What could be the problem with a 1990 Ford Thunderbird that will not idle down?

Last year mine started not idling down, then when it did it idled too low & wanted to stall. After several months of this happening intermittently, I started getting service engine lights. Got them read & they said O2 left, coil pack & O2 right. Took to garage & they replaced the coil pack & problem is solved. I've found that this is a common problem. Oh yeah I have a '90 SC. Can you put a 5 speed manual transmission in a 95 thunderbird with the 4.6 engine?

I imagine you could, though i don't know for sure. you would have to get a transmission, bellhousing, fly wheel, clutch, and shifter from a 96-98 mustang. The 99 and newer may have a different bolt patern on the flywheel, but im not sure. You would also need a pedal assembly from something. A supercoupe pedal may work, but I'm not sure if its compatible with the mustang clutch reservoir as the supercoupe uses a completely different transmission. you might have to use the mustang pedal assembly. You would have to modify your transmission crossmember, or graft in the mustangs. You may need to get your driveshaft shortened. Also you would need to take out the console and cut a hole in the driveshaft tunnel for the shifter. The console would need some modification for the new shifter. another thing to think about is hooking up the speedometer cable, and getting the right speedo gear to match the differential gear ratio. You probably have 3.08:1 rear gears, where a mustang might be 3.27:1 or something deeper. Also this may be a good time for a new exhast system, as the old one may interfere. I bet it would probably cost you 2000-2500 using junkyard parts to do it and would take 50-60 hours by someone who knows what they are doing. This may be best considered if your automatic just went out and you had to replace it. The cost of the automatic rebuild is cheaper, but not as fun - good luck.

How do you change the fuel pump on a 1989 Ford Thunderbird?

im assuming you have an electric pump.some times you can get to them through a access panel in the trunk.my 88 dont have on, if this is the case with the 89, wich it probably is, you have to disconnect the battery, drop the tank, remove the fuel lines and wiring from pump, then there is a ring you tap to the left using a screwdriver and mallot until it releases. the pump assembly will lift right uot from there. make sure you use air and blow off all the dirt from the top of the tank, esspecialy around the pump assembly before you remove it so you dont get dirt in the tank.

What is the difference between 1963 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster and regular convertible?

the difference is all the roadsters came from the factory with a fiberglass tonneau cover to hide the rear seats, thay also had a grab bar on the passenger side of the dash, the Kelsey Hayes 48 spoke wheels and special badging on the front fenders and tonneau cover. these cars are very rare and can be faked. all 63 roadsters had a vin# starting with 3y89 , convertibles came with a vin# starting with 2y85. roadsters data tags show a body code of 76b while convertibles show a body code of 76a. a lot of convertible owners seem to add the after market or factory tonneau cover and call them roadsters so buyer beware because there is a large price difference between the two.

How do you remove and install the power steering gearbox on a 1965 thunderbird?

Just did this on a 64.

Loosen the top bolt on the steering shaft coupler (also called a rag-joint) , remove the lower bolt on the coupler and slide the coupler up as far as it will go. Disconnect the two hyd. lines and the ground wire. Remove the three bolts that secure the box to the frame.

The trick to getting the box out of the car is to remove the lowest mounting pad from the gear before trying to drop it out of the car. Ford calls out a special tool for this but a large pipe-wrench does the job easily.

The box is extremely heavy so don't be under it as it comes out. After it's out you'll need to remove the remaining 2 mounting pads so they can be installed on the rebuilt gear.
