Does morning sickness indicate having a girl?

Women experience different degrees of morning sickness regardless of the sex of the fetus, each woman is different and each pregnancy is different.

And, it has long been considered an old wives' tale that the sex of the fetus made a difference in the frequency and severity of morning sickness and that you could predict when you had worse symptoms that you were carrying a girl.

But now, one study has reported they found that women with severe nausea and vomiting were 50% more likely to be carrying a girl. (However, this was only one study.)

Additional information:

A pregnancy with multiple fetuses (i.e., twins, triplets, etc.) will have increased severity of morning sickness.

Morning sickness is a response to the increased levels of hormones produced initially by the ovaries, and then by the placenta.

Anecdotal account from a contributor:

Yes, the fetus could be of either sex. I was severely sick my entire pregnancy. I had to take a prescription medication because I was vomiting so much. I had a boy.

Vaginal ultrasound at 7 weeks no baby I am measuring 5 weeks but could it be a miscarriage and they aren't telling me i go back in 2 weeks for another ultrasound?

I understand what you are saying when you say messuring, they messure the sac and it calculates what the size is to get the age of the sac/fetus.

If an ultrasound of your 4 month old shows an enlarged ventricle what does that mean?

An enlarged ventricle is usually due to either cardiomyopathy (a weakening of the heart muscle) or valvular heart disease. Valve disease is usually treated by correcting the underlying valve problem (initially with medicines, often later with surgery). The most common cause of an enlarged ventricle is cardiomyopathy,a serious disease in which the heart muscle becomes inflamed and doesn't work as well as it should. Initial treatment is with medications, such as diuretics, digitalis, vasodilators (ACE inhibitors and/or ARB inhibitors), and beta blockers, such as carvedilol (Coreg) or metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL). In more severe cases special pacemakers or defibrillators are used. Only in the most difficult cases are heart transplants occasionally required. Hope this helped you out. Good luck!

Ive had bloodwork done twice one week apart and the HCG levels only went up a tiny bit Ive had both an internal n external ultrasound done revealed no yolk sac. am i going to miscarry?

That is difficult to say. The rise in hCG is excellent as the fact that it moves upward is more important than the actual level. Depending on how many weeks you are, the non-appearance if a yolk sac may or may not be significant. A sac should be visible by 5 weeks 4 days. If you are way past this point, then it doesn't look good. If you are only a week or two past this, it is possible that your baby is just younger than the dates suggest. Usually this is due to late ovulation or long cycles.

What does 'a 1.4 X 1.8 CM follicle in the left ovary and no free fluid' mean?

Assuming you haven't been through menopause yet, it's a good thing! Follicles form normally when you ovulate...they will always show up in an ultrasound of your ovaries. When they do these, they also look for ascites which is a fluid that builds up around ovarian tumors...sounds like your scan was normal...I have them done every 3 months due to a family history of ovarian cancer and have done lots of research to understand my test results.

Is it normal after an ultrasound to bleed a little bit of bright red blood?

Spotting is okay, but period bleeding is bad and if that is your case, you should see a doctor right away.

What is a single artery umbilical cord?

You really need to talk to the pediatrician about this. The umbilical cord usually has two arteries carrying blood from the baby to the placenta to be reoxygentated and one vein carrying oxygenated blood back from the placenta to the baby. Occasionally having only one artery is a sign that there is a problem with the baby, usually a kidney problem. YOu will find that your baby has tests to make sure his/her kidneys are working properly.

In your ultrasound the head circumference and abdominal diameter were the same length but the femur lenght was smaller which is more accurate?

I have had many conflicting ultrasounds. I had the exact opposite problem- the femur length was a week further in gestation than the head or abdomen, and the estimated weight put her a week further along than her femur. What my ultrasound technician told me was to trust in the initial date given by the obgyn when I had my very first ultrasound (I was only 5 weeks at my first appt). The earlier the scan, the less the variation in size. I am 5'1, but with those long legs, I guess our little girl is going to be 6'5 like her daddy!

What is self insemination?

Think... turkey baster. :D It's DIY artificial insemination.

Mostly, this is a useful technique for couples with sexual dysfunction (eg inability to consummate the marriage because of impotence or vaginismus); when the husband cannot perform sexual intercourse for any reason on the fertile days; or for single women or lesbians.

How is ultrasound generated?

Ultrasonic signals (or even sonic ones - ones we can hear) are generated by a device called a transducer. The transducer has a crystal driver that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy (and sound is mechanical energy) and vice versa because of piezoelectric effect. A crystal can be made to change shape (get a tiny bit longer or shorter) by electrical stimulation. And changing the shape of a crystal, squeezing it a bit, can cause it to generate an electrical signal. That's piezoelectric effect. It can be called a bi-directional process. Send an electrical signal to a transducer and it will convert the electrical energy (signal) into mechanical energy (sound). Because the process works in reverse, the transducer is used to send out a signal and then be used to listen for the return echo. All in ultrasound. That's sound that is above the range of human hearing. Human hearing is roughly 20 cycles per second (cps or Hertz) to 20,000 cps. Medical ultrasonic diagnostic transducers work at well in excess of 1,000,000 cps. Neither your dog nor any bats in the neighborhood can hear that.
One of the many ways is piezoelectric generation, a high frequency current is put across a certain type of crystal and it causes the crystal to oscillate.

Is a heart rate of 179 fast for 11 weeks fetal development and what could it mean?

Don't know for sure. We just had ours measured at 8 weeks 0 days, and it was 168. Web using Google seems to imply that fetal heart rate peaks at 9 weeks of development, and 179 isn't way too high. But you should do the search yourself. I used this search: heart rate week fetal OR fetus One source says: "Beginning at a rate near the mother's, at approximately 80-85 B/M at the start of the 5th week, the heart rate accelerates to a mean of 175 B/M (+/-20 = 2SD) at 9.2 LMP weeks. It then abruptly begins to decelerate. This increase is approximately 10 beats every 3 days until the early 9th week." Note that LMP = last missed period; meaning, the conventional measurement of gestational age. Another source says "Normal heart rate at 6 weeks is 90-113 bpm and at 9 weeks is 144-170 bpm." So...it's hard to say. Sounds like it's not way to high to me. BUT ASK YOUR DOCTOR.

Why do boxers hug sometimes during a match?

After the match, the boxers sometimes hug to show their appreciation for a good fight.

What appears to be "hugging" during the match is known as clenching. Boxing is an extremely demanding sport, and the boxers can sometimes tire very quickly, especially when taking a lot of punishment. By holding onto one's opponent, it gives the boxer a few seconds of rest, and their opponent will have trouble hitting them when they are clenched together.

What are the chances of having twins?

Only if twins run in your family. I am guessing the chances would be 1 in 100. Or if you take utility drugs you are bound to have twins.

What does it mean when an ultrasound does not show anything at 5 weeks?

External ultrasounds can only detect pregnancy when you are more than about 5-6 weeks wereas if you have an internel ultrasound they can detect pregnancy from as early as 4weeks. In answer to your question you are either not as far gone as originally thort and would have to have a internal ultrasound to dertimine/detect pregnancy or you are just not pregnant.

AnswerI'm suprised that they wouldn't tell you when you got it done. The fetus at that age is so small its very possible that you could not see it. Or you are not as far along as you thought and it was just a yolk sack.

How can I improve my chances of conceiving a baby girl?

You can't, really, without scientific intervention. The male's sperm determines whether or not the chromosomes turn into male, XY, or female, XX.
