What does the crank shaft sensor do?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Crankshaft position sensor, or (CKP) monitors the Crankshaft position and No#1 cylinder piston position while the engine is running. this information is sent to the engine's ECM. ( Electronic Control Module) the ECM then uses this information to calculate several operating parameters for engine performance but mostly it is used to operate the engine's Ignition system ( coil (s) and spark plugs). back in the day' you could replace your "points style distributor" for an "Electroinic-Ignition system" very much like todays MSD distributors. many of those used a Cam-sensor which essentially performed the same function. some used a Crank-sensor instead. basically:these sensors tell the ECM when to fire the spark plugs. before that it was all done with a set of "points" inside the distributor. hope this helps

What to do when you lose your VW Jetta key?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

1999.5 and newer Volkswagens: you will need proof of vehicle ownership (registration card with vin) to the VW dealer and have them cut you a key. If the key works but the engine will not run, you will have to get it towed to the dealer to have the key activated. It has an immobilizer system (antitheft)

1999 and older Volkswagens do not, you will need to remove the door handle to obtain the lock 4 digit code to have a key made.

See www.veedubkey.com for lost key services through the internet for all keys up to 2005.

How do you find and enter security code for radio in 2000 new beetle?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I own a v.w. beetle. Had to have the radio replaced in it. Brought it to the v.w. dealership. They had to call Germany to get the code for the radio. Sometimes it is written down in your owner's manuel. That's where my old one was before I put the new radio in. Did you know you can't even change the battery in the car without plugging it up to keep and electrical charge are you will not be able to start your car. There has to be a 12 volt going through it at all times. There is also a code for that to. that's v.w.'s for ya. We have to pay for all these problems.

How do you change a crank case sensor on a 96 S-10 2.2 liter?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

remove the plug unscrew the bolts and put back the way you remove it .

Depending on what car you have, the crank angle sensor is normally located behind your harmonic balancer, or somewhere close to the crank. To remove the harmonic balancer you'll first need to remove the drive belt then remove the bolts holding on the harmonic balancer. It won't usually come off easily so it'll need some persuasion with a few light taps from a hammer, or in severe cases a bearing puller. Once the balancer is removed access to the crank angle sensor is very easy. All you need to do is interchange the busted sensor for a new one.

Why would antifreeze leak from the cap?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Probably because the cap is worn out. They're cheap, so you might as well replace it. Look at where the seal touches the radiator while you're at it and make sure there's no crud interfering with making a good seal. In a modern car the fluid level goes all the way to the top of the radiator, and the overflo gets caught in the bottle, so if the seal isn't good it will leak more or less all the time, at least until you've lost so much coolant that the radiator is no longer full. The gasket is probably damaged or worn. Replace the cap and it should be ok. Caps are supposed to be able to typically hold 12 to 15 PSI, depending on the manufacturer. If you're building more pressure than that, you probably have a problem with the cooling system and will need to investigate further.

Same way you do when it's warm. Turn the key.

If it's a diesel (would be nice if you said what model and engine) and its starting hard, plug in the block heater for a few minutes before you try to start.

Where is the relay and fuse for the seat belt located on a 1993 mercury villager?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you are looking for a broken fuse on this problem, then you are gonna have more than just the belts not operating (dome lights, power windows and more.) The fuse compartment beside the parking brake release handle contains the fuse for the belts. Something probable is the Inertia switch having high resistance. It will keep both belts on the rear (B)pillar even if you open the doors. To check the inertia switch on the left side behind the cover (you can see a small red button)remove it and use a ohmeter to see if the resistance is close to zero. Try cycling it with a small shock it will open and the just push the red button to close it. Recheck the resistance if it was high.

Why won't my car start after not being used for 1 week?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Chance is your battery might be flat. Do you headlamps etc come on and stay on? Have you tried charging your battery? If you dont have a charger you can try bump starting it, by pushing it with a friend and dropping it into gear, or roll down a hill and try, normally in second. If you have an auto, you have to charge it.

If that works and you plan on leaving the car standing for a month again, get a friend to pop round and start it every week or disconnect the battery. Quite easy to do, just need a spanner and lie the cables to the side of the battery. When you are back just connect it up, might take a couple of turns but should start. Hope this helps.

To replace the radio antenna on the 1990 Jetta you simply unscrew it (counter-clockwise) and screw the new one clock-wise.

If you are replacing antenna with off the shelf product

You will probably have to remove the wheel, wheel well fender protector, to have access to the bolt for the antenna
