The caliper piston is screwed in by using a tool that locks into the 2 slots. The left hand is screwed anti clockwise and the right hand is screwed clockwise. Make sure the bottom slot matches the raised section an the replacement pad when it is assembled.

Under the engine cover:

* Remove the 4 caps that cover the bolts on the engine covers.

* Remove first the cover over the intake manifold (2x 10mm bolts)

* Remove the oil filler cap

* Remove the main engine cover (2x 10mm bolts)

* Replace the oil filler cap (so you don't drop anything in there)

* You should now see the 6 ignition coils, make a note of the ground strap locations (should be 1 in the front and 1 in the back). Remove the cables first by lifting up the metal clips and then pulling away the cable.

* Remove the 12 bolts holding the 6 coils in place. The coils will lift out of place.

* Now would be a good time to check for oil. If you see oil where the spark plugs go it's time to change your valve cover gasket.

* Replace spark plugs. Torque spec is based on spark plug thread (one is for M cars one is for non-M cars, I am too lazy to look it up, here are both:

- Spark plugs with thread M12 x 1.25 = 23 Nm

- Spark plugs with thread M14 x 1.25 = 30 Nm

I believe the M14 plugs (larger) are for the M-cars but don't quote me on that. You should be able to find that by the spark plug specs,

These instructions are valid for M52 / M52TU / M54 / M56 / S52 / S50US engines, basically any BMW inline-6 engine from 1991 - 2005.

If you go to O'Reilys or AutoZone they will be happy to give you some prices. Also I have had to change brakes on my own car, and the price was not bad. It only took about an hour or less to change both front brakes and cost me less than fifty dollars.

It might be necessary to remove the outer nut and bearing to remove the drum. If it's just rusted on you'll need some WD 40 to get started and a BFH, or big freakin hammer. Bang the drum in the direction of the other side of the car, right at the perimeter of the drum while spinning it. The object is to ring it like a bell and vibrate the rust loose, works every time.

i had a 99 grand am and i had to remove the drum by banging it with a hammer, sometimes you can get to the star adjuster but for me it was just easier to pound it off

Pads about 30.00, Rotors anywhere from 85.00-125 ea. turn rotors-40.00 (approx) + labor.

Jut pull of drum if not 4 wd, make sure parking brake off and you may have to tap it a couple times.

Sounds like you need to replace your Calipers at at least one of them if both are not heating up. The piton in the caniper is likely siezed common problem on any vehicle.

Start at the longest line (R-R) and work towards the shortest (L-F) Attach a flexible hose the the bleeder screw and the other end into a container filled with clean brake fluid Have an assistant step on brake pedal approx. 2/3 down and open bleeder screw Observe hose in container for air bubbles close bleeder screw and repeat process until no air bubbles are observed then move to next wheel. MAKE SURE MASTER CYLINDER DOES NOT GO EMPTY DURING THIS PROCEDURE

Yes. Just check on line if there is a kit for your car, it does involves some work.

Also remember rear brakes do only small fraction of over all braking, so ask yourself if it is rally worth it.

1) Cheap pads. Replace with quieter ones.

2) Incorrect pads or rotors, replace with correct ones.

3) You screwed it up and something is in the wrong place.

4) It only makes the noise during the first three or four stops after you start driving. Consider putting semi-metallic pads on in place of NAO/ceramic types.

5) You are talking about rear disc brakes on a car with drum-type parking brakes. One or more of the new rotors has been improperly machined during manufacturing and the drum portion rubs the backing plate. Ask a repair facility or machine shop to remove a bit of metal from the rotor at that location.

6) You had an ID-ten-T error and put one or more pads on backwards with the metal backing in contact with the rotor.

7) You decided to rotate the tires while you had the wheels off. Front and rear wheels are not the same on some vehicles.

8) Something else.

There should be a schematic of the fuseboard printed on a sticker (usually found stuck on the inside of the fusebox flap or cover). Sometimes it is embossed there in the plastic of the flap / cover instead. The fuse you are looking for should be indicated by an image of a bulb next to that of an exclamation mark in a circle. Always be sure to replace any fuse with one of the same number or colour.

In very general terms, you remove the caliper from knuckle, remove the old pads, scrub the slider surface and bolts clean and then re-assemble it with new pads.

When asking important technical questions like this , please always state the vehicle make, model and year. - You will get a much better and more specific answer. - I, for one, am NOT prepared to waffle about such a vital concern on your car.
