Alternators

There is abolt on the bottom of the alternator that holds the alternator to the engine. There is another bolt and bracket on the top that adjusts the belt tension. There is a ground wire, power wire from the starter and a wire that connects to the dash light. There are also one or two belts depending on the year and model of the car.

The idler pulley is on a spring loaded arm. To release the tension, use a long breaker bar, or a long pipe on a box wrench. Use the proper size wrench or socket, and put it on the idler pulley bolt head. Rotate the idler arm assembly in a counter clock-wise direction and the tension will be released. Then you can remove the belt. Hint use rubber bands to keep the belt on the other pulleys while replacing the alternator. Joedi

i have an 87 wrangler with 4.2 carb motor, v-belt, and used 2 different style 1/4 thickness alternator adjustment brackets and a tranglular bracket piece from the junk yard. i used the holes where the comp used to mount. alignment of the belt wasnt to hard either. use the 2 adjusting brackets on top and trangular one on bottom left, facing engine. the adjustment brackets i mounted on top are on top are a 1/4 inch thick and , i mounted the single hole in the old comp. mounting holes front and back ,on the backside of old comp. mounting hoes, you need brckets that have an offset on the end where the single hole is. i think mine came off dodge pickup 360 engine alternator , hopefully you can get a rough idea of what i did never had any problems. it did take some patience playing with brackets to get it right, but didnt have to drill any holes, oh, the upper brackets are 5" long and have an offset on single hole end , and the bottom piece is 4 9/16" center to center kid of triangular shaped which helps add strenghth

What year and specific model? It matters. Most auto parts stores will have remanufactured alternators for around $100-120 minus the "core fee" that you get back if you turn in the old dead alternator.

If you're looking for something cheaper than that, I guess you could try a "you-pick-it" junkyard.

There are 3 positive diodes and 3 negative diodes. The alternator produces AC voltage in 3 phase. Almost all car manufacturers import and domestic use 6 diodes. Diodes can be defective as either "open" or "shorted". An open diode reduces capacity of an alternator while a shorted diode causes almost no charging.

If your battery has a DEAD CELL , the engine won't crank , none of the courtesy lights will work , even the door chime for the key in ignition with the drivers door open won't make a sound even with the alternator and voltage regulator working fine

The car will not start after driving for a period of time. The lights are very dim while the engine is running and get darker , or the battery light is on in the dashboard.

Is it possible that you hooked up some of the wires on the alternator reversed. An alternator has to be "exited" meaning that you need to put a little power in to it to get alot of power back out of it. If one of the wires you hooked to it was a "constant hot" (on all the time) and not a "keyed hot" (on with the key) the alternator itself can drain the battery. If you are sure this could not be it you're going to need to put a multimeter on the battery and pull and replace one fuse at a time until you find the drain. (It will stop drawing when you pull the right fuse) Be careful because the clock/radio is a constant drain but a very small. Save that fuse for the very last.

If the new fuse you are installing has a hole in one of the terminals, carefully check location, because the hole means it has a bolt going through it> You may have to unbolt fusebox(underhood right?) carefully tip it upside down, and remove bolt> probably a 10 mm socket required> .

The starter is located behind the motor on the side of the oil filter you can follow the negative cable of the batery and you l see two screws one of them holds the sterter an to take out the other you must rise the car and deconect the cables from the starter and also to take it out you need to take it out the oil filter because you gone a need space to bring down ijust chanche mine afew days ago

The flasher is in the fuse block. The fuse block is under the dash to the right of the steering column. It is a round can and simply plugs in.

Suggest replacing all the belts also. 1st belt, remove coolant res. loosen the pulley next to the res. then there is a tension bolt behind it. get under the car, the alternator is right there on the passenger side. possible under a small shield. loosen all the bolts on the alternator, then there is a tentioner on the alternator. loosen that, remove belt, then take out the rest of the bolts, along with the plug and the ground wire to the alternator. for the P/S belt, loosen the other pulley 14mm, and then the tention bolt is another 12mm.

Well, It could be your battery or alternator or both needs to be replaced but it could just be loose or corroded battery cables
