Number one is the front of the engine, drivers side. But you need to time the motor from no. 8.
most likey depending on the miles on this engine,it may be the timing chain is worn some ,so this would keep the timing to line up to a perfect mark,or zero,or the scan tool may be off, needing calibated!

Is it hard to change a distributor in a Nissan Pathfinder?
A distributor is not hard to change as long as you follow some simple rules: (1) Set number one piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) before starting the job. (2) Make marks on the distributor and the engine so you will be able to match the two marks when re-installing the distributor. (3) DO NOT crank or manually rotate the engine while the distributor is out. The rest of the job is removing nuts or bolt and wires in order to pull the distributor out. NOTE: When pulling out and when re-installing the distributor, you will have to rotate it somewhat - just follow the "feel" as you go. PS: You don't want to forget the order of the plug wires to the distributor - it might be a good idea to tape and mark the wires as you pull them. You also want to observe which direction the rotor is pointing before you remove the distributor (an added precaution).
Replace a Chevy 350 distributor rotor?
There are a few different styles that were used over the years, but if you go to the auto parts and buy a new one for your application you will be able to see how it's held on. It's under the distributor cap. It's generally accepted policy to replace the rotor and distributor cap at the same time. Just make sure you connect the wires to the same place on the new distributor and don't "FORCE" anything. Distributor caps and rotors are made of a strong but brittle plastic and will break. Many of the rotors are just "pressed" onto the shaft with your fingers but some are screwed to the centrifugal advance mechanism. It depends on your distributor.

How do you tell the firing order on motor and distributor cap for a chevy 350?
1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2, The firing order is usually stamped on the intake manifold. To get the right order on the distributor cap, remove the distributor cap. Remove the #1 spark plug. Place your finger in the spark plug hole. Manually turn the motor clockwise. Compressed air will "blow by" your finger when the #1 cylinder is reaching the top of the compression stroke. Verify "top dead center" on the timing mark/harmonic balancer. Look at the distributor. The rotor will be pointing to where the #1 spark plug wire will go. Place the cap back on the distributor, put the #1 wire where the rotor pointed, follow the firing order stamped on the intake CLOCKWISE around the distributor cap. Ok, I had the same problem this weekend. Somehow I mixed up the wires, even thought I pulled one at a time. I have a 94 GMC suburban. From the front of the truck, #1 is at 5 oclock on the distrubutor, the first pole clockwise from the mounting screw that points towards the front right headlight. There are two mounting screws for the dist cap. One towards the cab firewall and one closest to the coil. That screw, one pole clockwise, is number one cylinder on the rotation. Rotor turns clockwise. I hope this helps someone more than trying to stick your finger over the plug hole and be Stretch ArmStrong by turning the ignition at the same time.
