut to remove. It is on the inside of the trunk. Pull the protective cloth covering away from the inside, directly on the other side of the light. There should be a brass colored nut. Remove it. Then take the 2 black screws out on the outside of the light. They are located on the inside part of the light closest to the middle of the trunk. The cover should slide out after the 2 screws & nut is removed. !
How do you replace the marker light on a 93 Toyota Corolla?

How do you replace the water pump on a 1990 Toyota Cressida?
There is no special procedure for replacing the water pump. You will have to remove the belts, fan at a minimum. To make the job easier it is recommended that you remove the radiator. It is also wise to service all consumable parts at that time with genuine Toyota parts: Hoses, coolant, thermostat & belts.
Where is the starter solenoid for a 1998 Toyota Corolla?
I believe that the solenoid is located ont the starter itself. If you can just follow the positive battery cable down to its next junction towards the starter motor; that is usually where the starter solenoid is located.
How do you find the fuel pump for a corolla?
Depends on the model year of the car. Generally speaking, most of the newer Corollas have the fuel pump inside the gas tank.
To access - you need to remove the rear seats and remove the access cover plate, then remove the entire pump assembly unit. Disassemble the pump assembly to get at the fuel pump.
How you replace rear view mirror on Subaru?
Newer models 2000 and later have a cam mount. Rotate the the bracket attached to the mount that is glued to the window 180 degrees and the mirror will slide out of the mount. I think many foreign cars have this same mount.
Why do Toyota dash lights stay on after engine starts?
A bad relay switch could be the culprit if dash lights remain on after engine starts in a Toyota. Cold weather can also cause these lights to stay on after the engine starts.
How do you disarm a 1989 Toyota Cressida alarm?
use the ignition key to turn to on or to start and the system should reset. I stopped using mine because it would trigger at any time wothout an intrusion
It is simply 'telling you' that one or more of your head light, park light, or brake light bulbs are out. This includes the 'third' brake light so check all.
How do you change the rear brake and tail lights on a 97 Toyota Corolla?
(i) Use a "star" screwdriver to unscrew the two(2) black screws on the outside.
On the inside if there is a canvas remove this by gently unscrewing the two(2) black plastic screws
(ii) Use a No. 8 spanner to remove the nut on the inside.
(iii) Pull gently the whole casing containing all the rear lights(brake/turn signal/reverse/blinkers)

(v)Remember not to lose the screws Replace everything as it was
Happy Driving.I just change mine today 1/3/05.
I did this today 7/14/10. The only thing that was confusing for me was removing the whole casing. You have to jiggle it a little to manuever it off because the outside part is hooked on.

Where is the starter on a 1991 Toyota Corolla?
In the 60's, there was am excellent how-to book about Repairing VW's for "Dummies". It didn't assume that the reader had very much knowledge about mechanics but it could get a person from point a to point b without breaking something. Here's an attempt at Toyota starter motors for "Dummies". I hope it helps.
On a 1991 sedan 4A FE engine (dual overhead cam) with an automatic transmission the starter is tucked in a fairly tight spot beneath the intake manifold. But access to it is easier than it first looks. Get a good drop light, disconnect the negative lead to the battery, put the car in park with e brake on, block the opposite wheels with chocks, jack up the driver side front of the car, use jack stands, and follow the steps below:
1) Unclip and remove the top to the aircleaner, the air cleaner filter, and unbolt the 3 bolts holding the base of the aircleaner using a socket wrench.
2) Remove the remaining black plastic section and 3 inch diameter rubber hose that leads from the air cleaner to the throttle body. There are two large hose clamps that need to be loosened in order to pull the hose free from the large opening of the throttle body. Be careful to not damage the various surrounding vacuum lines in the process.
3) Now standing on the driver's side with a bright drop light, look toward the region where you removed the 3 bolts that held the base of the aircleaner in place. Angle the light so that it shines toward the direction of the right front wheel (passenger side wheel) perpendicular to and just beyond the 1 inch diameter black bundle of wiring harness. There is a bracket that holds this wiring harness bundle in place. Remove this bracket and bolt with a 13 mm ( I think) open end wrench. Now you will clearly be able to see the top bolt head (facing you) that holds the starter motor.
4) Use a long extension and a 14 mm socket to loosen this starter moter bolt part of the way.
5) Now get under the car beneath the drive axles with the drop light and look up toward where you loosened the top bolt of the starter. Locate the starter.
6) Use a socket, universal, and extension to unbolt the nut on the bottom of the starter moter that connects the thick wire lead that has the rubber boot over the nut. Also unplug the thin wire lead next to it that clips onto the starter.
7) There are only two bolts that hold the starter in place and you have already partly loosened the top bolt. Now it's time to remove the second (lower) bolt. Use a long extension and a 14 mm socket. Undo it all the way. Now, the only thing holding the starter is the partly removed top bolt.
8) While you are underneath the car, reaching up and holding the starter with your right hand, have a friend totally remove the top bolt so that the starter is totally free.
9) Remove the starter by angling it toward the right fender plastic splash gard. My splash gard was flexible enough for me to bend it with my right elbow so that the starter could be removed easily enough. On your car, you may need to remove a few of the screws that hold that part of the plastic splash gard so that it becomes bendable enough to provide room for removal of the starter.
10) Before installing the new starter, compare the old one with the new one to check that the bolt pattern and mating surface is the same. Some starters may be slightly longer or shorter in other ways but that's OK. Also, check the new starter to see that all of the bolts and screws are snug. Remanufacturers nowadays are sometimes sloppy. I had to return two starter motors without ever installing them (both on the same day!) because of a stripped bolt on one and a barely hanging on, cross-threaded nut on another.
11) Don't break the plastic connector that accepts the thin plug-in wire! Be extra careful when tightening the nut attaching the thick electrical lead to the bottom of the starter so that you don't accidentally rotate the wire's metal connector into the plastic connector that holds the thinner plug-in wire. While focusing on tightening that nut, you may forget that the fragile plastic connector is just next to it.

It's under the intake manifold, between the engine and the firewall. 2 bolts, and you have to get to it from underneath the car.

How do you change the starter on a 1991 Toyota Corolla?
You take the old one out, then put the new/rebuilt/junkyard one in. Follow instructions carefully!
Why Toyota Cressida temperature go up when car stopping?
when you are driving the cooling system depends on the air flow by the fan through the radiator to the engine two functions happened here first the air come through the radiator panels and cooling the water that go inside the engine secondly the air cover the outside engine which reduce the temp. indirectly. so at the time of car stopping no air flowing through the radiator and automatically the temp go up.
