An alternator is an old term for electric generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy producing alternating current. Alternators are mainly used for recharging batteries and to power electrical loads of vehicles.

It uses a permanent magnet which is rotated by a crank. The spinning magnet is positioned so that its north and south poles passed by a piece of iron wrapped with wire. It was discovered that the spinning magnet produced a pulse of current in the wire each time a pole passed the coil. Furthermore, the north and south poles of the magnet induce currents in opposite directions. By adding a commutator, it is possible to convert the alternating current to direct current.

If the alternator is computer regulated it may not run with battery disconnected. The alt. may be good, but the wires to it are open/shorted.
Most alternators need a voltage present to operate. This is because the voltage is used to create the magnetic field used to generate power. If you are directly replacing another alternator, the wiring should already be correct for it. If you think that your alternator is not receiving power (for its field windings) then you should check for the presence of the voltage with a meter when the ignition switch is on. The proper place to check will depend on the vehicle, and some newer alternators will only apply the voltage when a start signal is recognized. This would make troubleshooting much more difficult.

NOTE: it is a little known fact that a weak or failing battery is a major contributor to premature alternator death. Any battery that is 4 years old is a prime candidate for replacement.

ON THE BACK PART OF THE TOP ALTERNATOR BRACKET IS A TENSIONING BOLT, AND IF DODGE HASNT CHANGED THE SIZE ITS A 13MM. YOU HAVE TO GET YOUR ARM BACK HEHIND THERE AND WITH A 13MM ON A RATCHET WRENCH LOSEN THE TENSIONER UNTIL YOU CAN PUSH THE ALTERNATOR FORWARD ENOUGH TO GET THE BELT OFF OF THE CRANK SHAFT PULLY. REPLACE THE SAME WAY YOU TOOK IT OFF.

Two possibles. Either the battery needs to be replaced, or the stator is not charging. First check the battery with the engine off, should have 12. 2 volts or more, if under 12 volts, then charge and check again. If under 12 volts, then replace. If over 12 volts, run engine, check the battery volts, should have over 13 volts at idle, rev up, should get over 14 volts. If battery still shows only 12. 2 or so volts, then the stator in the engine has to be replaced.

It will come out of the engine compartment through the top in the left rear corner as you are looking from the front. You will have to take a wiring harness loose and bend a little metal piece up that was holding the wiring harness. It's a tight fit but it will come out. You do not have to take out the pivot bolt just loosen it up and then it lifts straight up out of the bracket it slides through. I found that to be the hardest. If you remove the right front tire and the plastic housing in the wheel well you can get to the bracket easier.

You remove four bolts from alternator taking off all hoses and remembering where you took off bolt plates(small plates that screws go into). You then remove three bolts on passenger side of alternator. Take off drive belt. You will have to replace it. You will use the tension pulley to replace the belt. It takes a little force.

If Battery keeps draining overnight and it's not the alternator or battery?
If you are certain it is not a faulty battery or alternator problem, the next step is to find what is shorting out or drawing current with the ignition in the off position. Could be a number of things: Have you had aftermarket accessories installed (shift light/digital gauges/stereo/amplifier/car alarm/etc?) that would be where id start first, then use a simple circuit tester.
Disconnect the battery, clip a lead on the + battery wire, any circuit that is drawing current will make the tester light up when you short the circuit/wire under the dash using the probe..this will only show you what can pull current when the ignition is off
