Why on a 98 Kia sephia did the gas gauge stop working after you put gas in it?
I have the same problem with my 1998 Kia Sephia and it is most likely the "sending unit" which is probably located in the gas tank. Could also be a short in a wire. When I fix mine I will re-post.

How do you replace PCV valve on a 1998 Kia Sephia?
The PCV valve on any Kia with the 1.8 liter DOHC 4 cylinder(Sephia or Spectra) is located in the aluminum valve cover on top of the engine, on the passenger side and facing the firewall. There is a 3/8" i.d. neoprene hose about 5" long connecting the valve to the intake manifold, with a "squeeze type" hose clamp on each end of the hose. Simply squeeze the clamps with a pair of pliers and move them toward the center of the hose, then work the hose off the fitting on the intake manifold and PCV valve. The valve will probably pull out of the engine valve cover along with the hose. Place the new valve in the valve cover, then reattach the hose and move the clamps back to their original position with pliers. CAUTION: The old hose, if it hasn't been replaced before, will be hard and brittle, and may break. Just get a 6" piece of 3/8" neoprene fuel hose at your parts store, cut it to length, and install it on the PCV valve and manifold fitting with the old clamps. You're done!

I just spent 3 long evenings after work replacing the water pump for a 96 Kia Sephia. The old water pump was in very bad shape and the sound it made was very loud. The bearing had failed and coolant steamed out of the weep hole and the front of the housing profusely.
I suggest removing the power steering resevior bolts any clamp that holds any hard or flexible tubing along that side of the engine in place. You will find yourself with your hands over, under and through the lines most of the time. I had the car on two jackstands positioned behind the front A-arms and i lifted the vehicle with a large floor jack positioned under the center of the front support beam. There is a fairly large nub that the jack could rest around as I elevated the front. I removed the front right tire but found that most of my time was spent above looking into the engine bay from the front right corner leaning over the fender.
I had to remove the alternator tensioner bracket completely to allow for it to swing back far enough the slide the water pump out. The power steering pump is easily moved once the tentioner bolt is unscrewed/loosened by using a large crowbar wedged between the power steering pump and its bracket from the front of the engine bay, pulling forward as a lever to move it clear.
NOTE: Be sure to mark timing belt with something that will stick and is easy to see. I used soapstone and sharpies. Be aware, while you are working in this confined spaced, the timing cogs will get bumped, turned, jumped or whatever so it is IMPERATIVE that you mark all reference points before removing the timing belt. If you do not mark, and engine jumps timing, you will probably doing a valve job, or worse.
What is the spark plug gap on a Kia Sephia?
A 2001 Kia Sephia plug gap is between 7mm-8mm or .028-.032 thousandths of an inch. My sephia was recommended as .044 at parts store and most auto forums online. Car always ran rough on highway and sputter whenever I gave it gas. I set plug gap to .030 and the Sephia is ready for another 150k miles. Runs great. Have been fighting this for almost a year. Also, the manufacturer states the recommended plug gap on the emissions sticker located under the hood. Usually this is a postcard sized white sticker with black text located on the underside of the hood or in the engine compartment. I hope this helps as it has helped me.
How do you set the timing on a 1996 Kia Sephia 1.8?
You need to loosen the two 10mm bolts that hold the distributor in place. Connect your timing light to the #1 spark plug wire. Timing specification at idle is 10 degrees with the DLC connector jumped. You need a short piece of wire to connect the "DIAG" and "GND" terminals under the box that says "Diagnosis" under the hood. Rotate the distributor as needed to set the timing to 10 degrees.
Take the transmission out of overdrive. I believe there is a button right on the gear shift to do this with.
What is the spark plug gap for a 1998 Kia Sephia?
spark plug gap is .044"
The Haynes repair manual says that the gap changed for the 98's and should be between .028 and .032. When buying from Autozone they will be gapped at .044 but this is incorrect. I installed 4 plugs today gapped at .044 and it idled very rough at redlights, pulled them out and gapped at .030 and it's running perfectly.

This is a HUGE online repair manual. I was very impressed, overlooking some translation errors.
I also have a '98 Kia Sephia with the same problem. It worked fine (surged between 0 and 15MPH, but no big deal) then one day I started it, pulled in to a parking lot turned it off and it wouldn't turn back on for quite some time. A mechanic friend found out that my crank(shaft) position sensor was going bad. The sensor tells the computer that the crankshaft is turning. This is critical for starting the car and keeping it running. If the sensor reports no RPMs then the computer shuts of the fuel pump. He found this out with a tester he hooked up to the DLC and with the spark plugs unplugged turned the engine over and it wouldn't start because the sensor reported no RPMs. When the car would die while I was driving it the sensor would also report no RPMs. We first thought the fuel pump was to blame, but it wasn't. These cars get pretty tricky.
Where is the fuse box in a 1999 Kia Sephia?

Where is the oil plug and oil filter on a 2000 Kia Sephia?
The oil filter is located 4 inches behind the alternator toward the drivers side, on the passenger side of the vehicle, mounted sideways. The oil plug is located directly below the center of the alternator on the bottom of the vehicle, on the passenger side, mounted sideways.
From what I understand, you don't replace the oil, you just throw the Kia out and get another one. Seriously, though, if you don't have that information in your owner's manual under the section, "Periodic maintenance", then you might consider investing a couple dollars on a "Chilton's" manual for your year/model car. These manuals are well and plainly written and include good clear pictures. You can perform most repairs or maintenance with a Chilton's and a decent set of common tools. For less than $100 in a Chiltons and a basic tool set, you could save thousands in what you'd have to pay a mechanic. A Chiltons can be purchased online at Amazon.com or from an auto parts store in your neighborhood, like NAPA or Cragen.

Its about a 30 min job, and up to 1:30 hrs if your not to familiar with cars! Experience level is Novice

If you look under the plastic lever you will see a copper colored bar that runs parallel to the handle insert a small flat bladed screwdriver and gently push the bar towards the dash when you do that the door will open. There are two Phillips screws holding the latch mechanism the best way to unscrew them is to either use a stubby screwdriver or a 1/4" ratchet with a socket to fit a screwdriver bit. The new part can be ordered for about fifteen dollars at the local dealer.
