Cold and Flu

Questions and answers about the "Common Cold"; symptoms in the upper respiratory tract like sneezing, scratchy throat, and runny nose, but adults don't typically have fevers. Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. Also questions about the seasonal flu, also called "regular flu", caused mostly by Type A and Type B Influenza viruses. Flu starts with similar symptoms as a cold only it hits faster and harder and usually includes fever in adults. Although the "stomach flu" is a common term, it is not a real diagnosis. The proper medical term for stomach flu is gastroenteritis (an intestinal disease, sometimes viral but also bacterial), it is often mistaken for influenza because the flu can sometimes include vomiting and diarrhea.

How do you cure catarrh?

Catarrh is an old term used to refer to the symptoms of inflammation and production of increased thick phlegm and mucus in the nose and airways; a typical symptom of the common cold and infections of the sinuses, tonsils, adenoids or middle ear. The word is from the Greek word meaning "to flow". It is rarely heard today in modern medicine terminology.

The cure depends upon the cause of this symptom. If caused by a virus like a cold or the flu, then it is treated as those conditions are (see related questions in the related question section). If caused by infections of the sinuses, bronchitis, or other bacterial infections of the nose, sinuses and air passages, then the cure is antibiotic treatment.

If you have a cold can you smoke?

Sure you can. But it won't help you get better. That is not to say it will make it worse. It's hard to tell if the negative effects of smoking will affect the ability of the body to shake off a rhinovirus.

Anyone who smokes, even a few times a day, has "bigger fish to fry" as regards health issues. There is almost no one who currently smokes who could do more to improve their physical health immediately and in the long term than to quit smoking. Almost no one. And it really doesn't matter too much if you smoke while you have a cold. Smoking may slightly inhibit the mechanisms the body uses to rid itself of a cold. Here we are in paragraph two, and no, we're not going to beat you up with the nasty statistics of smoking and what it does to you. You already know. Instead we'll make the best pitch we can in this forum, and appeal to your logic. You already know smoking is bad for you and that it would be good (better) for you and everyone around you if you quit. Think about yourself as a non-smoker. Visualize it. Embrace the vision. And go for it. Best of luck

Is it safe to get a flu shot before going on a cruise?

A healthy adult who has not had prior problems with flu vaccinations, such as allergic reactions or Guillain-Barre Syndrome, should be free of any mild side effects within a few days of the immunization. Most of those effects are typically local at the site of injection although some people can have mild systemic effects such as mild fever, aches and fatigue. Try to plan ahead, if possible, so that the trip will not start until 3 or so days after the vaccination to be most assured that you will be feeling your best during the cruise.

What are the risk factors for the common cold?

Although it is not true that getting wet or being in a draft causes a cold (a person has to come in contact with the virus to catch a cold), certain conditions may lead to increased susceptibility.

How long was the Spanish Flu?

The Spanish Flu lasted approximately one year in 1918 - 1919. It was a very deadly pandemic during WW1 and is estimated to have killed between 25 and 50 million people world wide in that short time period, perhaps the worst human infectious disease toll in all of recorded history. The plague in the middle ages killed 8 to 13 million, for comparison. It may have influenced the outcome of some battles in WWI since it was taking a heavy toll on military men from all parts of the world.

Interestingly the French called that flu the German Flu while it was called the French Flu in Germany. The only reason it is called the Spanish Flu is that it became world news when first reported widely in Spanish newspapers (that were some of the only papers that continued printing, publishing and distributing internationally during WWI.) It is believed that this pandemic probably actually originated in the US and spread globally by soldiers moving between the home front and foreign countries during the war.

Can you get ill from being in a cold swimming pool then going out side in the rain?

If the pool is extremely cold then its so much possible for you to get ailments like flu, pneumonia. This also happens when one stays out in the rain. So never assume this fact.

Everytime I go in a hot tub or swimming pool it feels like I have the flu the next day I get a fever I sweat yet I feel freezing my body aches can't get out of bed for a whole day what is up?

Did you drink alcohol before you got in? That will do it right there. If it's not that then the water is probably infected with feces, urine and bacterium which could also cause you to get sick.

Also, the water could be too hot or you are in the hot tub/spa too long. Max temp should be 104 degrees. Females: are you pregnant. Not a good idea to be in the spa. Get a physical. There could be other problems with your system. Inhaling the vapors generated by the heated spa will make you sick if in fact the water is an unsanitary, cloudy, uncirculated swamp. The water should sparkle and be crystal clear. Any form of cloudy water is unsafe to be in. People have become very sick from fairly well maintained spas and there are several ailments that can be permanent that you can contract from those spa where the chlorine levels are not maintained.

I have good oil pressure 50 psi when my 1989 350 is cold but when it reaches operating temp it decreases to about 10 to 15 psi but it jumps up to about 30 or 40 when accelerating.it has 499 miles why?

Remove oil sending unit and replace with a manual gauge to check oil pressure.

Could be low oil pressure due to excessive engine wear (bearings) or a weak oil pump

While I agree with the above, a simple start would be to use a thicker oil, up to and including a diesel. It will help to increase the psi given how old the engine is.

Why is there a delay between the time of infection and the first appearance of antibodies in the blood?

The human immune system is an incredibly complex and effective disease fighter/modifier. It is constantly protecting you 24/7. The reason it takes time for the system to respond to an infection is because of the way the system works. When a potentially harmful and new or sufficiently different bacteria or virus invades the body, this triggers a complex response. The short of this is that certain types of white blood cells are 'alerted' of these invaders, at which time they start a process which leads to the manufacturing of antibodies. Lymph nodes are also involved in this process. As with any 'chain of events' process, this takes time. For instance, in the common cold, antibodies are being produced usually within 24-48 hrs, but it takes several more days for the antibodies to start effectively reducing the viral infection. This is why colds last 7-10 days. One other thing about antibodies. When you receive an immunization- a flu shot or tetanus shot for instance, it generally takes about 2 weeks for your immune system to be fully effective. Of course, this can vary from person to person- some will be protected a little sooner, some a little later.

Does hunting help prevent flu in the area?

Likely only if you are hunting people who have the flu. Human influenza is caused by viruses passed from person to person, either directly or indirectly, from exposure to the viruses involved in the infection of the other person. There are some (more rare) flu viruses that can be passed from animals to humans, but they more typically infect domesticated animals that aren't subject to legal hunting.

To prevent flu in an area, the safest and best plan is to have an annual seasonal flu vaccination to prevent infection that you could pass on to others who are not vaccinated or who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.

My 1999 Toyota tacoma 4-cylinder runs rough and drops power when stating from a stop light Worse when cold?

Hi!

i had the same problem with my 2000 2.7L tacoma prerunner.

it seems like a common problem with this engine. burned valves and valve guides. i had 8 valves replaced and 6 valve guides. a valve job basically.

if you know how to take the engine apart. all you need is to give your engine a valve job. take it to the machine shop with the new parts. and have them machine it to specs.

goodluck!

What colds can you catch from climbing mountains?

Only the type of cold that you feel from low temperatures. You can not catch the infectious disease called the common cold from climbing mountains or from being cold. The common cold is caused by viruses that you catch from other people, it has nothing to do with cold weather. Check out the related questions in the related questions section for more about this long held belief/myth that you catch a cold from being in the cold. It is just a myth from before people knew about viruses.

Can driniking alcohol while you have a cold make it worse?

It depends. One or two beers or small glasses of wine won't hurt and in fact may have a slight benefit since you'll be more relaxed. More than that starts causing harm.
