Pre 1997/9 models of Ford Vehicles were self-adjusting via the clutch-foot-pedal. The pedal engages a ratchet system called the QUADRANT & PAWL and is part of the pedal. The mechanism is very similar on older Ford models of: Escort, Fiesta, Sierra, Granada, Transit & others. Newer vehicles may have a Hydraulic Clutch from 1997/9 onwards, and these work differently from the cable & pully mechanism. Clutch-fluid can be bled to improve the ability to operate the clutch, however this is not necessarily a method of adjusting the clutch.
If your reading this article because you have a broken clutch-pedal then please read on.
If when pressing the foot-pedal it feels like cable is broken, or pedal is loose, ...This is symptomatic of failure of the QUADRANT & PAWL 'ratchet' mechanism due to wear of teeth on the ratchet.
In some cases the pedal fails to pull the clutch out far enough to change gear, and may make a 'springing noise'. This is due to slippage on some worn ratchet-teeth, but the mechanism has not reached full failure. There are 2 ways to remedy the fault.
1. Change the Quadrant & Pawl, using only genuine Ford parts. #Beware of inferior mouldings that are not up to standard e.g. too soft, and do not trust 'pattern-parts' on eBay etc.
2. SHORTEN THE CABLE.
Check to make sure ther is not water in the fuse box. The fuses sit right under the dashboard on the drivers side and when the seal around the windscreen gets old it can leak water right on top of the fuse box. hope this helps The answer above is a last resort check....after wrking in a ford garage i find a lot have them have fuse prob, if u still have the owners manual which would of come with the car when bought it shows a diagram of wht fuses are wht and where do they go and how many amps there are, also they will be on the cover of the fuse box. but to answer ur question no these are all on seperarte fuses but fuses are easy to replace, u will ned to replace thm in the BOTH fuses cos of ur head lights cos each light has a fuse for the right light and a fuse for the left light. U will find one fuse box in the over from the bonet release (Usually under a special carpartment for change and stuff like tht) and the other one will be in the top corner of the engine bay on the pasanger side.
go to halfords, buy engine degreaser, (that u add to oil to clean engine.... then follow instructions, an drain oil from sump plug located underneath engine, and then replace with new oil, and also replace oil filter. if ne more help just let me know
