1997 Toyota rav4 stalling and rough idling?
2001 Rav4 started intermittent stalling at idle. Once every 3 days for 2 weeks the engine would run fine and then die at stop light or stop sign. Then stalling increased to 3 times per day for 4 days until it finally stopped and would not restart. Unfortunately it caused my wife to be stuck in traffic for 15 min until I could get there and pull her home on a Friday.
When the stalling began I checked all vaccum hoses, cleaned the k&n air filter, changed the oil and checked/cleaned the pcv valve. I bought a Chilton manual and I found that this 2001 model does not have egr in the US, so no sticking egr valve to worry about. When it finally died pulled the codes and got 1300, 1305,1310, 1315 ignitor fail on coil 1, 2,3,4. I checked the wiring diagrams in the chilton manual and found a 15amp fuse in the coil circuit, this fuse labeled the IGN fuse and it was blown. The truck would now turn over and start right up but then sputter and die again! Well at least I got it running, but it would run 20sec to 5 min and then sputter and die and sometimes idle erratic then die.
I spent the rest of the day Saturday checking the blogs on the net, changing the battery, cleaning the map sensor, cleaning the idle air control valve, draining the tank via unplugging the starter and disconnecting the fuel rail, connecting fuel hose to a bucket outside the truck and operating the fuel pump with the ignition in the start position to eliminate water/contaminated gasoline. I then added 5 gal of fresh gas. Still, the truck would crank and run and sputter then die.
I then went back to the 15amp fuse that blew and how it was providing power to the coils in parallel. the circuit diagram shows a filter at the end of this circuit. I pulled the plug on the filter mounted on the cylinder head ( looks like a small black box with a black/white wire going to it) this didnot stop my problem.
I then unhooked the first coil wire from the first spark plug. The truck cranked and ran albiet rough from the unhooked cylinder 1 misfire, but the truck did not die or sputter out. I hooked one back up and pulled the coil on cylinder 2. The truck ran rough and misfired and died. I did this for 3 and 4. I found that coil 1 was defective and causing the truck to sputter and die. Coil one must have shorted so bad it blew the fuse on that Friday, other times it would ground out enough to kill the ignition enough to stall the engine. One coil at autopart store $88 Orielly Autoparts on a Sunday night. Truck runs great. Hope this helps someone.

- Empty glove box and pop up the two plastic stops on the inside of each side. Slide the stop forward and remove it from the glove box.
- Undo the single screw that slides in the arm thingy (!) on the outside right of the glove box. Latch the glove box.
- Pop up the kick plate on the passenger door side. I used a screwdriver and was careful not to scratch anything.
- Unscrew the plastic stud thingy (!) that holds into the floor the trim piece that contains the fuse box door.
- Lift up the rubber door seal just enough so you can take off the trim piece.
- Use a 8mm socket to undo the screws holding in the hinges at the bottom of the glove box.
- Unlatch the glove box and remove it.
- Take a Stanley knife (or coping saw) and carefully cut the plastic cross brace at its ends. You can see where to cut because there are cut-outs already in place.
- Unscrew the four screws holding the metal cross brace in place.
- Unclip the filter cover. Pull out the filter. Be amazed at how dirty it is.
- Reverse the above, except don't replace the plastic brace. I found it was tricky to get the hinge screws started, but all you need is patience.

How to change rotors on a 2000 Acura?
They are pretty easy. I just did my friends front rotors and pads on an 01' Acura TL's. Pull all wheels off. Take pads off shoud be a 14mm to take the calipers off. Compress the calipers. Hang up your calipers w/ wire or string so they are not hanging by the brake line. Next look on the back side of the carrier. There will be 2 17mm bolts holding a the bracket for the calipers and pads. If you have trouble breaking them free, use a brass or dead blow hammer on the wrench. (You will be doing the same to tighten the bolts back up.) Next there will be 2 Phillips head screws on the rotors. Now these can be hard to get out w/ out stripping the head of the scews. I used an impact tool w/ a hammer to get them out. The craftsman one runs about 30 bucks. (It is not an air tool. It just looks like an oversized screw driver. It is spring loaded, so when you nail it w/ the hammer you will want to twist at the same time and it will break the screws loose.) Once those screws are out pull the rotors off. Degrease the new ones and reverse the process. Make sure you use the impact tool to put the screws back in. Hopefully the rotors come w/ them.
If you change your rotors I suggest changing the pads also.
This was for the fronts on an 01 Acura TL. I do not know if there is a difference between the years. Pay close attention when you start to pull the rotor off. Should be the same process for the rear I do not know. The only thing that might be different on the rear is that the bearing is in the rotor. Check the back rotors to see what they are. (If bearings are in the rear rotors, buy Bendix rotors for the rear. They come w/ the bearing carriers already in the rotor so you do not have to press them in. Buy grease and rear seal for rear rotors. Pack the bearing w/ new grease, put seal in back or rotor, make sure it is flush and put the rotor back on.) I mainly work on BMW's, and VW's.

Push the top to the left so the right tab clears and then push to the right so the other tab clears. Then you can open farther (dumping the contents on the floor)... The filter is in a white plastic frame that slides out. Clean or replace element.
