Check gas cap message 2001 Aurora how do I correct it?
A lot of times this comes up because the computer has detected an evaporative system leak. Make sure the gas cap is tight and if the message still comes up you can try a new gas cap. If still a problem you probably have a leak in the Evap system which will require repair. Even though you think your gas cap might be ok buy a new one it probally has a pressure release in it and it is no good. After replacing the gas cap then disconnect the positive cable from your battery for about 10 seconds and put it back on this will reset the computer and should take that message away. Had this problem, needed to diconnect both terminals for the code to clear. Thanks for the help in resolving this problem as GM dealer wanted $$$$$$ to clear code which only takes a minute with portable computer they have. No wonder they are losing market share!!!!

check the rollover inertia switch on front passenger side of cab. It has to be plugged in and fully depressed (white button) for the ball to make contact and allow the fuel system to work. It might be bad but I have not seen one go bad yet.
Also if it is a 5 speed or 4 speed you need to depress the clutch to start. the clutch contacts a clutch sensor if it is bad or unplugged from the wire harness the truck will not start. I don't have experience with the automatic transmission version but I will bet it also has a neutral indicator switch that could also be the problem. I assume you have checked battery voltage and such.
The last think I have experienced with intermittent starting in the ignition switch in front of the key on the steering column. You would have to take the column cover off and get a special torx tamper proof bit (27 if i remember correctly) that has a hole in the center to fit over the ignition switch screw. Just replace it at $15.00 or less it is a cheap peace of mind that that is not the problem.

with tire on ground remove cotter pin from axle nut and loosen nut. then lift car remove tire, caliper, rotor and cotter pin from tie rod end then remove nut. remove nut and bolt from lower ball joint to knuckle assembly and pry apart knuckle from lower ball joint with bar pressing on lower control arm. look inside knuckle you will see 4 bolts holding hub assembly to knuckle. remove and install new and reverse process, wow.

BEFORE you go to the expense of checking all suspension parts, check the hood mounts.
Raise the hood and support it with the prop rod, then vigorously shake the hinge (fore, aft, left, right, up and down). Be careful not to disturb the prop rod (it might help to have a friend hold the hood) or you might lose fingers. That's what mine was. $2.00 part vs $1000 for a new front end. That should account for the clunkiness. If you don't replace the part, try tightening it, or stuff a small rag underneath the hinge so that upward pressure is exerted on the hinge when closed.
If you discover another (much quieter) rattle after the clunk is gone, check the wiper grate. It can come loose and also add to road noise. THEN: Check all steering linkages, ball joints, brakes, and bearings. Be sure to clean and apply grease to all appropriate locations. The caliper pins can come loose too if you haven't serviced your breaks in a while - which is very dangerous. 20 bucks says it's your hood hinges.

AnswerIf when you engage it the 4wd light comes on but you are still in 2wd it might be that your hubs aren't locked. Rangers either have auto or manual locking hubs. If they are manual locking you will see something you can turn in the middle of the front wheels. When you turn them to the locked position your axels are engaged to the wheels and will spin together. When they aren't locked your front axel isn't enganed to the front wheels. You can have the code scanned at autozone for free. They will also test your coils if you have them off the car. Always check your plugs and wires first before replacing the coil.
