The alternator is in the car for two purposes. One ... to charge the battery. Two ... to run anything and everything electrical within the car when it's running. So basically, the battery is only there to start the car and that's it, the alternator has nothing to do with the starting of the vehicle.
If the car won't start, it's probably NOT the alternator. It's a possible problem with the battery or within the starting system. It could be caused by something as simple as making sure the shifter is in the park position all the way. (automatic transmission only of course) If this is an automatic, you can also try placing the car in neutral but MAKE SURE YOU USE THE BRAKES OR PUT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON before and while starting it. If it starts in neutral but not in park, it's the neutral safety switch gone bad.
If the car is a manual, the clutch safety switch located (usually) above the clutch pedal may be the culprit.
Now ... there are many things in the starting system that can go wrong from a fuse, to a starter solenoid, a starter relay, the starter itself, the ignition switch, a bad connection somewhere, a broken wire or a security system within the car. This Is The Best Way To Find Your Problem. PLEASE NOTE ++++++++ If The Light Don`t Come On. Your Battery Is Probably Bad. In Fact Go Have The Battery Tested First !!!! Then Replace If It Is Weak Or Bad. If That Don`t Work Try The Things Above. HOPE THIS ISN`T TOO MANY THINGS. GOOD LUCK --Try look for a fuse. You need a new belt, it has nothing to do with the battery, but rather the new alternator. The belt is probably old, dry and cracked so it is slipping during the acceleration period due to the load from the engine.

NOTE: it is a little known fact that a weak or failing battery is a major contributor to premature alternator death. Any battery that is 4 years old is a prime candidate for replacement.

PROBABLY ISNT MUCH DIFFERENT THEN A 1995. GET YOURSELF A LONG 15MM RENCH AND LOSEN THE TOP BOLT OF THE ALTERNATOR YOU CAN SEE IT RIGHT BEHIND THE TIMEING BELT COVER. NOW JACK UP THE CAR , REMOVE THE TIRE AND CRAWL UNDERNEATH. LOSEN UP THE BOLT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE ALTERNATOR. HERE COMES THE FUN PART. ON THE BACK PART OF THE TOP ALTERNATOR BRACKET IS A TENSIONING BOLT, AND IF DODGE HASNT CHANGED THE SIZE ITS A 13MM. YOU HAVE TO GET YOUR ARM BACK HEHIND THERE AND WITH A 13MM ON A RATCHET WRENCH LOSEN THE TENSIONER UNTIL YOU CAN PUSH THE ALTERNATOR FORWARD ENOUGH TO GET THE BELT OFF OF THE CRANK SHAFT PULLY. REPLACE THE SAME WAY YOU TOOK IT OFF.

Two possibles. Either the battery needs to be replaced, or the stator is not charging. First check the battery with the engine off, should have 12. 2 volts or more, if under 12 volts, then charge and check again. If under 12 volts, then replace. If over 12 volts, run engine, check the battery volts, should have over 13 volts at idle, rev up, should get over 14 volts. If battery still shows only 12. 2 or so volts, then the stator in the engine has to be replaced.
