If a 2001 Cadillac DHS sometimes won\'t start, becomes idle or just dies it\'s probably a problem with the gear box.

there are four coils on rear valve cover each one runs 2 cylinders. auto parts stores can tell you the firing order, im not sure

The best thing to do is to go to any GM dealer and ask if they will print you out a wiring diagram. But they will need atleast your VIN number so they can have the correct RPO codes so they can identify the correct schematic diagram. Not all cars come with the same equipment such as heated seats and memory seats so in order to get the correct diagram they must have the RPO codes from your car.

There are two possible causes. One is lack of spark and the other is lack of fuel. You will need to determine which one you don't have. To check spark all you really need to do is remove one of the spark plug wires from a spark plug and using a plastic pair of pliers or something equivalent, have someone crank the engine and watch for spark. If there is no spark at the plug, you could have a few different things wrong like a crankshaft sensor bad. I am not sure what engine you have but I will assume that you have the 5.3 or 6.0L engine. These engines do not have a distributor. If you have a 5.7L it does have a distributor and a single ignition coil. If you have a single coil then you can remove the coil wire and check for spark at the coil in the same way that you did at the spark plug. To check fuel pressure you will need a fuel pressure gauge and it will hook to the schrader valve located on the passenger side of the intake manifold just below the engine cover. Has the fuel filter been replaced lately or atleast checked? If it is plugged that may be your problem. If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge you could remove the fuel filter and crank the engine to see if you have fuel coming out. If no fuel comes out you may have a bad fuel pump or no power to the fuel pump. Make sure to check the fuel pump fuse which will be located in the electrical junction block under the hood on the driver side. Also check the ECM "B" fuse. An electric fuel pump is good for about 100,000 miles give or take. If you have close to this mileage on your vehicle it is a safe bet that your fuel pump has gone out on you. you need a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar to fit the square hole in the spring loaded tensioner and release the tension on the belt so you can remove the old belt from the closest pully you can reach at the same time. Make sure you have a diagram of how it goes back on before you take it off. The tensioner is a pully affair located in the belt path and you find it by looking for the 1/2 inch square drive "hole". When you get the new belt on all the pullys except the last one you have to release the tension again with the 1/2 inch breaker bar while you slip the belt over the final pully. It helps to have a 2 foot water pipe on the breaker bar to make it easier to release the tension while you work the belt. A helper would be useful also.

could be as simple as burnt spark plugs i would think it would run worse with a burnt piston but if its not smoking or anything the pistons should be fine so i would start with the plugs

You can also have an internal leak as in a leaking head gasket. Have this repaired ASAP, or you may do serious damage to the engine.

There is no "inertia switch" like on the FORD's. The fuel pump is activated by a dual circuit... engine's computer (PCM) activates the fuel pump relay which in turn powers the fuel pump & after the engine's oil pressure reaches 4.5 lbs, the oil pressure switch also provides power to the fuel pump. Normally, the PCM will prime the fuel pump for about 3-4 seconds when the ignition key is cycled from "Off" to "RUN". The computer keeps the fuel pump relay on as long as there is a RPM signal going to the computer.

Totally different from the FORD concept where there is a "JAR" switch or inertial switch located in the trunk of most passenger cars & in the passenger's "kick panel" on most trucks. Here the switch is turned off in case of a violent "jolt" to the car ... like a rear end collision.

If the theft deterrent has be intiated on your vehicle the best bet is to if you have the key is to disconnect the battery for atleast 10 minutes so the BCM resets and then reconnect the battery and use your key. The vehicle should start. If the ignition has been busted either replace the ignition or get a steering column with a key from a junkyard. Or you can wire the theft deterrent to ground and cause a resistance which might work. You can not bypass the theft deterrent on your Cadillac. It can be the lock up on the torque converter not functioning properly. It can also be low of fluid. Check the transmission fluid level. If the fluid level is good, you need to seek professional help.
