How I was able to do it was first loosen up the tensioner and then lift up the alternator. Its a 1/2" wrench to do this. Then go around the alternator and on top of the other gear and then get the bottom gear on last. sometimes the belt is really hard ot get on so you may have ot muscle it some. Then tighten it all back down.
That's certainly possible. The best way to diagnose a problem like that would be to go to one an auto parts retailer such as Auto Zone, Kragen or whomever is in your area. Most provide free ignition system diagnostics in hopes that you'll buy your parts from them. They should be able to detect an alternator problem, loose belt, bad tensioner, old, tired battery or whatever your problem might be. Then you can get the parts and repair it yourself.

Until an expert improves this answer, a layman's view will have to do. I drive both a '93 and an '89 F-150, and am not experienced with your newer model. However, the symptom you describe is generic in nature, and I suspect is the result of a drive belt which slips only at high rpm, allowing the alternator rpm to decrease, triggering the low voltage indicating "idiot" light to come on. As always, it is possibe that the cause could be from some other source, such as, possibly, a defect in the voltage regulating circuit which reduces the alternator output during periods of high rpm. Still, my first suspect is the slipping drive belt.

IF the "gen light" [charging system idiot light] is ON, then that indicates that more electricity is being taken out of the battery than the charging system is putting into the battery.
If that's the case, then over time the battery voltage will become less and less. At some point, the voltage to the primary winding inside the ignition coil(s) will get so low that the output [supposed to be very high voltage] to the distributor system and spark plugs will be reduced significantly.
When the voltage of the spark plugs is significantly reduced, then the spark is not "hot" enough to properly ignite the "richer" fuel/air mixture at higher throttle power settings, resulting in "loss of power" and sometimes "missing" [also known as misfiring.
you may need to go to your local shop and if they are equiped with one get them to attach there scanner to the vehicle and clear the codes for you.

You do not have to remove the driveshaft. Roll the alternator to the right side of vehicle. Disconnect the bracket holding a water pipe to the firewall and turn the alternater around 'til you can pull it through all the hoses up and out. Take your time to be sure not to damage the hoses. Disconnect what vacuum hoses you need to and remember where they go.
Remove the air intake housing and the alternator will come out between the firewall and the intake maifold. This will only work on the FI engines. To remove the alternator on a carburetor enhine you must remove the half shaft from the transmission and take it out the bottom or the car.
disconnect bottom of left front strut with front left jacked off ground. This extends strut and with a bracket removed that is attached to back of left side engine block (2 bolts--14mm) there's almost enough room to drop alternator through. Best to get a shop manual for this operation, if you have not replaced it before. Usually there is an "Idler Pulley" on many late model cars that is "spring loaded". By your decription I would think your starter has a "dead" spot in it, to double check this have someone turn the ignition key to start as you tap the bottom of the starter, if it turns over, shut off the engine (if it got started) try it a few more times, if it hits that dead spot again, replace the starter.

Then you remove the belt by putting a 3/8 drive rachet or breaker bar in the square hole on the tensioner (just under the roller) and pull it towards the firewall.

Remove the nut holding the power steering pump lines (10 millimeter) this is located on the back of the alternator close to the firewall (You will see the plastic clip holding the lines the nut is just below that clip).
Remove the nuts holding the bracing bars to the engine (near the valve cover).
Remove the two bolts holding the alternator (on the flanges). The lower bolt has a free wheeling nut on the back; you'll have to reach under and hold that nut.
You can lift out the alternator, but be aware of the lower bracing bar that may have to be loosened on the alternator to facilitate removal. Once the alternator is out you can easily remove the wiring from the rear.
Near the top of the engine is a tensioner assembly. The pully can be pushed back using a breaker-bar and the appropriate sized socket. Note the layout of the belt before removing it because there won't be much help if you can't figure out how to put it back. For the record, all GM vehicles since mid 50's have been 12 volt.

The belt tensioner pivots with spring tension against the back (smooth) side of the belt. The tensioner arn has a molded square hole in it - this hole takes the end of a 3/8" drive socket wrench, which you then use as a handle to give you leverage to go against the tensioner spring with one hand, while removing the belt with your other.
