Why is there less daylight in the fall?

The Earth is tilted on its axis at 23.5 degrees in respect to the sun. The Earth orbits the sun approximately every 365 days, otherwise known as a year. With the exception of the vernal and autumnal equinoxes (first day of spring and first day of fall) one of the Earth's hemispheres will be tilted towards the sun and the other away from the sun. It is because of this tilt that each hemisphere will receive more or less sun during each season. Say you went to a far northern Arctic region of the Earth during the fall and winter; You wouldn't see any sun for weeks at a time because the North Pole is tilted towards the darkness of space and away from the sun. If you were there in the spring and summer the sun would remain above the horizon 24 hours a day and there would be no night. If you live at or near the equator, there is very little seasonal variation with the length of the day and you can expect about 12 hours day/12 hours night during the entire year. Most people live somewhere in between so there will always be day and night but as you know during fall and winter the days are much shorter than during spring and summer. Also, you will find the sun is much lower in the sky during fall and winter and much higher in the sky during spring and summer. This again is because of the Earth's tilt.

You take your birth control pill everyday at 8 am but when Daylight Saving Time comes around in the fall should you start taking it at 7 so it is technically the same time everyday?

Birth control pills build up a specific level of medication in your system. As long as you take it sometime in the morning, do it whenever it's convenient for you. As long as you don't completely miss it all together, you're good.

Why does Arizona not have Daylight Saving Time?

When Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1966, Arizona tried observing daylight savings for a year and decided to not observe it after much negative reaction. They have never observed daylight savings since.

Think about it: if you were in the desert, the last thing you would want is extra daylight. Because of the hot climate, adding an extra hour of daylight would cause more of an energy crunch with AC working longer and harder. ( This part of the answer is retarded cause you are just changing the time, not magically moving the sun to make the daylight longer. The days are gonna be longer in summertime because the earth has tilted on its axis and we are receiving more light and you are gonna use the same amount of energy anyway. DST is just a way for big businesses to capitalize on the more sunlight during these months, Arizona just realized this was BS and refused to comply)

Arizona is on Mountain Standard Time (MST) year-round. The only exception in Arizona is the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, which does observe Daylight Saving Time.

Can't change time on the clock on a 1990 Corolla?

If you are unable to change the time on the clock of your 1990 Corolla, it may be due to a malfunction in the clock itself. You can try checking the fuse related to the clock, resetting the clock by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, or seeking assistance from a professional car mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue.

Does the novel War and Peace use dates from the Julian Calendar?

Yes.

For exampe, chapter 19 begins:

"On the twenty-fourth of August the battle of the Shevardino Redoubt was fought, on the twenty-fifth not a shot was fired by either side, and on the twenty-sixth the battle of Borodino itself took place."

But, the Battle of Borodino was fought on 7 September 1812.

This discrepancy is resolved if Tolstoy uses Julian dates:

26 Aug 1812 (Julian) = 7 Sep 1812 (Gregorian)

When the clocks go forward for Daylight Saving Time why does time not catch up with Spain who are one hour in front as the clocks there do not move?

Depending on where you live, observance of Daylight Savings Time is handled either on a local, state, or national basis. The EU does not follow American practice for DST so their time change occurs on a different date than ours. Every spring and fall there are a few weeks when one place has made the changeover but the other has not, so they're out of sync. Once both have made the changeover, time differences are back to "normal". Check out places like Arizona, where local citizens voted not to observe DST at all. Major parts of the state remain on standard time all year. However, some individual towns, U.S. parklands, and the autonomous Indian Nations do observe DST, so as you drive across the state you can end up resetting your watch every 50 or 100 miles!!!

How did the Daylight Saving Time phrase 'spring forward fall back' originate?

Daylight Saving Time has been used in the U.S. and in many European countries since World War I. At that time, in an effort to conserve fuel needed to produce electric power, Germany and Austria took time by the forelock, and began saving daylight at 11:00 p.m. on April 30, 1916, by advancing the hands of the clock one hour until the following October. Other countries immediately adopted this 1916 action: Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey, and Tasmania. Nova Scotia and Manitoba adopted it as well, with Britain following suit three weeks later, on May 21, 1916. In 1917, Australia and Newfoundland began saving daylight.

The plan was not formally adopted in the U.S. until 1918. 'An Act to preserve daylight and provide standard time for the United States' was enacted on March 19, 1918.

Why do crime rates drop during Daylight Saving Time?

Some studies suggest that more daylight hours during Daylight Saving Time may deter criminal activity by increasing natural surveillance and visibility in public spaces. Additionally, people may be more active and engaged in outdoor activities during longer daylight hours, reducing opportunities for criminal behavior.

How was the Berlin Opera affected by Daylight Saving Time in 1916?

Germany was the first country to institute Daylight Saving Time during WWI and the Berlin opera house was one of the first institutions affected by these changes. On April 30, 1916 the Berlin Opera, changed its regularly scheduled performance of Die Meistersinger to an hour earlier than usual. This allowed members of the audience to be able to catch their customary trains home at the end of the performance. All trains scheduled to depart between 11:00 p.m. and midnight were subsequently an hour behind schedule when the time changed from 11:00 p.m. to midnight, and so left as soon as possible. Trains are still affected to this day and if you are planning to travel with Amtrak and are unfourtunate enough to be on the tracks during the time change this fall your train will sit on the tracks for an hour as to not leave the next stop to early.

How did Daylight Saving Time affect the Vietnam War draft?

A man, born just after 12:00 a.m. DST, was able to circumvent the Vietnam War draft by using a daylight saving time loophole. When drafted, he argued that standard time, not DST, was the official time for recording births in his state of Delaware in the year of his birth. Thus, under official standard time he was actually born on the previous day—and that day had a much higher draft lottery number, allowing him to avoid the draft.

How does Daylight Saving Time save energy?

Having more hours of daylight is supposed to reduce the number of hours lights are turned on each evening, but that saves no energy. It only wastes energy because Daylight Saving Time does not bring more daylight. People have to wake up to a darker sky and fiddle with electricity if they cannot see.actually daylight saving time was started during a war so there could be more light to battle in

You are right in that it brings no more daylight. The "a war" was actually World War Two. Britain introduced what in fact we now call British Summer Time to help farmers particularly by making better use of the available daylight, but the belief grew that it made it harder for the Luftwaffe to bomb British cities. It didn't of course because the numbers of hours of light and dark do not change, only our clock reference with respect to longitude-determined solar noon. The bombers needed only to re-schedule their raids. Similarly with land and sea action - the effect of day or night on fighting was down to lengths of either, NOT to clock time.

'

Its only practical use is in moving the working day so we can use the evenings more effectively, but it comes with a cost especially the further North you live. Each time the clock is moved forwards or backwards, our bodies' internal natural clocks are temporarily put out of sync with the daylight they need for normal calibration, and the clock changes are marked by a short spike in traffic and other accidents, and in heart attacks and strokes. Effectively we all suffer from something akin to "jet lag". Night-shift workers are similarly but more seriously affected.

'

A peculiar myth common in Britain is that each change from GMT to BST or back gains or loses an hour in bed. It doesn't really, unless perhaps you change the clocks before going to bed, then set the alarm. If you let your body decide correctly, it will sleep and wake nocturnally and as and when physiology decides, but most of us now live to very artificial day/night arhythms that taken to sleep-deprivation extremes (common particularly among young people fixated on the Internet) are bad for us! The change is always set officially at 2am on a Sunday morning to cause the least disruption, but it's up to individuals to decide when they change their own time-pieces.

How much money are the 2007 changes in Daylight Saving Time costing Americans?

What does Daylight Saving Time have to do with smoke detectors?

Fire safety officials encourage people to use the two annual clock shifts as a reminder to check the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. This is especially important in fall, just before the heating, candle, and fireplace season causes an increase in home fires.

Does Daylight Saving Time change the name of standard time zones?

DST and Time ZonesYes, time zone names typically change when DST is observed.

American English replaces "standard time" with "daylight time": for example, Pacific Standard Time (PST) becomes Pacific Daylight Time (PDT).

The timezones themselves don't change ... The Pacific Timezone, for example, remains even when the clocks there are at PST+1.

The name "Summer Time" is far more popular around the world than the name "Daylight Saving Time" for the semiannual clock adjustments. Countries that use that name add the word "Summer" before the word "Time" to differentiate between their two time offsets. For example, Central European Time (UTC+1) becomes Central European Summer Time (UTC+2), and Brasilia Time (UTC-3) becomes Brasilia Summer Time (UTC-2).

Places where the government has opted to stay on their Summer Time offset year-'round (including Russia and the Falkland Islands) were not included here.

Some of the science stations in Antarctica adjust for Summer Time every year, not because there is any real benefit in the practice that close to one of the poles, but to stay in sync with their suppliers. Two such stations that I know of are New Zealand's McMurdo Station, which follows New Zealand's Summer Time schedule, and the United States' Palmer Station, which follows Chile's Summer Time schedule.

In almost all of the places where Summer Time is observed, clocks are advanced one hour in the spring or late winter and turned back one hour in the fall or late summer WITH TWO EXCEPTIONS:

* The clocks on Lord Howe Island are advanced a half hour for Summer Time. Although there have been other places with unique Summer Time offsets, including 20 minutes and 2 hours, Lord Howe Island is the only place that is using a Summer Time offset other than one hour currently.

The clocks in Morocco are being adjusted four times per year instead of twice. In addition to the spring and fall adjustments, Summer Time is suspended during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Why are computer problems caused by the changes in Daylight Saving Time?

The change to Daylight Saving Time should not cause any problems with your computer, although if you don't have your settings set to adjust for DST, you will have to manually reset the time. You can set your computer to automatically adjust to DST by double-clicking on the time in the lower right-hand corner of your screen, selecting "Time Zone" and checking "automatically adjust clock...." in the window that appears.

Which law or regulation is responsible for the 2007 change in Daylight Saving Time?

The law is the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Some believe they should have left well enough alone because this has caused many more problems than they anticipated. Example: Some machines such as MRIs, etc., have to be regulated and this will cause a few days lost which is extremely important to the ever-growing waiting list for patients. Others believe it is a good change because the amount of energy saved by the change is a suprisingly significant amount. If the environment and reducing our dependance on foreign oil is important to you than this change may be worth the initial headaches.

How do you change the clock on a 1995 Geo Metro?

In my 1995 Metro there is no clock, other than the one that is in the stereo. If the stereo is bad, just replace it. You will need a new stereo, a wiring harness if you don't want to hack up the old factory harness, and a install kit to make the stereo fit in the hole if the old stereo is factory. Then just follow instructions included with these parts.
