Check Engine Light

if the code wasnt cleared by either disconnecting the battery or clearing it with a scan tool then it could take awhile. it will turn off eventually. if you just put a sensor in it without proper diagnosis, there is most likely a different problem that turned the light on in the first place, have the computer scanned and diagnose the problem before replacing parts. it will cost less in the long run. the v6 does have an airflow sensor. its called a "mass" airflow sensor. its located in the air cleaner box. (dont replace it unless properly diagnosed!)

I don't know about the 2000 year model directly but the 1996 is similar I am sure.

To reset the "check engine" light, find the EFI fuse (probably under the hood in the fusebox on the driver's side) and with the engine off, remove it for one minute minimum. Replace the fuse and the "check engine" light should be reset.

There are many reasons for that check engine light. You could go to dealership. Or you could simply disconnect battery and reconnect after 3 minutes.

the wrench symbol is there to symbolize "service" because its a "service key" more commonly referred too as a valet key. the point in the key is that you can use your switchblade key to lock your valuables or anythign else you don't want seen or messed w/ in the glove box or trunk and then lock them the service key will not allow access to those areas.

This problem is more than likely caused by a faulty ignition coil assy. Your local autoparts store should be able to to read the fault code that caused the service engine soon light. After checking you coils, you may want to change your sparkplugs. My 99 F150 did the same. I had 2 bad sparkplugs. A broken muffler baffle can also cause this symptom. this can usually be confirmed by shaking the COOL muffler by hand. I'll bet the symptom appeared after an especially hard accelleration and slow down whatever the ultimate defect is.

The check engine/service engine light should come on as soon as the ignition is turned to the on position without starting the engine. If it does not, then the bulb is either blown or has been removed.

remove the pos battry cable leave it off for about a minute put it back on light should go out but if you car troblue it will come back on in a day or two

Some fault codes which cause the warning light to come on will clear themselves after a certain number of ignition sequences if the fault is no longer occurring. Give it a week or two and the light may clear. Failing that buy a code reader on eBay for about £20. You'll need a OBD II reader. You can clear the codes with it if you want.

Of course you should fix the cause of the fault as well!

May not be so simple . I bought such a reader and it does not give any info .Matiz seems to be a bit of a one off .tread carefully or you will be £20+ worse off and non the wiser. If you do or have cracked it please post type of scanner used.

Burnt out bulb, or the problem you are having is caused by an engine component that is not being monitored by the computer and so it cannot trip the trouble light.

If your check engine light is flashing , an engine cylinder misfire has been detected

I dont know! I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee XJ laredo, I've done alot of work to it, know alot about cars, and I've even pulled the faceplate off of the "information center" to the left of the steering wheel/speedometer. Hold that faceplate up to a light, and it only reveals: "Brake" "<seat belt symbol>" "Full Time" "<up arrow symbol>" "Part Time" "Low Washer" "Emiss Maint" and "Check Antilock".

You have to take out the car's battery to reboot the car's computer.

If not installed properly check engine light will illuminate

The check gages light on the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am means to check temperature, low oil possibly, water. These are to be kept maintained for the car to run properly.

Replace the vent valve. Repair open, short, or resistance problem in the control circuit. Repair an open, or short, or resistance problem in the power circuit, or replace the PCM.

Try to disconnect the + battery terminal for about 20 min the reconnect it. Sometime that'll get it to go off for at least a little while. Eventually it'll come back on.

If the same code returned you need to check for causes for a lean condition. ie: low fuel pressure, improper airflow, misfire, faulty sensor,...... If a different code, diagnose it.

The check engine light ALWAYS means that the computer has detected a "fault". Rather than have a special light for every conceivable problem that might EVER come up with your engine, the check engine light is supposed to warn you to read the codes that the computer has detected.

Even if the light goes off there should be a "stored code", meaning that there should still be something in the computer. If not, have the codes checked when the engine is cold, see what you can find.

96 is when obd 2 started but most manuf. had early version. the plug usually determined between 1 and 2. in extremely rare cases. gm. they might have a 2 conncector but 1 codes. just try both 1 and 2 with your scanner. you must have a scanner!!! There are no "correct" codes for Control modules.. unless you count the "1..1" {system pass} for the EEC-IV. Codes indicate a fault or error observed, either in real time or in running history. All TBird 4.6L (94 up) and 96-97 3.8L are EEC-V OBD-II, the others are all EEC-IV. There are actually two sets of codes relating to OBD-II, Standard/generic and MFR specific. here's a Ford -specific list: http://www.troublecodes.net/Ford/eec-vobd2.shtml Note this list: http://www.obdii.com/codes.html Ford is Mfr "1" thus you would put a 1 in the first digit spot but the meaning is a little less specific in some areas. I assume you already know you dont actually NEED a scanner, though they are a good idea if you do your own maintenance... Autozone and several other parts stores will read the codes out for free. Insist, however, on getting the actual code and not just their definition of the code.

A little picture of an "engine" to the left of the speedometer. Turn on the ignition without starting the car and the light should appear. If it does not, the bulb is burnt out or has been removed.
