How do you pick a lock?

The most horrible feeling in the world is right after you close the door of your car and understand that the doors are locked and you left the keys inside. Wouldn't you want to be competent to pick the lock to retrieve your keys? When we hear the phrase "lock picking", we think felony, intruders, illegal activity. But this is not always the case. Certainly, you can break the window of your vehicle to get back in, but the best idea in this case is to call an expert locksmith to open your doors so that you can get back on your way with negligible effort and aggravation.

Just like anything else in life, in order to pick a lock you require the right tools. The basic kit contains a lock pin and a tension wrench. Evidently, in an emergency, you can change the lock pin with a hair pin. The Specialized kits include a wide variety of tension wrenches that will cover a variety of lock pins.

How do you unlock your car with keys locked inside?

Answer

Heres a nifty trick, if you have 2 remotes for the power locks have the person with the other one call you on your cellphone and hold it to the phone while pressing the button, and at the same time you hold your phone close to and facing the car.

Note: See if you can find someone that has actually done this! To date, no one has made it work. The operating frequency differences between the cell phone and the RKE systems will prevent this from working in the real world.

Answer to note: I am a manager for a large rental car company and we do this all the time when keys get locked in cars. All spares are kept at a central location about 40 miles from our branch, and rather than make the drive to get them or overnight them out, we use this nifty little trick. It absolutely works!!

Otherwise a locksmith will help, police sometimes carry slim jims, and the good old coat hanger through the window trick.

If it is a GM product and less than a few years old, call OnStar. If you have basic OnStar services, they can unlock the car remotely.

Alternatively you can try a tire iron or a brich on the window.

OR:

(2 people work best)

With a newer model Van, try a crobar--or screwdriver from the top (between the door and car-frame) then slip the plastic rod from a set of household blinds (used for twisting to make blinds open or closed) through the top and press down on automatic lock button. The rod is thin--flexible and sturdy enough to apply enough pressure to pop lock!

How do you open a briefcase when the combination is lost?

One way - Look through the gap between the number wheel and the frame of the briefcase.

Do one full rotation of the number wheel. While rotating, look for a dip line through the axial line of the number wheel. Keep the dial so that that line exactly faces you.

Now to find the correct number, add 5 to the number shown in front of the number wheel.

If the result crosses 9, you should subtract 5 from the number shown in front.

It should be done for each of the number wheels.

It should be done in a min :)

This results in the least number of combinations on each of the three wheels i.e 3* 10 = Only 30 combinations :)

Another Way- especially if you can't see the dip in the wheel- Set the combo to 0x0, (the middle number doesn't matter right now) and while holding the open lever as if to open the lock, spin the middle dial (that's the "x" in the notation I'm using)... If your combo is hit, the lock will spring open. If not, try 0x1, then 0x2, thru to 0x9, then 1x0,1x1,...1x9, then with 2, 3, etc. This allows only 100 options instead of 1000, and I just opened mine in about 4 minutes... (combo was 391, so even if it had been 999, it would have only taken about 12 minutes)

Additional Info: I cracked my (late) father's Samsonite case by holding the case upright under a bright light: looking down the cracks whilst turning the dials I could see a gap about 3 digits wide. This area was dark as opposed to the brass coloured (split) ring which reflects the light.

I find it helps to understand how the lock works. The C-shaped ring is rotated by the digit wheel. Each wheel prevents a spring-loaded bar from moving closer to the lock. Where there is a gap, no pressure is exerted on the bar. Thus all wheels have to line up with the gap away from the lock. When this occurs, the bar moves closer to the lock, and the hooks on the lid are released. The two side handles play no part in the lock mechanism, therefore can be kept open all the time. As soon as the correct combination is reached, the lid flips open without any mechanism.

If you pick a lock can you relock it with a pick?

Yes, you can pick a simple lock in either the unlocked or locked position. There isn't much difference in the actions between the two.

Additional Response:

When a lock is unlocked, there are no more pins to manipulate. All one has to do is turn the cylinder inside the kik (Key in Knob) housing, and it slides into place. You can use a pick, you can use a fingernail file, you can use pressure on the outside of the actual cylinder and just turn it with your finger.

An unlocked cylinder - in all cases that I am aware of at least - has the pins separated and the bottom pins aren't even touching the kik. There's no resistance present, so yes, it can be "relocked" with a pick. It can also be relocked by putting your finger on it and spinning it a little bit.

There are no pins to manipulate in order to "relock" any lock I have ever encountered - and I've seen quite a few.

How do you pick locks with paper clips?

Collect your materials. Most of what you need to pick a lock with a paperclip is easily accessible. You really only need three different things. The paperclips, one to act as lock pick, one to act as tension wrench, and a pair of pliers to shape the paperclips.

  • Two big paperclips, one to act as tension wrench, one to act as the pick. There is no upper size limit, but you want to make sure that the width is not slim enough that it will fit into the lock and that the height is tall enough so that you can insert it into the lock while still holding onto enough length to turn them.
  • Grab a pair of pliers to shape the two paperclips. It's easier to use pliers than your hands.

How can you open a locked car door without the key?

locksmith

Or if you use wireless door opening remote keyfob and you do have other one at home, then call anyone at home. When they reply to your call, ask them to take your other remote control and press open button near the phone. Put your phone next to your car when that button is pressed. Hope it works (EDIT: This is an urban legend and it DOES NOT WORK, so don't waste your time trying.)

Call a locksmith or someone who can get a spare key or remote from home.

Depending on the age of the car, a "jimmy" or removing the lock are the only options. A "jimmy" (a flat metal J shaped device that slides down the outside of the car window) can't be used on most modern cars as they are equipped with an anti-jimmy plate. A locksmith can defeat the lock and leave the door undamaged and you will need to get a replacement lock. Getting a spare key/remote from home is by far the least expensive solution.

What are you supposed to do when you smash your finger in a car door?

Don't panic. Try to massage the finger to circulate blood flow. Ice it to help stop bleeding and keep it from bruising more. If you want you can drain it. I was too scared to have it done, so I left it. My injury was really bad, but I took the pain. Take some pain relievers and ice it. If you don't go to a doctor, it may have a chance of being sprained or etc.. So get a splint or some type of sticks and put one in the front and one in the back and wrap it. Keep it like that for a couple of days or weeks. It helps relieve a Lot of pain and it will heal faster. Your finger might be completely black or just a little of it will be discolored; don't freak out. You may have a chance of losing the nail. But it will definitely grow back. To be sure, you might wanna get medical help...cause you never know...depending on how bad the injury is, your nail might not even grow back... I don't know if mine is going to though :/ But all I know is that the pains gone. My goal was just for the pain to go away :] I hope you feel better!

How do you set the tsa007 approved Samsonite lock?

How do you unlock your Hartman suitcase when no knowing the combination?

This Hartmann lock is not as simple as resetting the other common 3 ring locks, such as on the Samsonite. There are 999 numbers you can try and it takes about an hour to go through all 999 numbers. Your case will be open then. If you want to pick the lock, you can get a razor blade and slide it between the wheels (left side) and feel for a notch while turning the number wheels. Once you have all three wheels aligned to the notch, just write down the numbers and rotate the entire wheel set around together until it opens.

How do you open samsonite suitcase when combination is lost?

If you have forgotten the code to your suitcase's combination lock, you can either use a hammer and screwdriver to disengage the latch, or if you have an immense amount of patience, you can set the dials to 0-0-0 and increment them, one digit at a time, until the lock opens. If you are quick and agile, you may be able to open the lock in ten to twenty minutes, however, if it is a four or five digit lock, it might take you several days to a week.

How do you remove and replace ignition actuator on a 95 mustang?

Contrary to the repair manual; you do not need to remove the steering wheel. Remove the bottom dash panel below the steering wheel and then the bottom black steering wheel cover (3 screws). You will see a 1/8 inch hole and pin below the lock set. Put the key lock in the neutral position and push the pin and remove the ignition lock set. Put the new lock set in the neutral position and insert it. Turn it to the off position which resets the lock pin.

How do you get the hood up if the hood release cable is broken?

You're going to have to pull the latch manually. The best bet is to go through the grille with a special tool or fabricate one out of heavy wire. The cable connects to the driver's side of the latch and pulls it open from there.

How do you unlock the steering wheel on 1983 300D when the key won't budge out of the locked position?

The steering wheel and key are linked together for anti-theft purposes. Try turning the wheel hard one way and see if the key becomes loose - can turn or be withdrawn. If no luck, try turning the wheel hard the other way. ***** Mine was tied to the electric system. My wife pulled the electric seat controls off of the door by closing it to hard. I had to rewire those first then the ignition unlocked. Good Luck.

How do you unlock the steering wheel?

hopefully your not stealing the vehicle. but you will have to remove the steering wheel and then remove the key switch itself, purchase a new key switch and replace. However if its only to move the vehicle, after you remove the key switch you can take a screw driver and turn the mechanism in the column to unlock.

How do you repair a 1995 Ford Ranger's door locks that are sticking will not unlock from the outside?

If it won't unlock with the key, this means that the rod from the key tumbler to the door latch has become disconnected or is broken. If you can get the door open, you will need to remove the inside door panel and look in through the holes to see what the problem is.

Unlock a 1995 Camry without the keys?

Well, if you're not good with a clothes hanger or if you're not a professional car thief, then call AAA. You could break a window but that is not usually a good idea. You are going to have to call a locksmith to have him unlock the key and make a new key.
