CHECK FUEL CAP, TIGHTEN FUEL CAP MESSAGES

This article applies to 05-06 Accords, 06 Civics, 05-06 CRV's 05-06 Elements, 05-06 Odysseys, 05-06 Pilots, 06 Ridgelines and 06 S2000s.

"If a vehicle's fuel fill cap is loose or missing, and the ECM/PCM detects an EVAP system leak when it runs the EVAP monitor, the CHECK FUEL CAP message appears on the information display when the engine is started. A temporary DTC is also stored in the ECM/PCM's memory. If this happens, there's really no need for the owner to bring the vehicle in for service. All he or she has to do is shut off the engine and make sure the fuel fill cap is in place and it's properly tightened.

Although the owner can cycle the message from the display with the reset button, the temporary DTC that's setting the message is still there. This means the message never really goes away. It can be cycled back with the reset button and it comes on again if the ignition switch is cycled or the engine is restarted. This message keeps coming back until the EVAP monitor runs again and it finds no EVAP system leak. This could take several days, even weeks, depending on how often the vehicle is driven.

If, when the next EVAP monitor runs, the cap wasn't tightened or there's another EVAP system leak detected, the MIL comes on and the message goes off. A permanent DTC is now stored in the ECM/PCM's memory. If the owner now tightens the cap, the MIL should go off after the next EVAP monitor run, yet this could still take days or weeks. If the MIL is still on after that monitor run, then it's time to bring the vehicle in for service.

If the vehicle comes into your shop with the fuel cap messaage or the MIL on. make sure the fuel fill cap is in place and properly tightened. Record the DTC, then clear it with the HDS and run the EVAP system function test. If there's still a problem, press on with normal troubleshooting."

On a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis , 4.6 liter V8 engine :

Resent?? Trust me.. it's easy.. we all resent the check engine light.. lol!!

However.. asumming you meant "reSET" the light.. you need to use a trouble code reader that has the capability to "erase" trouble codes once it reads them. You can purchase these online or at most any auto parts store starting at about $69.00 up to $400.00. For a 2000 model Celica, you will need one that is "OBD2"(I recommend the Innova 3100 ... $88.00 on Amazon.com).

BE ADVISED... simply erasing the code and resetting the light does NOT fix the problem of why it came on in the first place and there is a 99.99% chance that the light will come back on within a few miles of driving until the cause of the light coming on is resolved.

If you mean the brake lights are staying on, then the switch at thte pedal is sticking. Could be dirty or need adjusted. Switch is under dash at the pedal.

You may have to repeat this several times until you accomplish the task. Select the odometer total miles with the trip reset switch. Turn off ignition and then turn on again depressing the reset switch and holding it until the maint light begins blinking. Continue pressing on the switch until the maint light goes out.

That depends on the year make and model. Some codes require a self test to pass three times in a row, which can take weeks depending on driving habits.

The check engine light means there is a problem with the emission systems on the vehicle. The service engine light means that a regular schedule service is needed. Most of the time this means you need an oil/filter change.

you can either purchase a computer programmer ($200-$350+) that will allow you to check and clear codes as well as adjust computer settings for maximum performance or take the vehicle to most auto parts stores that can check the codes for free.

All these codes are faulty Circuit codes. So more likly a bad wire, fuse or computer than all the sensors.

Looking at the list I am going to make a guesses starting from most to least likely:

1stThere is a problem with a damaged or broken wiring harnes at the computer. Get a wiring diagram and prove the wiring is good on all the wires to all the sensors on the list

The ECM that runs all this stuff is bad.. Prove the sensors are not bad before replacing an expensive computer.

Next: All these sensors are faulty, crash or used parts or vandalized?

Try disconnecting the negative battery cable for 5 minutes. If that does not work you will need to use an OBD2 scan tool to reset it.

Could be anything but Check the oil dip stick. If that's ok drive to a VW garage and their sofware will give more details.

If a coil (in a coil-pack arrangement) is bad then the engine is probably misfiring on two cylinders.

You can purchase plastic pliers that are designed specifically for pulling sparkplug wires while the engine is running.

Start the engine, pull one plug wire from the coil pack using the plastic pliers. (don't use metal, you'll get a shock that will change your attitude) Go through the plug wires until you find one that DOESN'T make the engine run worse when you pull the wire. To verify that THAT is the bad coil, pull the OTHER wire and see if it doesn't affect the way the engine is running.

Remove the battery ground cable for about 5 mins. then put it back on.

Now there is a reason it came on in the first place, If you don't repair the problem it will just come back on again. You need to have the engine scaned with an engine scanner to see what the problem is.

Trouble code P0783 means: A/T 3-4 Shift Solenoid - No RPM Drop At Lockup

The service engine soon light on a 2002 Altima 3.5SE means you need to have some sensors replaced. Depending on when your car was built, it may have 2 or 3 recalls. The major recalls are for a crank shaft sensor and two cam shaft sensors. You wouldn't expect a 'service engine light' to trip on a 2002 model, but this is common to new model year vehicles. The light on my '02 Altima 3.5SE went on last week with only 28k miles. The dealer replaced the sensors and found the light was tripped more than likely from the cam shaft sensors, since a problem with the crank shaft sensor should normally prevent your engine form starting. Get this recall/warranty service done soon. I noticed poor gas mileage and slower acceleration. Cam sensor could cause slight misfires which could bring up your fuel consuption. Pull the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self test the computer runs the car through, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. Therefore, another problem may exist.
