Honda Prelude

The Honda Prelude is a two-door sports coupe produced from 1978 to 2001 by the Japanese automaker Honda. This car during its production run served as a testbed for a number of features that would eventually be commonplace for the rest of the Honda line: examples include double-wishbone suspension, four-wheel steering, fuel injection, VTEC (after the Acura NSX), and ATTS.

How do you repair the inside drivers side locking handle on an 87 Honda Prelude?

This same thing happened to me with my 87 Prelude, and it pisses me the off. A lot. If you open up the door and look at the locking device, you'll see that it consists of a 2" plastic cylinder that has the lock/red (unlocked) sticker on it, as well as the little tab you use to lock and unlock the door. That plastic piece is connected to a metal rod that extends across the door to the actual lock on the side. I don't know what the hell they were thinking when they designed it, but essesntially they made it so that the plastic torques when you turn the thing and pushes the metal rod so that it the door locks. Chances are, the plastic cylinder broke right in half, so it's essentially useless. The only thing you can really do is attempt to glue the pieces back together so that it'll be in its original form. I used epoxy, and it worked for like two days, but because the break wasn't too clean, it couldn't hold together when you torqued on it to lock the door. Complete crap. Good luck fixing yours, though.

When should you change the timing belt on a 2000 Honda Civic?

Each model has a specific recommended replacement mileage and you need to adhere to this for preventive maintenance. If the belt breaks, at a minimum you will be stranded because the engine just stops. Worst case on some models you will cause severe damage to the engine including bent valves, broken pistons, and possible main bearing damage which is VERY EXPENSIVE to repair.

Also note that the belt is not "hard urethane" but a reinforced rubber composite. The tensioner is not hydraulic. It is a spring loaded ratchet design reset when the new belt is installed.

You should get your facts straight before giving advice which could cause others a great deal of expense and trouble.

AnswerThey must be changed every 60,000 miles. I believe Honda recommend 75,000 although I would not let it go that far. AnswerEvery 60000 to 90000 miles, or if you ever have an oil leak on the front of your engine, as this weakens the belt. While you're there replace the water pump too. It's just good insurance. AnswerAccording to owner's manual, under normal operating conditions, timing belt replacement at 105,000 miles/168,000 kilometers/7 years. Change at 60,000 miles/100,000 kilometers when driven continuously in extreme temperature conditions ie; operated at temperatures 110deg. F & above/-20 deg. F or below. AnswerI had a TiresPlus service manager today recommend that I change the timing belt at 60,000 miles. I pointed out that the manual suggests doing this at 90,000 or 105,000 miles, depending on the driving conditions. His response was, no for the LX model, it's 60,000 miles. This, in my view is a crock. Honda is the most reliable and reputable company in the auto business and I have a hard time believing they would jeopardize their product and their customers' satisfaction with an erroneous maintenance schedule.

Bottom line, go 90,000 miles, then change the timing belt.

I agree with another respondent who recommended replacing the water pump at the same time. Water pumps tend to go sour around that mileage and the incremental cost to do this is pretty minimal, mainly, just the cost of the pump, about $150. Otherwise, you'll spend an extra $200 in labor for the same job. Conversely, if your water pump goes kaput at 60,000 miles, go ahead and replace the timing belt at that point and save the $200 in labor.

My mom has a 2000 Honda accord and she is over protective of her car and wants things changed way before they need changed. Her car has 86,000 miles and she had me check her timing belt. when i did the belt looked brand new. about a week later i was helping my friend change the timing belt on his Toyota 4runner and we needed a harmonic balancer/ puller. we are good friends with a certified master mechanic and we went to borrow his harmonic puller and i asked him about when my mom's timing belt should be changed. He said they should be changed between 90 and 105 thousand miles. he also said that if the timing belt breaks the engine is very sensitive and you would almost be guarantied to have a valve bend or a head break, even if after changing the timing belt if the timing is off even one click it can have that happen. so make sure you change it in time and if doing it your self make sure the timing is perfect before starting your car.

ANSWER

I've had a civic, CRV, and Accord. Usually I replace the belts at around 90,000 miles (105,000 on my CRV) for the Midwest. Have the mechanic do the water pump and inspect the bearings (most do). 60,000 is overkill unless you live in the desert (temps 110F+).

Your 1992 Honda prelude 22l just started making a consistent squealing noise when driving it stops squealing when you brake or when the car is at a stand still please help?

i would think that it may be a belt slipping. since it only happens when the car is moving/acelerating. perhaps one of your belts is loose and when you accelerate since the pulley moves faster the belt start slipping .also the splash shield behind the brakes rotors sometimes bend and you get a squealing type metalic sound. if is more of a humming sound it may be a wheel bearing .

How many airbags are in a 1989 Honda Prelude?

If your 1994 Honda Prelude V-tec is not getting power to the AC fuse under the hood is there another fuse behind your dash somewhere that you need to change so your AC will blow cold?

Preludes have a probelm with the Climate Control (CC) circuit boards; after a while the solder will break loose. To fix: 1. Remove the whole radio assembly. {Console 10 screws; Radio 4 screws} NOTE: It is easiest to remove the 2 connectors on under the CC now while the CC box is still fastened in place. There is a tab on the bottom of each that you have to hold down as you pull. 2. Remove the climate controls and center vents all as one unit (careful of the temp cable - you have to undo the screw in the end of it.) IMPORTANT: Remember how the cable clips back into place so that you can hook it up the right way. {3 screws facing away from you on the bottom front support; 1 screw underneath CC in the middle, 1 screw holding temp select cable} 3. Remove vents from the CC {2 screws in the back} 4. Remove temp select smaller circuit board from CC box {3 small screws} 5. Remove lights on top of CC box. All you see of these are the white plastic bottoms. Turn ~1/4 turn and they should fall out. 6. Unclip and pull off the casing from the front of the CC controls. IMPORTANT: DO NOT REMOVE THE INDIVIDUAL BUTTONS!! YOU WILL BREAK THEM IF YOU TRY! Yes, that's personal experience. {1 or 2 small screws} 7. You should now be looking at a circuit board. Resolder all of the pins the lead to connectors at where they are soldered to the board. If you are not comfortable with soldering, find someone who is...the solder cannot be touching! "Cliffs" on soldering: (A) Using a soldering iron heat the backside of the pin (couple seconds), be careful not to puch the pins through the board. (B) Apply solder to where the tip of the iron meets the pin - the solder should distribute itself pretty evenly around the solder all ready there. (C) Repeat until all pins are done. 8. Steps 6-1 in reverse. 9. Enjoy your a/c that now works and your fan controls that now actually change where you want them too. --This took me about 2.5 hours total, but I didn't have any directions to go from. The biggest problem I had was getting the temp select cable to clip back in place. Make sure you try it out a few times before you put averything back in to make sure it works like it should and doesn't slip out if it's clip. --Also should probably remove the battery cable before you start. I didn't and had to replce the radio fuse so I must of shorted it out somehow.

Why is the S3 light in your 1988 Honda Prelude always blinking?

If an '87 is like an '88 at all then i would say that your speed sensor is out. Just to make sure was your speedo bouncing around before and did it just quit? if so then it is your speed sensor. If you don't mind it flashing then get a friend to go with you on the highway and do a 50mph 55mph 60mph and 65mph test and see what rpm you are running then when there is low traffic do a 30 that's how ive been driving mine for the last 6 months

I have an '87 Prelude and I cannot find the S3 light. I've checked my manuals and called the dealer and we're stumped. I found some reference on the web about the S3 flashing and the transmission needing a fluid check. I also saw a reference to the speed sensor and associated issues with the speedometer. I thought this S3 light might be associated with the light on the dashboard for the shift lever's position but my shift indicator uses "P", "D", etc. Where is this light located? Is it the Check Engine Light that's blinking three times? Is it the computer's flashing LED? Z-Gear

Where is the voltage regulator on a 1986 Honda Prelude carb engine 1.8?

it is inside the alternator. If the voltage regulator goes bad you have to change the whole alternator

AnswerIn your 1986 Honda prelude the voltage regulator should be separate from the Alternator. It should be a small black square with a five wire connector if i remember right. It should be mounted on the passenger side strut bubble inside the engine bay. Between the battery and the strut bubble and between the under hood fuse box and the engine. It is held on by two 10mm bolts. I know that this is where the voltage regulator is on my 1985 Honda prelude with the 1.8l carbed engine and since the 84-87 were mostly the same it should be the same on yours.

What size speakers fit in a 1997 Honda Prelude?

* Front door: 6-1/2" Pretty standard. Most should fit.

* Rear deck: 6" x 9" Need smaller magnets or shallower speakers here to avoid contact with the trunk lid spring bars.

* Tweeters are a bit more difficult as the stock grill doesn't allow for much wiggle room and many newer tweets have large fancy grills on them.

I suggest either a professional install or take very detailed measurements before you buy.
