Toyota Sequoia rear hatch latch assembly replacement.

I recently found it necessary to replace the rear hatch door latch assembly. It had broken and there was no way to open the rear hatch from the inside or outside.

The 2001 Sequoia sold in 2000 had 89,000 miles and was maintained well. It looks like this plastic part that failed is just a weak design and most or all will fail at some point.

1. You can open the rear hatch from the outside if you can get the small piece of the broken lever out of the square hole that is on the right side of the handle grip area. You will need to use a strong piece of wire or a screwdriver type tool with a slight bend on the end. The lever that pulls on the cable that opens the latch is located above the opening in the handle grip area, accessed through the small square hole. Insert the tool that you made and fish around to find the cable lever, you will need to have the tool pointed up to find the lever. Once you find the lever pull down to pull the lever. Note: make sure that the hatch is unlocked or it won't open.

2. If you can't locate the lever or can't make it open from the outside you will need to do it from the inside of the vehicle. This isn't fun but it can be accomplished with a little sweat and a few choice words thrown in.

3. You can work from the outside of the truck at this point, roll the rear glass down to give you access. The plastic trim pieces on each side of the rear glass can de popped off by hand, they each have three plastic barbs that hold them on. Remove them carefully and pull straight out to remove them, this will give you access to the large rear piece of plastic trim that covers the inside of the rear door.

4. Remove the vinyl pull-strap that is located on the rear panel, use a #2 Philips to do this. Now start to remove the large inside door panel. This panel has the rear glass inside rubber anti-rattle blade attached to the top of it. (If you were able to open the hatch door from the outside you can remove the inside panel by starting at the bottom of the panel and using a thin blade to lift the panel away from the door and then pop the plastic barbs loose, then lift it up and off of the door sheet-metal.) Starting at one corner, bend out and pull up on the panel where it is hooked over the top of the window opening sheet-metal. It takes a little force to get it started but be persistent, once it is started work towards the other end. Once it's loose at the top you can reach inside and pop loose the plastic barbs that retain the panel and remove it completely.

5. You now have access to the inside of the hatch. Remove the three round rubber grommets, this give you access to the latch lever that pulls on the release cable. Reach inside with a screwdriver push down on the lever and you will be able to release the latch on the hatch door and open it.

6. There is a white plastic cover covering the cable attachment point, remove it by pulling down and away from the assembly, it clips onto the assembly bracket and helps secure the cable to the lever attachment point. You can now release the cable from the assembly, remove the screws holding the license plate recess cover and the nut holding the key cylinder assembly and then remove the cable assembly bracket, (two nuts). Now you can remove the license plate recess panel and the broken latch lever assembly that is attached to it as a unit.

7. You can't just purchase the ($2.00) plastic piece that broke, Toyota will make you purchase the entire assembly, $63.00. By the way I shopped around and got three different estimates from Toyota Dealers, ranging from $280 to $360 to do this job. This first repair took me seven hours because I didn't know what I was doing, I spent 3 hours just attempting to open the hatch, I could do it now in about two hours.

A band called 'The Academy Is' does a cover and I had thought it was their cover, but I don't think it's their cover. This is killing me not knowing because it sounds like a pretty good cover. I'm dying to see this commercial. What did it look like? I wonder if it will air during the Super Bowl. Is Toyota a sponser? My guess is it will be on during the Super Bowl at some point. The commercial is these kids rolling down a hill in these giant bubble looking things and the Sequoia is being used to tow the bubble things back up a hill. It looks like a lot of fun whatever it is those bubble things are... I'm thinking this cover of 'Superman' might have been done by Plural from their 2005 album 'I Feel Beautiful.' I need to see the TV ad again to be sure.

It will depend on the make and model of the car. They do this so one can make a copy of the automated keyless entry remote.

It is kind of a pain.. I had my 10 year old turn the radio on and off till i got the motor to suck it in...You just feed the new mast in till it takes it...took me about 20 minutes to do..you may have to use a little force...Oh ya, you have to unscrew the chrome top piece first...

take out the ashtray pop the front cover off the centre console by pulling it out from the bottom then unscrew the screws holding in the radio and unplug the iso connectors

The fuel pump is located on the top of the fuel tank. All you have to do is drop the fuel tank and remove the fuel pump and replace. I replaced mine at home in a little over an hour. A word of caution though, make sure there is very little fuel in the tank or it will be very difficult to handle. You have to drop the fuel tank and the pump is located on the top of the tank. open trunk, remove the 4 wing nuts, remove the casing from the outside. Bulbs are in there.

There is an electronic release button located on the dash that activates a solenoid which prevents other people from getting to your gas filler cap for security. Solenoid could be shot, or fuses, or a relay. Buy a test light and start tracing the circuit or bring it to the dealership.

Yes. I have had this happen to me twice and both times it smoked my brakes. The first time all four of them were disintegrated and the second time I brought it in it just disintegrated my back brakes. It had only been 12,000 between these occurrence's. The last time I was driving down Laguna Canyon Road and the Vehicle Traction Control System Lights came on while I was doing 65 m.p.h. with my 8-year-old daughter in the back seat. We were in the lane closest to the side of the road and it took control of my car and I thought we were going to die. It went to the right and I think I pulled it back to the left (we swerved back and forth) and I found out I had no back brakes at all. I mean every piece that had to do with the braking system in the rear was totally gone. The first time this happened all four brakes were totally gone. I took this car to Toyota and they wanted to charge me over $1600 to fix the brakes and $400 to fix an O2 sensor. They said this did not happen to the 2001's only the 2003s had a recall on them. Since I started researching this there are hundreds (maybe thousands of people) who have had this happen to them. What's it going to take for Toyota to admit to this. Some more people to DIE? I can't even sell my car now in good conscience. But I do have a lawyer and were going to figure out a plan. I probably will get a hold of our State Senator also.

Chirping means the brake pads are worn out. That is a warning device built into the brake pad. Replace the brake pads.

2 remove the cdplayer/tape unit...pull out the center air vent underneath the CD player. There will be 2 x 10mm bolts in there...remove boths and bobs your uncle

On most newer vehicles the tail light bulbs can be accessed by opening the rear door and removing a panel that allows access to the tail lights and the bulbs. If this is not possible you should have some type of screws on the tail light lenses itself that can be removed to access the bulbs.

on a 1999 mountaineer, simply remove the two screws at the top of the lens assy. then gently pry the lens rearward away from the steel piilar and the lens assy will come off into your hands. the wires going to the bulb sockets will limit distance the lens assy will move. now reach in and give a twist to the socket and it should separate from the lens assy. now replace the bulb and reverse the process. the whole ordeal should not take more than ten or fifteen minutes.

It has a timing belt. Only some diesels or the 2.2 petrol Vectra's have timing chains.

I don't really measure the minimum thickness of every cars' or truck pads..... we can see thru looking in between the rims w/ flashlight. Sometimes the outer pads gets more easier to worn out or get thinner or vice versa. I usually advice my clients to get rid of it. Better than forgetting it and can cost you a lot by changing every rotors. But to tell you the truth, I changed the pads at its 1/8 of an inch.

It will cost about $700 to $900 (depending on brand) for four tires including installation.

open your life gate, take the two screws holding the light in, pull away from car, if working on drivers side, pull to left and vice versa, twist out fitting for burned out light and replace.

it is located in in the trunk of the car on the left side there is a little rubber funnel and a plastic peace that you need to pull out and there you go.
