The Hoffman School, located in what seemed to have been a private mansion, was my first school. I started kindergarten there, and attended until the year of the Great Depression, after which I went to a public school in Washington Heights, where I lived. I have wonderful memories of the school, and will be happy to share them with anyone interested.
What are facts about Alabama in the 1930's?
The Jewish people in England began to migrate to Alabama by boat and donkey. They did so because Hitler was beginning to come out - he was going to kill all of the Jews. The black to white ratio at this time was about 4/10. Whites ruled, and the Jews - along with the blacks - were ridiculed and sent into slavery. The stock market boosted, then plumetted, leading the Jews to kill a lot of the blacks, and the blacks to kill a lot of the whites. The KKK was then introduced and the KKK began killing off all of the little black babies without any say of the Jews. One Jew named Heimlen Slhour decided he needed to put a stop to all of the madness and he joined the KKK as a mission to defeat it. He got initiated into the KKK tribe and killed the "head honcho", Jeremy Ratchet. The murder of Jeremy Rachet led the KKK to an end and the Jews slowly migrated back to England. Alabama was then peaceful. Few of the donkeys that the Jewish left behind remained in North America, and were found by a Canadian named Simon Reley. Reley brought all of the found donkeys back to Canada and named them singly. He named the five, Sam, Som, Sum, Sem and Semen. The five donkeys died and Simon sold the meats to an african man. This african man sold the donkey meat and made millions of dollars. This african was then the richest black man in the country. His name was Jamaal Jameson. With Jamaal being rich, he signed a treaty to end slavery once and for all. Slavery has not been popular since. :)

Women's dress became more feminine after the tomboy Flapper styles of the 1920s; bras and corsets became important for a healthy figure, and a proper lady was always to be dressed appropriately.
As you can see in the link provided below, there were certain expectations of the wife that we find ridiculous today. It was acceptable for a man to be upset if his wife wore red nail polish, didn't keep up with the sewing, had crooked seams in her stockings, or didn't go to bed at the same time her husband did. What was it like to be a school teacher in the 1930s?
In the 1930s, and the beginning of last century, classrooms were run very strictly. Teachers were permitted to use corporal punishment and other disciplinary methods designed to shame children into supposedly doing better. Expectations on a teacher were far greater. They did their own cleaning of the classroom, and were expected to be at school very early to warm up the room with a fire in winter, for example. There were rules about what teachers could wear and who they could associate with outside of school.
One of the major differences was the restrictions on a teacher in his/her personal
life one hundred years or so ago. Women, in particular, were subject to extreme rules and regulations in their dress and deportment. For an entertaining read of what they had to endure back then, click on the link below.
How did people travel in America in 1936?
They had pretty much the same transportation methods we have today -- cars, trains, ships, airplanes, etc. Of course, they were more old-fashioned verisons of those things. There were some other differences too. For example, traveling by airplane was still new enough to be considered a "big deal", whereas now it's something that people don't even think about. There were also some methods of transportation which became less popular in later years, such as trolley cars and zeppelins.
