is there a sweet smell? Does the coolant level drop in the overflow tank and/or the radiator? if so, you might be looking at a bad head gasket. if there is slight white smoke(usually condensation) and no loss of coolant, then it is normal. once the engine (and exhaust system) gets hot, there should be no more smoke. if the smoke has a bluish tint it could be valve seals leaking. the best thing to do is take it to a garage just about when they close and leave the car with instructions to check the smoke coming from the exhaust the next morning. just about any tech. i know of can identify whether there is a head gasket leak, valve seal leak, or normal condensation burn off just by seeing it start cold!

If it is restricted enough, the exhaust valves could burn out. Other than restriction, I wouldn't see how. Only if the pipes are pinched shut or almost completely blocked. Theres no backpressure it will stall out constantly or not start at all. (ever paint a potato black and stick it in someones exhaust pipe?) Theoretically, you can run the car with a huge gaping hole or no exhaust at all, it will sound like junk but it will run.

Yes, the car can be loud because of a damaged muffler or a muffler with reduced baffles in the silencer unit. It can also be loud because of a noisy engine.

When any vehicle has black smoke coming from the tail pipe it normally means it is not burning gas properly. and it could be burning oil check your oil if it is black you are burning oil. and you probably have an oil leak Black smoke means that you're getting too much fuel to the cylinders. You may have a bad injector. If you're burning oil, then the smoke would be white (indicating worn rings or valve guides).

From my experience, your vehicle is probbably burning oil in the combustion chamber, some seals might be broken or worn out in your engine block. I recomend taking it to an auto shop to have some gaskes or seals replaced. Hope this helped!

Blue smoke at startup, that clears up within a few minutes is normally cause by worn valve seals. Blue smoke that continues is oil burning. Black smoke is fuel burning from an overly rich fuel mixture. White smoke is normal at startup, especially during the winter, but if it does not dissipate rapidly, it can be a sign of coolant entering the combustion chamber. If it is coolant, it will smell sweet, you will be loosing coolant, and this is a sign of serious trouble. Usually a blown head gasket or cracked/warped head. First is what you call smoke BLUE, BLACK, or like FOG or STEAM ??? Black smoke usually fuel Blue smoke usually oil Steam/Fog usually water or coolant Now , the big question is whats the cause? Flooding fuel injector?, Worn piston rings?, Blown head gaskets?

Black and blue smoke means your engine is burning oil. That is bad. You may have a blown head gasket. That is very bad. You may have worn piston rings. That is also bad. I have no idea why your engine is burning oil but the reason is bad.

Usually these are symptoms of a blown Head Gasket or a critical seal beteen the coolant channels in the engine and the cylinders. What the white smoke means is that water has gotten into a cylinder and is being turned to steam as the piston fires. Whoever did the work probably did not reseal the system correctly and you have water or coolant in the cylinders. If you get enough water into the cylinders the engine cannot start because the cylinders cannot fire properly. I hope this answers your question sufficiently. ----

Don't want to doubt you, but I'd definitely check to make sure it feels lightly oily or even soak some a few drops into a paper towel and see if it ignited (careful of course). Assume it's not running rough / missing occasional firings, right?

them darn confounded contraptions are on every vehicle ive ever done bought. I just end up cuttin them off anyway, so i can have buddy hang out the window listenin to her purr when i rev up the gas peddle when we are out loggin with my 10 inch bar electric chain saw. and after a long days work of cuttin down a few twigs to fill a picnic basket we go in to the mill to cash it in for about 60000

check your oil. if you have to put oil in it allot its your piston rings or valve seals

I paid a total of 580 Canadian dollars. They had to do some complicated cutting and installing when attaching the muffler. The muffler cost just over 300, but tax, labor and an extra part really killed my wallet. A muffler with a hole in it will usually cost you lots in gas and you can fail your emissions test. An awful expense when it comes to older cars.

It could be timing is off. Need more info. Is it Fuel injected or Carburated? Exhaust smoke? Is it black? Black indicates alot of carbon built up. May mean the fuel is burning way to rich.

The question could be improved to read: "Why does steam come out of the exhaust when I first start my vehicle?" Answer: condensation. When you shut-off your engine and the the exhaust pipes cool down, water will condense on the interior surfaces of the pipes from the warm air in the exhaust pipes. This water pools there until the engine starts up again. Then, it starts to evaporate and exits the tailpipe as steam. After all the liquid water evaporates and the exhaust pipes get too hot for water to remain on their surfaces, the visible steam will cease to emerge from the tailpipe. So, no; it is most likely not from a blown head gasket or a crack in the engine. If you are not losing coolant then all is well, drive happy
