The cover for the instrument pod that the compass is in is held on by several screws. They are covered by small "buttons" and are towards the front top on both sides. Pry off the buttons (carefully) and you will be able to access the screws. Note that the same bulb is available at any auto parts store for 1/3rd the price Misubish wants for them.

I had a problem with my 98 cranking but without spark. I traced and tested all of the sensors and harnesses until I realized the obvious. The ignition system will not operate unless it sees a minimum of 8 volts while cranking. I hooked up a simple voltmeter and tesed during cranking and had a reading of only 7.65. I confirmed the problem by cleaning the terminals and used a jumperbox. The voltage read an average of 8.75 and it started. I replaced the battery and problem solved.

In the rear you can buy the full springs from Old Man Emu Suspensions or you can use the rear Toyota Sequoia 2in spacers I believe they fit and in the front its as easy as applying more torsion on the torsion bars in front to gain more height. Do not go more that 2in because it can cause CV boot premature wear and the high center of gravity will make the truck more prone to put it to sleep in the pavement!!!!

The top two lights are flashing because the front wheel drive detection switch is half way between open and closed... it isn't being properly pushed in or retracted when in 2wd (putting the vehicle in 4wd will likely make them light solid though, depending on the failure type).

What is going on here is you have either a broken vacuum line or a faulty Free-wheel clutch solenoid pack.

In order to engage/disengage the front wheels, vacuum is applied to either side of the actuator diaphragm to pull the the rod in the correct direction. If vacuum is lost, the actuator will not fully engage/disengage, tripping the switch inside the differential telling it that the system is between modes, and flashing the front wheel lights.

You will want to first go over all of your vacuum lines to make sure you have none rotted out or fallen off. If there was recent work done to the vehicle, you want to make sure there are no hoses crossed or pinched off, etc. Also watch where the lines come off the firewall as they sometimes get disconnected here. Depending on your intake manifold, you may have a rubber cap on the driver side rear corner pointing straight up... if this cap rots it will do the same thing.

If all of your lines appear OK, you will want to test and replace the free wheel clutch solenoid pack. The solenoid pack is located on the passenger side inner fender, just below the air filter housing... it is two side by side vacuum solenoids mounted to a bracket with 10mm bolts. Make a note of the vacuum hose arrangement (or photograph it) for proper reassembly order.

Most likely you will have one burnt out solenoid here so a resistance check will likely be your quick confirmation (open circuit would be bad of course... normal resistance is around 44ohms each). Other wise you can use your hand vacuum pump and check to make sure vacuum is allowed/disallowed based on voltage/ground application to each solenoid... if it is allowed to pass or not allowed to pass regardless of solenoid activation, again this would be a bad thing.

While it is possible the ecu is not telling the solenoid to fire, this is fairly unlikely... the solenoids are extremely common to fail however.

With regard to your ABS light coming on, you need to make this a secondary concern after the 4WD light issue. The reason for this is when the 4WD issue occurs, it is causing very small clutching of the front axle which will cause ABS anomalies. It is very common for the ABS light to come on as well when you have this 4WD problem. If the ABS light remains after the 4WD light problems are resolved, then we would want to look into that separately, though I do not think that will be the case here.

Check over your vacuum lines looking for any broken/disconnected/rotted hose/caps, and if all looks well there pull the freewheel solenoid pack for testing.... you will likely find it to be the cause as usual.

Just did an oil change on one tonight. I work at Goodyear. It's located close to the front bumper almost right next to the radiator on the left side of the vehicle. You have to take the cover off to get to it and drain the oil. Just take the two 14mm bolts off to access it. Hope this helps.

Disconnect the battery. The Starter is located on the left side, driver's side , top left. There are two screws. Use a 13 mm socket w/6-8" long ext. bar.Remove both screws, top & bottom. Remove the ground cable and the positive power cable with the 13 mm socket and carefully wedge the starter out. Reverse procedure to reinstall new starter.

first of all you have to consider several things. 1. what is the mileage? if you have high miles you will want to change the valve cover gaskets. The reason is you will need to remove the plenum to get to the plugs and you will want to do this right the first time. 2. change your plugs while you are in there. This is very easy to do. It looks intimidating but invest the time and you be surprised how easy it is. I just did the timing belt, guide, tensioner, hydraulic tensioner, water pump, valve cover gaskets, plugs and plug wires and fuel filter and my montero runs like new with 140,000 miles.

The replacing of the water pump assembly of this application is of skilled difficulty. The first steps are the removal of the drive belts. Once they are cleared the coolant hoses can be disconnected. Finally the water pump assembly bolts can be removed from the engine. The gasket material should be cleaned to ensure a correct seal. The new pump can be installed and the belts rerouted to original layout. The vehicle should be the purged and recharged with fresh coolant. Lastly, the engine and heater should be turned on to inspect for function and possible leaks.
