Depending on the year, use either an OBD1 or OBD2 code scanner. You can borrow, rent or buy a code scanner from most auto parts retailers.

With my Forenza , Sometimes when backing the check engine light will come on and stay on ,and the car runs rough as it is low on power . After Turing it on and off a few times , the check engine light will turn off and the car will run normal . What's the cause of this .

I just had the same issue. Cost me $40.00 to find out my gas cap wasnt clicked all the way. He also said that after the error arises, simply closing the gas until it clicked may not have removed the error code from the computer. Not sure how, but you might have to reset the computer, maybe just pull the battery? Sean

That is a wide open question. I take it someone told you this was the code stored in your car's computer and your MIL or Check Engine light is on. This code means that, for some reason, the vent solenoid (located under the car near or on the emissions canister) is not working when it should. It could be a bad solenoid, the wiring to it, or even a problem with the computer itself. To avoid throwing money at it by changing parts that may not be bad, have a qualified tech check it out. The check engine light is on because the ECU (computer) has detected a problem with the emissions system. Have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scanner to retrieve the code that has been set. This code will help you determine what the problem is.

There are pages and pages and items that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked for codes with a scan tool. After repair light can be shut off with scan tool.

Engine management light

It is showing there is a problem with the engine management system

P0449 says that the PCM is not seeing the voltage potential it wants to see when the vent valve is off or commanded on. I would suspect it is the Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) Canister Vent Solenoid near or on top of the gas tank is bad. To make sure check the voltage at the pink wire. It should be around 12 volts. If it is low, it may be bad wiring or the PCM, but not likely. if you have 12 volts suspect the solenoid.
